Improving Effluent Water Quality
For a beverage plant facing pH issues in water, MWH designed and installed a batch two-stage pH
adjustment system for peak hydraulic loads of up to 100,000 gpd, capable of equalizing both high
pH flows from sanitizing and low pH flows from filler lines, syrup rooms and can- and bottle-crushing.
Assessing the Energy Life Cycle
Comparing conventional systems to alternative technologies, MWH performed a Life Cycle Assessment
of the refrigeration systems used to cool trucks transporting goods. The analysis included investment
and operational costs, environmental impact and efficiencies and enabled the client to make an informed
Reducing Energy Use
For several years, MWH was responsible for the annual energy monitoring activities and providing advice
on energy reduction research projects for companies in the meat processing industry in the Netherlands,
as part of their energy efficiency agreement. As a result, the companies together managed to achieve a
decrease in CO2-emissions of 28 kt per year.
Achieving Sustainable Compliance
A global manufacturing company with more than 50 sites partnered with MWH to achieve sustained
environmental, health and safety compliance. MWH worked side by side with the corporate and facility staff to
identify issues and develop corrective measures that considered process, procedures, and resource changes.
Changing Waste into Energy
To help a brewery client find a sustainable solution for disposing spent grain, MWH designed an approach
that mechanically dried the grains and then used them as fuel in a special biomass furnace. This system
produced nearly 60% of the primary energy needs of the brewery, saving the equivalent of 25 GWh per year.
