The Gr. 8 Graduation will be Tuesday, June

home to the Gr. 8 students at a later date.
INDOOR SHOES
Just a reminder that all students are required to have a pair of
shoes that is to be worn indoors only. We have numerous
students not wearing shoes in and around the school.
Everyone must have shoes on for safety reasons. Wearing
indoor shoes also helps to reduce the amount of sand and dirt
that is brought into the classrooms from the school yard.
Parents/Guardians are encouraged to review this school policy
with their child. Thank you for your co-operation and support
with this requirement.
KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION:
Welcome to a Wonderful Journey of
Learning!
Is your child starting school in 2015? We
invite you to register your child for
Kindergarten which begins next fall. New
Lowell Central P.S. is a Full Day Early
Learning Kindergarten school (JK/SK students will attend
every day). To be eligible, your child must be four years of
age by December 31, 2015. Upon registration, you will
receive our “Welcome to Kindergarten” package.
Please call 705-424-0991 for further information.
For Kindergarten registration, we will require proof of your
child’s birth date (original Canadian birth certificate,
Certificate of Canadian Citizenship, Canadian Passport,
Permanent Resident Card/Record of Landing, or Statement of
Live Birth - long version) and proof of your child's address.
We will also request his/her record of immunization.
Families of Kindergarten students new to Canada or Ontario
are invited to contact our "Newcomer Welcome Centre" at
705-725-8360, ext. 310.
We look forward to welcoming your child to a wonderful
journey of learning!
HEY NEW LOWELL! ARE YOU READY TO RUN FOR
FUN?
Did you know that physical activity is just as important as
nutritious food, for healthy body and mind? Students who
participate in physical activity at the start of the day are better
prepared to think and learn all through the school day. And,
it’s fun to be active, too!
It’s easy to be active at New Lowell. Run for Fun is coming!
Run for Fun is a 6 week program that will begin running at the
end of April, and run three times a week (Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays). We will meet at 8:10, and finish up
with a stretch around 8:40. Participants will be encouraged to
set a personal goal to complete 42 kilometers – the equivalent
of a marathon! – by the end of the 6 weeks. We will also have
‘detours’ of fun, physical activities to complete along the way.
What a great way to start the day!
All students from grade 1 to 8 are encouraged to participate,
and to bring family members along. Mom, Dad, Grandma,
Grandpa, this is a great opportunity to get fit and have fun, as
a family. Kindergarten students are also welcome to join with
a family member, too. Please watch for more information to
come home soon!
WE NEED YOU!
Parent volunteers are needed to help make our Run for Fun a
success! We need adults to help count laps, track distances,
and just run with the kids. Please contact Ms. Czerny, at the
school, or at [email protected], if you are
interested in helping.
LOST AND FOUND
Our lost and found bucket is overflowing. Please tell your
children to check for missing hats, mitts, ski pants, and shoes.
We will only keep these items for a few weeks before taking
them to a charity.

APRIL 30 EVENT FOR PARENTS HIGHLIGHTS
SOCIAL MEDIA SAFETY, CYBERBULLYING AND
DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
On Thursday, April 30, all Simcoe County District School
Board parents and students are invited to attend an evening
event with Chris Vollum. Chris, a well-known speaker on the
topic of social media, will speak about the potential of online
communication among youth and how to use it for positive
and meaningful connections. His talk will help parents
develop the skills to communicate with their children and
minimize the risk of bullying, cyber-bullying and loss of
reputation. He will highlight opportunities and platforms with
which students may build a positive social presence and
reputation.
The event will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Nantyr Shores
Secondary School, 1146 Anna Maria Ave. in Innisfil. If
parents and students are not able to attend in person, the
presentation will also be livestreamed via the following link:
https://plus.google.com/events/cs0u4bms6ofivnft85phtt7o88c.
This event is brought to you by a Ministry of Education’s

CHILD CARE OPTIONS IN ONTARIO
The Ontario government recently launched an advertising
campaign to raise public awareness about child care options in
this province. The campaign’s objective is to support and
empower parents, so they can choose child care that suits their
family’s needs. It provides information about different types
of care, and indicators of quality in child care settings.
For more information and resources about child care options
in our province, visit www.ontario.ca/childcare. For more
information about child care in our schools, including beforeand after-school care options, visit SCDSB’s public website at
www.scdsb.on.ca and then click on ‘Schools’ – ‘Before and
After School Care.’
PACK A RAINBOW IN YOUR KID’S LUNCH!
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit would like to
remind parents about the importance of a school lunch full of
colourful veggies and fruit. Try some of these tasty kidfriendly ideas to ensure they will eat what you pack:
 Add grated carrot to egg or tuna salad

