overview displays eval. kits
Evaluation kits
Plastic Logic Germany offers evaluation kits for all display platforms ensuring a quick and easy
evaluation of our display technology
Main features (independent of display platform):
• Quick and easy way to evaluate and explore Plastic Logic Germany’s display technology
• Includes processor board (Beaglebone, MSP430 or Freescale - depending on platform); break out board (if
applicable); reference design board with proven 'must-have' electronics; cables; software; and manual
• Pre-loaded SD-Card with software and images provided
• Own images can be used
• Begins displaying images when plugged into a power supply
• Enables customers to easily develop own applications (kit’s PCB, schematics and software are available for reuse)
Evaluation kit for Ultrachip UC8156-based display platform
This evaluation kit includes an MSP430 microcontroller on a Parrot processor board. The MSP430 microcontroller
software is based on C-code. Additional software packages or changes require a separate JTAG programmer. The HBZ9
reference design board with 'must-have' electronics is also provided. This board only contains passives, because the
related displays already include an Ultrachip UC8156 with integrated gate and source drivers, an EPD hardware
controller and power management.
Evaluation kits for Epson S1D13541-based display platform
These evaluation kits include either an MSP430 microcontroller on a Parrot processor board or an ARM Cortex-A8 on a
Beaglebone White standard board. The MSP430 microcontroller software is based on C-code. Additional software
packages or changes require a separate JTAG programmer. A Ruddock break-out board is optionally available for signal
tracing, with programmable buttons and LEDs. The Beaglebone processor board is a mini PC running on Linux which
contains the required frame buffer drivers. Additional scripting is possible. The Ruddock break-out board is necessary
for connecting to the Beaglebone board. Either a HBZ6 or HBZ7 reference design board with 'must-have' electronics
is provided. These boards only contain a power management IC (PMIC) and passives, because the related displays
already include an EPSON S1D13541 with integrated gate and source drivers and an EPD hardware controller.
Evaluation kits for driver-based display platform
These evaluation kits include either an MSP430 microcontroller on a Parrot processor board or a FREESCALE i.MX5
board. The MSP430 microcontroller software is based on C-code. Additional software packages or changes require a
separate JTAG programmer. A Ruddock break-out board is optionally available for signal tracing, with programmable
buttons and LEDs. In combination with the MSP430 microcontroller, a Raven reference design board with 'must-have'
electronics is also provided. This interface board contains an EPSON S1D13524 EPD controller, a power management
IC (PMIC), a DRAM and passives, because the related displays only come with integrated gate and source drivers. The
FREESCALE i.MX5 runs on Linux, which contains the necessary framebuffer drivers. Additional scripting is possible. A
reference design board is not necessray since the FREESCALE i.MX5 board already contains a system-on-chip
processor and EPD controller, power management IC (PMIC), memories and passives.
