Celebrates 25 Years of Inspiring
Children and Families
DISCOVERY Children’s Museum marked
a milestone Wednesday, Sept. 9 as it
celebrates 25 years of serving the children
and families of southern Nevada. The Silver
celebration will continue throughout 2016 with
celebratory events and programming including:
acknowledgement of those supporters who
have built and sustained the organization since
its founding, and ongoing promotion of the
educational impact the Museum has had and
continues to have on the community.
“After 25 years, the museum is securing its
future by ensuring we develop into a critical
generation in the GROSSOLOGY series.
Oozing with disgusting science and interactive learning games, the all-new “Animal
Grossology” exhibit is sure to provide a
unique perspective on the animal
kingdom. DISCOVERY Children’s Museum,
in conjunction with Advanced Exhibits, the
exhibit’s producer, invites you to
experience some of the slimiest, stinkiest
and downright yuckiest creatures on earth.
The exhibit opens on Jan. 30 and runs
through April 17, 2016.
The exhibition contains solid science and introduces it in a way that makes kids giggle.
It’s science disguised in interactive entertainment and kids are more apt to learn
when they’re having fun doing it. You may
think leeches are pretty gross but they’re
used after some surgeries to assist in the
healing process. Did you know that cows
are one of the gassiest animals on earth ?
Learn why the dung beetle is nature’s living
pooper scooper and why scientists are
studying slug and snail slime production for
clues in treating cystic fibrosis.

“Atari-type” world by competing against
each other in a challenging dung ball roll race
• Seeing larger-than-life bloodsuckers and
learning why they need blood and where
they store it in their bodies
• And, learning why a cat’s anatomy is the
reason why cat’s spit up hairballs
The exhibition was created and produced by Advanced Exhibits, a division of Advanced Animations
LLC, in collaboration with Sylvia Branzei, the author
of the GROSSOLOGY series of books. The books are
published through Price Stern Sloan, a member of
Penguin (USA) Inc.

A SWANKY EVENING IN SUPPORT OF THE MUSEUM
The Magic of DISCOVERY Gala is our largest fundraiser of the year providing critical
mission-based funding for our programs, exhibits, and outreach. On October 24, 2015,
DISCOVERY Children’s Museum held The Magic of DISCOVERY Rat Pack Gala at Four
Seasons Las Vegas. Our theme paid homage to the Golden Age of Las Vegas which
began in 1960 when Dean, Frank, Sammy, Peter, and Joey became famously known as
the “Rat Pack.”
DISCOVERY Children’s Museum was honored to present the 16th Annual Great Friend to
Kids Award to the Honorable Carolyn Goodman, Mayor of Las Vegas and Former Mayor
Oscar Goodman. Mayors Goodman have been tremendous supporters of the Museum
and contributed to making the new location and the downtown revitalization a reality.
They have and continue to support critical education and outreach programs that benefit children and families in our community.
We are grateful for our co-chairs Emily Goodman and Shari Wong for their leadership, our Board of Trustees for their unwavering
support, and our generous Rat Pack Gala Committee members, volunteers, and partners who made this magical evening come alive.
The Rat Pack Gala raised nearly $400,000, which is directly invested in the Museum’s mission of igniting a lifelong love of learning in
children, families, and educators and creating positive and measureable impact in our community.

Join us for a true exhibition of diversity and collaboration of community. Nellie is
distraught and on a quest to find her missing green treasure, a special gift that
she and her school mates brought for their favorite teacher. Nellie searches high
and low to find the missing treasure and along the way, she learns a lot about
nature, her neighborhood and community helpers.
e Are My Eyes Playing Tricks? e
Experience some cool optical illusions, learn how the brain and eyes work
together to allow us to “see”. This experience will definitely make you question
whether you saw what you thought you saw.
e Rhythm of Your Heart e
Experience how the heart works exploring the four chambers and their
purposes. Learn some fun facts about your heart and how to keep it healthy.
e DNA Detectives e
DNA detectives are also known as Forensic Scientists, who use DNA not only to
catch the bad guy, but also help find missing people. Learn all about DNA and
how it can be used to solve complicated mysteries. Help us solve one of our
greatest mysteries!
e Discover Chemistry e – Everything Changes
Discover how chemicals behave and more as we explore amazing reactions with
incredible liquids, mysterious powders and fascinating gases!

