First off, I am always greeted at the door
by our exceptional group of Ambassadors.
I joined the Chamber seven years ago
because of how welcoming they made
me feel at my very first event. Most
people are a bit tentative when attending
a new event and that feeling went away
as soon as I walked through the door.
Along my journey with the Chamber the
Ambassadors have helped welcome and
connect me to the people I wanted to

The group that I’ve had the pleasure of
spending the most time with over the
past few years is the Board of Directors.
They are a diverse group of leaders that
drive the Chamber. On a monthly basis
we evaluate the Chamber’s operations
and programming. More often than
not we are discussing the successes of
the organization - it’s rare to have a real
problem which means we are doing a
great job of steering the organization in
the right direction. Not to say that we
can’t continue to improve each year.
It truly is the people that make this
organization great! So make a point to
set aside some time and attend one of
our meetings or events. I can guarantee
that you will leave either having learned
something valuable or meeting someone
new, maybe even both! And even if
you can’t attend, the Chamber is always
working on your behalf.
All of this adds up to a special
organization that I have committed to
spending my time with, as a general
member and through my time on the
board. My investment has been repaid
tenfold. I encourage you to commit too.
You will gain knowledge, friendship and
enjoy laughs along the way – making you
and your business stronger.

Meet: Kim & Jake Bauer
Bauer Jewelry Designs
Where did you grow up and how did it
impact you?
Kim: I grew up all over the world as the
daughter of an Air Force Colonel. It helped
me understand different perspectives,
personality styles and cultures and adapt
to them. My mother wanted me to be
a famous movie star. In college I was
going to be an art professor but we were
working our way through college and
expecting a son so I shifted to a BS degree.
Jake: I’m a Wisconsin native, now living in
Middleton for 5 years with my wife and
children.
And your first job was?
K: My first job out of college was in
diamond sales – I’ve always had a passion
for diamonds and design. I’d walk the
beach as a little girl and pick up stones and
bring them home.
J: My first job was at Woodman’s, but I
started in jewelry when I was 17 years
old with Goodman’s Jewelers (K: Through
the Oregon school system, we were able
to start the first jewelry apprenticeship
program in WI). I won an award at age 18
and realized that I had talent and passion
for custom jewelry design.
What were some of your career steps?
J: Goodman’s, trade school, 2 other local
jewelers, more ongoing jewelry education
across the country.
K: Leadership positions with CUNA &
Affiliates, M&I Data and American Girl,
although I always knew that I wanted to
own my own business.
How did Bauer Jewelry Design happen?
K: We were running on different paths, I
was corporate and Jake was at another
jeweler, but in 2007 I asked Jake to
be my business partner, starting the
journey together. Over the next 4 years,
we developed the business plan and
financials, I went to GIA School for
credentials and we did the build out of our
space. We opened here in November of
2011.
J: If we had rushed into business together,
we would’ve had a totally different
outcome. The economy was horrible,
people were apprehensive during this
timeframe.
Why jewelry?
K: Jake always had a fascination with
jewelry and design; he appreciates art –
we share that. Jake encouraged me to
go back to my art love, creating jewelry
designs and learning scrimshaw. I love
being creative, using both sides of my
brain. I also enjoy working with customers
and building lasting relationships.
How do you differentiate your business?
J: Everything is done on site here in
Middleton – we’re a custom jeweler and
typically turn projects in 30 days from start
to finish.
K: We work one-on-one with clients, really
spending time to learn about them, their
interests and incorporating them into
the design. We’re sharing an important
moment in time with our customers –
happy occasions and sad occasions, such
as jewelry made in memory of a loved
one – but we’re taking that moment and
making it last so that it can be passed
along to future generations. We’re
handcrafting jewelry that generations can
enjoy and we’re very proud of that.
What are some of your challenges?
K: As a brand new start-up, getting the
word out of who we are and how well
we do it. Once clients come in the door,
they may shop around but they come
back. They see the quality and value they
receive from us. We’re still educating the
public about misconceptions of custom
jewelry being expensive.
J: Word of mouth is very important to us.
Any significant changes you’ve seen in
the industry?
K & J: Custom design is hot across all ages,
but we’re seeing more young professionals
demanding jewelry that’s unique to them
and custom does that. Custom isn’t about
assembling parts and that’s part of our
education process.
What are you most proud of?
J: Opening.
K: Staying open! Being part of customer’s
stories
What do you do to unwind?
J: I’m an avid cyclist, 3,500 miles to date
this year. We sponsor the Henry Vilas Zoo
Cycling Club and I race for the Great Dane
Velo Club. Plus I have 2 little ones at home
that are my first priority.
K: I exercise quite a bit; I love nature and
love to hike, taking road trips with family.
Where do you want to be down the road?
J: Your neighborhood jeweler!
K: To be successful enough to be known
and give more back to the community.
Closing thoughts?
K: This is my perfect job, the job I’ve been
most happy in because of the freedom,
the relationship with my son, and also a
goal of being able to hand down to my
grandchildren something that hopefully
they can continue to participate in and
grow.

