**Our charity drive this year will benefit both The Interval House (serving Hartford and the surrounding area) and
The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services (serving New Haven and the surrounding area). The Interval
House, a nonprofit organization, has been helping victims of domestic violence for more than 37 years. The agency
operates a 24-hour crisis hotline, 20-bed emergency shelter and provides counseling for victims and advocates in
both the criminal and civil court system. The Umbrella Center provides a temporary confidential refuge for women
and children affected by domestic violence. Shelter services include individual and group counseling, advocacy,
law enforcement-based victim assistance, children’s counseling programs, safety education and planning,
emergency legal advocacy, and other support services as needed.

PARALEGAL DAY SPEAKERS
GEORGE JEPSEN took office as Connecticut’s 24th Attorney General in January 2011. As
Attorney General, Jepsen – a former legislator, state Senate majority leader, Democratic state
party chairman, and private practitioner – serves as Connecticut’s chief legal officer and
counsel to all state agencies. He is responsible for all civil law enforcement, representing the
people of Connecticut and the broader public interest. In his many years of public service,
Jepsen is best known for his advocacy on behalf of consumers, civil rights, the environment, and a fair
and competitive business climate. As Attorney General, he has been active on national issues, working
with the Department of Justice and other state attorneys general on such matters as data privacy, the
$25 billion national mortgage foreclosure settlement, and holding the financial community accountable
for the 2008 financial crisis. Jepsen graduated from Dartmouth College, summa cum laude, Phi Beta
Kappa. He later earned his J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School, where he worked as a teaching
fellow in Constitutional law, and simultaneously earned a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the
John F. Kennedy School of Government. Jepsen currently serves as co-chair of the National
Association of Attorneys General Standing Committee on Antitrust and was recently elected as NAAG’s
Eastern Region chairman.
CHRISTINE E. JELTEMA began her career with the Connecticut State Police in 2004 and currently
holds the rank of Trooper First Class. TFC Jeltema is assigned to the Connecticut State Police Training
Academy, responsible for basic recruit training, in-service training, and has been involved in the
development and implementation of scenario based training at the academy. She is a Domestic
Violence Liaison with Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence and a S.T.O.P.S. (State Trooper
Offering Peer Support) volunteer. TFC Jeltema currently holds NESPEC instructor certification in
Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC). She also has instructed in Bias Crimes, Gangs,
Suicide Awareness, Legal Updates and Workplace Violence. In addition to her teaching assignments,
TFC Jeltema is also the State Police Youth Week Coordinator and Recruit Experiential Training
Coordinator.
In addition to her State Police service, Christine Jeltema also has served in the Connecticut Army
National Guard since 1997, holding the rank of Captain. She is assigned to the 118th Multi-functional
Medical Battalion as the Patient Administrator. She also serves as the special duty officer, which
includes, Equal Opportunity Officer, Sexual Harassment/Assault Officer and Safety Officer. She also
serves on the Sexual Harassment/Assault board for the Army and Air National guard. She has
deployed in Bosnia in 2000 as a healthcare specialist and Iraq in 2006 as the Battalion Intelligence
Senior Non-Commissioner Officer.
JENNIFER LOPEZ, Advocacy Programs Director for Interval House, a domestic violence program in
Hartford. Interval House is Connecticut’s largest non-profit domestic violence intervention and
prevention organization, providing comprehensive services from community education to crisis
intervention. As the Advocacy Program Director, Jennifer is responsible for the overall supervision of
Interval House’s systemic programs, i.e. Family Violence Victim Advocate Program (both in Hartford,
Manchester Criminal and Family Courts), The Lethality Assessment Program, Intensive Family
Violence Services (DCF Program), Domestic Violence Outreach Program (a program in the Manchester
Police Department) and all Interval House Support Groups. Jennifer provides technical support and
assistance to attorneys as well as health care providers in the community. She regularly conducts
trainings, workshops, and does public speaking throughout the state. She is certified as a Battered
Women Counselor under C.G.S. § 52-146K and is qualified as an Expert Witness in the field of
domestic violence in the State of Connecticut. Jennifer’s breadth of experience encompasses
immigration, custody, criminal and family court process, cultural competency, domestic violence effects
on the children and police response to domestic violence.
ROSEANN MOORE, The Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence Services. Roseann Moore is both a
community educator and an advocate for the Umbrella Center for Domestic Violence. She runs a
traditional support group and an art therapy support group for women survivors of domestic violence.
Ms. Moore has an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Housatonic Community College and
studied at John Jay Criminal Justice College in Manhattan. She is retired from the State of Connecticut
Judicial Department where she was employed for over 25 years as a Coordinator of Interns and
Volunteers. During that employment she offered training for Judicial employees covering such topics as
Victims of Crime, Mothers against Drunk Driving, Forensics of Elder Abuse and Breaking the Cycle of
Domestic Violence where she utilized guest speakers such as Dr. Henry Lee and Dr. Gus Karazulas.
She also trained interns on the Criminal Justice System, Probation, and court proceedings. She
presented at the First Women and Aids Conference in New York City. Ms. Moore currently trains
volunteers at the Milford Rape Crisis center on temporary restraining orders and protective orders and
on the effects of domestic violence. She held a Post Certificate to train police officers and currently
holds a certificate for Train the Trainer: Lethality Assessment Program at the Umbrella Center and is
currently trained for QPR Suicide Prevention. Ms. Moore created an annual Victim’s Mass for all victims
of crime and received a General Assembly Official Citation from the Connecticut House of
Representatives for her efforts. She created and ran the Lifeline Connection, a weekly domestic
violence support group for women and children held at the Stratford Train Station for over 8 years. Ms.
Moore speaks at local colleges on the topic of domestic violence, has worked with the Survivors of
Homicide and Mothers Against Drunk Drivers, and uses her 40 years of experience working with
victims of domestic violence to instruct physicians at Griffin Hospital.
KAREN STANFORD – Connecticut Calendar Girlz - Karen (Tobias) Stanford is the founder and
creative director/ photographer of “Connecticut Calendar Girlz,” a charitable initiative she launched
four years ago to raise money for the Interval House – the state’s largest domestic violence
organization. Ms. Stanford created the calendar based on her belief that one person can make a
difference. She has dedicated her time, talent and resources to be an inspiration and force for
change. Putting her passion for photography and community involvement to use, she works to help
the survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence and other causes close to her heart. She
has collaborated with and donated time to many other organizations such as the American Cancer
Association, MS Society, Children Hospital, and Special Olympics to name a few. Ms. Stanford
sees volunteering as a way to help those less fortunate than herself and to admire people without
prejudice. She lives her life by paying it forward. In “real life” Ms. Stanford has been a special
education teacher in the Connecticut school system for the past 34 years.