Visit Toddler Town (TT), Young At Art (YAA), It’s Your Choice (IYC),
Patents Pending (PP) and Solve It! to participate in engaging and
integrated arts activities and experiences. TT feature experiences
developmentally appropriate for our youngest visitors, those 5
years and younger. All other areas feature experiences designed
for a variety of ages, including adults!

Black History Month, or National African American History
Month, is an annual celebration of achievements by black
Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of
African Americans in U.S. history. The event grew out of
“Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian
Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African
Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially
designated the month of February as Black History Month.
Other countries around the world, including Canada and
the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating
black history.
The precursor to Black History Month was created in 1926
in the United States, when historian Carter G. Woodson
and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History
announced the second week of February to be “Negro
History Week.” This week was chosen because it coincided
with the birthday of Abraham Lincoln on February 12 and
of Frederick Douglass on February 14, both of which dates
Black communities had celebrated together since the late
19th century.
By the time of Woodson’s death in 1950, Negro History
Week had become a central part of African American life
and substantial progress had been made in bringing more
Americans to appreciate the celebration. At mid–century,
mayors of cities nationwide issued proclamations noting
Negro History Week.
The celebration was expanded to a month in 1976, the
nation’s bicentennial. President Gerald R. Ford urged
Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often
neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every
area of endeavor throughout our history.” That year, 50
years after the first celebration, the association held the first
African American History Month. By this time, the
entire nation had come to recognize the importance of
Black history in the drama of the American story. Since
then each American president has issued African American
History Month proclamations.

contributions and legacies of various individuals of African
American descent and the past leaders of our country.

significantly influenced children’s literature.

IYC – The Cat in the Hat has run amok, he started to tell
all of the stories and they got stuck! Everyone has so much
fun that the wanted to be a part, to run and balance crawl
and jump to get a healthy heart. So come and play games
inspired by the books, take a leap and have some fun- it’s
easier than it looks.

Harry Potter: Healthy Hogwarts –
Celebrating National Reading Month and
National Nutrition Month!
This annual event has fondly become one of our favorite
collaborations! DISCOVERY Children’s Museum and the
Junior League of Las Vegas (JLLV) are celebrating National
Nutrition Month® again this year on Saturday, March 19,
2016 from 10 am – 3 pm. It will be a special day full of fun
and engaging activities and demonstrations on food and
nutrition. In other words and back by popular demand, the
Junior League of Las Vegas is taking over the museum to
host Kids in the Kitchen.
Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen addresses the growing
issues of childhood obesity and poor nutrition, as well as
raises awareness and provides solutions for these urgent
problem. In this initiative, JLLV provides information and
materials related to healthy eating and nutrition to children
and their parents. This event directly involves children in
demonstrations and lessons on how to select and prepare
healthy, affordable, meals and snacks. Mark your calendar,
it’s sure to be a fun, healthy and interactive day for all!
National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and
information campaign created by the American Dietetic
Association. The campaign is designed to focus attention
on the importance of making informed food choices and
developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

volunteer at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum. We are
looking for adults that want to work in a fun and energetic
environment while giving back to the community and seeing
the immediate impact of your generosity.

minds and early learners, maintenance of exhibits, public

Museum’s 2015 Employee of the Year. She
is an Educator in the Arts & Humanities and
Early Childhood Department and has been
an invaluable resource to the Museum this
year. Tina always goes above and beyond
her job duties and truly loves making
DISCOVERY Children’s Museum a great
place for our visitor’s learning and fun.