Two Men and a Truck Owner Featured as
Panelist for IFA. Tim Lightner, owner of Two
Men and a Truck in Madison, volunteers his
time to the International Franchise Association

Lightner was asked to be a panelist at a
meeting of franchisors in Minneapolis which
focused on sharing best practices and current
trends in the industry. He was one of the first
franchisees invited to be part of this event
which traditionally includes just franchisors.

started in 1993 and has given back nearly $1
million in donations and services to charitable
organizations in the community.
Ballweg Bike Program to Benefit Madison’s
Ronald McDonald House. Ballweg Chevrolet
has purchased a fleet of bicycles that will not
only entertain customers waiting for their
vehicles to be serviced, but benefit guests
of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of
Madison. The dealership recently purchased
a fleet of brand-new bicycles, helmets and
locks from Middleton Cycle. The bikes and
equipment are available at no charge to
customers for use while their vehicle is being
serviced. Those who use the bikes at Ballweg,
will also receive a gift to sweeten the deal–a
token for a free scoop of custard at the
Middleton Culver’s. But the best part of the
Borrow a Bike program happens when the
year ends: Ballweg will donate the bikes and
equipment to the Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Madison, which offers a “home
away from home” for families of children
undergoing treatment at local medical centers.
ALTUS Announces Sales. ALTUS Commercial
Real Estate, Inc. is pleased to announce that
Jeff Jansen has completed the sale of 6225
University Ave, a 42,645 SF parcel with an
18,000 SF office building. Jansen represented

Gruno’s Diamonds Selected as Exclusive Rolex
Jeweler in Madison. Gruno’s Diamonds, a
family-owned premium jeweler since 1953, is
opening the doors to their new store located
at 7311 West Towne Way in early October.
The Madison facility is the second location for
the jeweler and will serve Gruno’s northern
market region including Madison, Fitchburg,
Middleton, Shorewood Hills, Waunakee, Maple
Bluff, and Monona. Susan McClain, Store
Manager, is a native of Madison and recently
returned to the area from Minnesota. McClain
has over 30 years in the jewelry industry.
Pellitteri Waste Systems to Increase Recycling
Schedule for City of Middleton. City of
Middleton residents will start receiving weekly
recycling collection service effective October
1st, 2014. Pellitteri Waste Systems and the
Middleton Common Council recently agreed
to terms of an amendment to the City’s solid
waste collection contract by which Pellitteri
will begin collecting recyclable materials on
a weekly basis instead of every other week.

SVA Announces Winners of 40 Days of Giving
Contest. In celebration of their 40 years in
business, SVA hosted a “40 Days of Giving”
contest in which nonprofit organizations had

PF Chang’s and the National Breast Cancer
Foundation to Paint Horses Pink. This
October, more than 250 iconic P.F. Chang’s
Warrior Horses will turn a shade of pink in
honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness
Month. P.F. Chang’s has teamed up with the
National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF)
to raise up to $100,000 in the fight against
the disease. Throughout the month, anyone
who posts a selfie with the pink horse(s) on
Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with the
#PaintPFChangsPink campaign hashtag or
orders a sushi roll at P.F. Chang’s will generate a
$1 donation toward the cause.
Hausmann Johnson Hosts Kaden’s Wish
Tailgate. On September 27, HausmannJohnson Insurance hosted a Tailgate party
that raised over $31,000 for Make-A-Wish
Wisconsin. More than 250 people attended
the event, which featured Kaden granting
5 Wishes to children with life threatening
illnesses! Kaden is the inspiration for Kaden’s
Wish Tailgate. He is nine years old and has a
rare form of a mitochondrial disease called
Leigh syndrome. In 2011 he and his family
were granted his wish by Make-A-Wish®
Wisconsin to Disney World. Upon his return,
Kaden decided that he had one more wish,
he wanted to raise money for Make-A-Wish
Wisconsin® to grant wishes to even more
children! The event featured performances by
the UW Alumni Band, photo opportunities with
Bucky Badger, a 50/50 cash raffle, and all-youcan-eat-and-drink brats and beverages.
