COMMISSIONERS COURT RESOLUTION IN RECOGNITION OF
MR. JOSE NOE MENDEZ ON HIS CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS COUNTRY AND
COMMUNITY ON HIS 90th BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS, Jose Noe Mendez, was born on April 27, 1925 in Tampico, Mexico where his father, a Mexican American, was
working in the refineries in Mexico at the time and at the age of 40 days old, his family moved back to the United States and lived in
the town of Benavides until the age of 17 years; and,
WHEREAS, Mendez enlisted in the U.S. Army on May 19, 1944 and served with the 1st Infantry Division – the “Big Red One”; and
fought and survived in the Ardennes known as the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Hurtgen Forest, and in the Rhineland – known as the
Central Europe Campaign; and,
WHEREAS, Jose Noe Mendez, was captured by the Germans for 8 hours and then re-captured by a United States Tank Battalion; he was
injured on January 1945 and after two months returned to Germany to serve light duty as a guard at the Nuremburg Trials and was later
assigned to operate a trucking company as an NCO in Frankfort, Germany, and was honorably discharged at Fort Sam Houston on April
27, 1946; and,
WHEREAS, Mendez received the Combat Infantry Badge, a Purple Heart, three Bronze Service Stars , the Victory Ribbon, the
Occupation Medal - Germany, the Good Conduct Medal, and achieved the grade of Technician 4th Grade Non-commissioned Officer;
and,
WHEREAS, after his discharge from the U.S. Army, Mendez came back to Benavides for a while, then moved to Alice and lived there
for a year. In 1951 he moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he married his wife, Olivia Gomez Mendez, on June 29, 1951 where his
two sons, Mike and Jesse Mendez were born; and further Mendez was always a Community Activist who fought against discrimination
and segregation; and,
WHEREAS, he served on the following boards: 14 years on the Boys and Girls Club Board, 12 years for the United Way-Allocations
Committee, four years on the City of Corpus Christi Planning and Zoning Commission, was one of the founders of the Committee on
Nueces National Bank, was one of the founders of the Westside Business Association-Memorial Statue Committee Chairman, on the
Highway 44 Highway Committee, three years in the Bilingual Theater Company, was a Saga Member-established by Dr. Cleo Garcia,
served in the West Side Pony League Board, and the City Transit Advisory Committee before RTA was established; and,
WHEREAS, Mr. Jose Noe Mendez, on April 27, 2015 will be celebrating with his family, his 90 th Birthday.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE NUECES COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT, hereby recognizes Jose
Noe Mendez on achieving an abundant successful life and joins so many others as he celebrates his 90th birthday; and the Court further
urges the citizens of Nueces County to join the Court in congratulating Mendez on a fruitful life with many years to come.
