Wiluna Martu Eagles V’s Dalkeith – Nedlands Junior Football Club
Wiluna June 1st to 4th 2012
Introduction
The fourth annual 2012 cultural football weekend between the Wiluna Martu Eagles
and the Dalkeith / Nedlands Junior Football Club Eagles has been held, played and won
for the fourth successive year.
The Wilson – Dawson perpetual cup is the weekends jewel in the crown and named
aptly after Mr Mick Wilson and Mr Peter Dawson the catalysts of this engaging event.
The event has grown exponentially since its inception in 2009 and has developed into
much more than just a football match.
This year’s event titled, “The Wiluna Martu Eagles Fly Home” was conducted in Wiluna
and its surrounding areas over the first ever Western Australia Day long weekend in
June and coincided with National Reconciliation Week. With over 120 players, parents
and supporters making the trip to the desert to participate in the four day carnival, the
organisation needed for this year’s event has been one of a massive collaborative effort.
Travel
BHP Billiton Nickel West very generously supplied the flight from Perth domestic
airport to their mine site Mount Keith, for 51 of the weekend’s participants.
The Alliance airline flight left on time at 4.40pm Friday the 1st of June and was a very
smooth ride to Mt Keith arriving just after 6pm.
Upon arrival, the fantastic bus drivers in Craig Dunk, Miles Tarbotton and Ian Tressida
(GWR) were there to greet everyone along with Mick Wilson who had been stationed in
Wiluna for some time preparing the event.
Once luggage had been collected, a power shortage on site made it a long walk in the
dark led by BHP’s Adam Kolberg to Mt Keith’s mess where a magnificent dinner was
served and enjoyed by all.
After dinner the weekend’s commemorative caps, which had everyone’s name
embroided on them and also the participation years were presented. A big hit (Thanks
to Leo Crohan and Peter Dawson)

An hour bus ride from Mt Keith to Golden West Resources camp site 40 km west of
Wiluna, took the edge off most of the weary travellers. With an introduction to the camp
site, room allocations, showers and some friendly banter around the camp fire it wasn’t
long before all lights were out and heads on pillows.

Saturdays Activities: The Buddy System
A beautiful crisp Wiluna morning greeted everyone. With breakfast down, and everyone
freshened up, the days planned activities began at 9am.
All the participating students assembled around the camp fire to start the day’s proceedings
with a “Buddy Questionnaire”.
Each of the Dalkeith-Nedlands boys where partnered up with a Wiluna boy or girl, with each
given a series of questions to ask each other.
With the questions ranging from the age of each other, to family members, Facebook addresses
and “If a movie was made of your life, which actor would play you in the movie”, it gave
everyone the opportunity to break the ice, bond and really connect with their new found buddy.
Some very intriguing answers were given to a lot of the asked questions, and some very
enlightened faces where staring at each other from both camps.

Central Desert Native Title Services: Cultural Awareness Activities
Hamish Morgan, Vera Anderson and Ben Brown from The Central Desert Native Title Services,
gathered everyone on the lawn to begin what would be a fascinating and extremely enlightening
cultural experience.
Hamish began by laying a rope on the lawn and giving a brief outline of the Martu people’s
history that began 50 thousand years ago.
With world and Australian historical dates being highlighted throughout Hamish’s talk, it really
showed the minimal time that European descendants have been in the Aboriginal and Martu
people’s territory. A fascinating presentation which completely captured everyone attention.

Enlightening
From the sun soaked lawned area, everyone made their way into the recreation room where
Hamish, Vera and Ben went into more detail in regards to Martu language, customs, spirituality,
marriage laws, and skin colours and even went into detail about Ben’s amazing upbringing.
Ben, the youngest son of the Yalula boss has an incredible story and was happy to answer any
and all questions from the inquisitive crowd.

Ngurra: Home, house, bush home, Home environment
Kuta: How u going bro, strong connection

Once the power point presentation concluded, the buses departed for a tour of the culturally
significant landmarks which scattered the surrounding areas.
With Vera and Ben explaining the spiritual significance of the different areas and the stories that
accompanied each spot, everyone was listening intently and willing to explore the historic sites.
Walking in the warm sun, retracing the steps from tens of thousands of years ago of the Martu
people and seeing the fascinating sights, the long walks didn’t bother anybody.
Just before lunch, the men and women were separated and taken to the spiritually gender
specific areas which the opposite sex is disallowed to enter. Fascinating!
Lunch was served, where everyone was treated to a sandwich and some fruit and some
interesting discussion took place at our lunch destination on a rock formation on the boarder of
Yeelirrie Station.
Once lunch was finished, a bus ride back to GWR for a quick rest before the next activity began.

Newmont: Jundee Gold Mine Site Tour and Dinner
The Buses convoyed again and this time through Wiluna town to Newmont’s Jundee Gold mine
site an hour drive from GWR.
On arrival everyone was treated to refreshments followed by a presentation on the operations
of the site by Newmont’s Manager of Operations.
With gold samples being displayed around the room during the talk and some in-depth
questions being asked by the Dalkeith-Nedlands boys fathers at the conclusion of the
presentation another bus ride around the site proved very interesting.
Dave McCutcheon, Jared Burns and Monty Petterson
“Has anyone seen those gold samples I put out?”
After a pit stop at the mechanical, cleaning bays to witness the enormous size of the machinery
and a photo opportunity, a 6km/h bus ride down the to the base of the gold pits to see the
opening of the underground maze of mining tunnels was taken.
With an incredible amount of land moved and massive man-made hills adjacent to the pits it’s
amazing the extent that man will go to, to find gold.