Pack veggies or fruit in small bite size pieces for easy
eating

Prepare veggies and fruit with different tools that
change the shape and add interest to your child’s
lunch. Use melon ballers, vegetable crinkle cutters,
cookie cutters or even an egg slicer to make some
great shapes

Use a shake of cinnamon on cut fruit if it tends to
turn brown - they will enjoy the new flavour to their
favourite apple or banana pieces

If your kid is a dipper, add a small container of
yogurt or pudding for fruit dipping or cottage cheese
or hummus for veggie dipping
For more information you can call Health Connection at 705721-7520 or 1-877-721-5720 and speak with a public health
nurse or visit the health unit website at
www.simcoemuskokahealth.org.

2-1-1 Connects People to the Information They Need
Connecting with the right program at the right time can be a
frustrating process. Many programs and services exist to help
people. The problem is to know where to call and who to
speak to.
GET CONNECTED. GET
ANSWERS
DIAL
If you are a parent or guardian searching for a tutor, after
school care, extra curricular activities or community clubs, for
a child, or yourself to get involved in, help is really as close as
your phone.
Information on youth counseling services, retraining programs
for adults, assistance for housing and basic needs, and much
more, is also available by dialing 211
211 is your first call for information about community, social,
health and government services.
Your 211 call will be answered by a trained information
specialist 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. 211 can be accessed
by your land line phone or your cell. In Simcoe and Muskoka
you can also visit www.211SimcoeCounty.ca or
www.211Muskoka.ca
GET READY TO GENERATE SOME EXCITEMENT!
The Simcoe County District School Board has partnered with
AMP Solar Group and Potentia Solar to install solar panels on
the rooftops of 41 schools across the County, including New
Lowell Central P.S., generating over 4 mW. The 41 schools
were successful applications approved by the Ontario Power
Authority as part of the Feed in Tariff (FIT) program,
producing renewable energy to feed the provincial energy
grid. As part of this partnership, students will be able to
monitor the energy produced at their school and compare it to
other schools in the County as well as other schools in
Ontario. Students will have access to real data that can be
used in the classroom. Students will also have opportunities to
engage in solar and renewable energy workshops and
presentations at their school.
The preparation for construction will commence March 11 and
will be fully operational by the end of July. Revenue
generated through this program will be used to enhance
environmental learning opportunities for staff and students and
expand on energy conservation efforts in our building.
For more information, please contact the SCDSB
Environmental Systems Coordinator, Jessica Kukac at 705734-6363 extension 11514
YOUR CHILD’S IMMUNIZATION RECORD
The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is required by law
to keep complete immunization records on every school aged
child in Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka.
Unfortunately the health unit does not receive immunization
information directly from doctor’s offices; it is the parent’s
responsibility to give all immunization information to the
health unit. If your child’s immunization record is not
complete, you may receive a notice from the health unit
requesting dates for immunization or proof of a valid
exemption. You will also be advised that your child may be
suspended from school if the health unit does not receive this
information. Please check to make sure that your child’s
immunization information is up-to-date and that the health
unit has record of it. If you have any questions or concerns,
please call Your Health Connection at (705) 721-7520 or 1877-721-7520. Parents can now report their child’s
immunizations to the health unit online at
www.simcoemuskokahealth.org/immsonline
GRADE 7 AND GRADE 8
IMMUNIZATIONS
Nurses from the Simcoe Muskoka District health
Unit will be in school this month providing
immunization to grade 7 students and grade 8
girls who provided consent. Consent forms and fact sheets for
the hepatitis B and meningococcal conjugate ACWY vaccines
for grade 7’s and Human Papillomavirus vaccine for grade 8
girls were sent home in September. It is important that
students complete their series of these vaccines to provide the
best protection. If your child has missed a school clinic,
please call the health unit to book an appointment at one of
our public clinics. The consent forms and fact sheets are
available on the immunization page of the health unit’s
website at www.simcoemuskokahelath.org. If you have any
questions or concerns, please call Your Health Connection at
(705) 721-7520 or 1-877-721-7520

home school or transfer to another school when the capacity of
the school they are attending has been reached and space is

Even with this permission, however, the responsibility for
transportation to and from school is borne by the out-ofattendance-area student and/or parent/guardian
A REMINDER TO PARENTS