That's one big Caterpillar
Once the pit tour had concluded, the Jundee mess was bombarded by some hungry and excitable
children.
A fantastic meal, with an enormous selection to choose from hit the spot for all the weary
travellers. A big thank you to Aleks Cupacs from Newmont, who took control of the very popular
ice cream bar. With 35 children lining up for 2 and 3 helpings a piece, it ended up causing Aleks
to visit the medic station the next day with frostbite and RSI.
The long ride back to GWR was an amusing one on the Green Bus particularly. Camera man
Dennis Forkin, unfortunately, was the only adult in the back of the bus, and with the boys now
pretty familiar with each other there was some very load singing for most of the trip and some
very load flatulence to go along with the boy’s tunes.
Well played Dennis!!

Game Day
Game Day was finally upon us. The anticipation was beginning to rise and both teams and their
personnel splintered off after breakfast to discuss tactics, team positioning and final
arrangements were made to team uniforms.
With last year’s result decided by a kick on the final siren and The Dalkeith-Nedlands taking
home the converted Wilson-Dawson trophy, there was a real sense of retribution in the Martu
boys’ eyes early in the day.
The Holy Grail, “The Wilson-Dawson Perpetual Cup”
The travelling group assembled at the front of GWR’s camp at 9 am in anticipation for the big
game only an hour and a half away.
With the support of Meleoni Nariro the acting Wiluna Sport and Rec manager, the Wiluna oval
transformed into the MCG of the desert and a great caldron for a great battle.
The players and supporters arrived at the oval and promptly gathered into their team huddles.

Stacey Petterson and Leo Crohan, the respective coaches, gathered their troops and the umpires
led by Carrick Robertson and Kelman Patch did their last minute stretches, meanwhile John
Nicol practiced his boundary throw-ins feverishly and David Sanders warmed up his flags in the
goal square with some stylish flapping.
Carrick brought both teams together in the centre of the ground and gave his umpiring brief,
explaining that no soccering was allowed and the bigger boys look after their smaller mates.
After a roar from the capacity crowd, the players positioned themselves, the ball was raised high
and the siren sounded. “Game on”
“Keep it clean boys and girls, no soccering and look after the little guys”

The crowd swelled to capacity just prior to bounce down
The Wiluna Martu Eagles began the game with the breeze firmly at their backs and kicking to
the School end of the oval.
With the early part of the game played at a frantic pace the Wiluna boys had the majority of the
play and ended the first quarter with a three goal advantage.
The second quarter began with the breeze turning a full 180 degree and assisting the Martu
boys again. To the Dalkeith – Nedlands boy’s credit they controlled the ball well and went goal
for goal until half time.
The half time break allowed all the players a welcome break and with the novelty Long bomb
and 100 metre sprint to be conducted, it made for some exciting entertainment for the
captivated crowd.

The sprint was the first of the events conducted and with five of the quickest runners from each
team participating it was a shame the Australian Olympic selectors weren’t present.
When the gun started the field, a fantastic race took place with judges Jimmy Lee (GWR) and
Grant Dorrington (WAFC) awarding the winners prize to Leithan Williams who just bloused out
the fast finishing Braden Gilbert.
“Bring it in Boys”
The Long bomb competition was just as exciting with five from each team having one kick for
bragging rights.
Graham Lane held the lead with a well struck torpedo for the majority of the event until big
George Burns pumped out a magnificent 65 metre drop punt to take the title.
Well done boys.
The second half began with some spirited enthusiasm and with some tactical changes being
made from Leo and Stacey some quality football was witnessed.
The Wiluna Martu Eagles started to show the ascendancy in the third term and their muscles
started to flex. No matter what moves the Dalkeith-Nedlands brains trust made the Wiluna boys
and girls pulled away on the scoreboard.
With the Wiluna Martu Eagles having a commanding lead going into the final quarter the
Dalkeith-Nedlands Eagles still had one trump card to play.

When are we on Coach?
With the players rehydrated and the bucket of halved oranges consumed, the final quarter was
underway.
With the breeze firmly in the backs of the Wiluna team again, the scoreboard began to tick over
very quickly and professional goal umpire David Sanders needed a quick rub of deep heat on his
shoulders to keep his flags waving.
Boundary umpire, John Nicol who maintained the grandstand side boundary magnificently all
day, showed some real toe in the final quarter and was hard to fault, until central umpire
Carrick Robertson pulled him up for a lack of elevation with his tossing. Hard but fair Carrick.
Well done JN.
The latter stage of the final quarter was of the highest quality football and with the result done
and dusted, the Dalkeith – Nedlands trump card was played.
Leo ran straight through the interchange gates and proceeded to chase the ball like a JackRussell Terrier chasing a seagull at the beach. Yelling, screaming and demanding the ball, the big
fella got tossed around like a rag doll and broke a nail the only time he touched the pig skin.
Extremely entertaining
