INTRODUCTION

From the 21 to the 28 of March the African Film Festival of
Córdoba – FCAT will celebrate its twelfth edition, which is the
fourth one being held in the Cordovan capital after it was
moved from Tarifa.
After a non-competitive edition, the FCAT- Córdoba has
decided to move the festival to the spring in order to better
adjust to the Cordovan cultural agenda, while remaining
faithful to its principles: to offer the European film
professionals and, mostly, the audience, a direct and
exceptional access to African cinema.
and the “African village”, activities through which the FCAT
expects to reach a larger sector of the population.
The FCAT Córdoba further supports the African
cinematography, not only by projecting the films, selected
through strict quality criteria, but also by offering a
contextualization and review that shall help the Spanish
audience to better understand them.
The programme will be distributed in seven sections, two into
competition and five out of competition:
COMPETITIVE SECTIONS
One more year, the audience appears as one of the most
important components of the FCAT Córdoba. A self-made
audience, more critical and committed to culture and others
in this era of economic and ethics crisis, that demands and
deserves quality cultural activities throughout the whole year.
Thus, the festival, set up by the non-profit organization Al
Tarab, will present 60 films to which will be added the third
edition of the training forum about “Africa’s Cinemas and
cinematographic journalism for dialogue”, exhibitions,
educational meetings and programmes, the Learning Space
-“Long-sightedness”: 16 fictional films and documentaries.
-“Shortly”: 11 short films, fictional and documentaries.

-“Afroscope”: 12 films to form an in-depth analysis on
contemporary Africa through internal and external looks.
-“Tales from the Past: South Africa and Angola”: 7 films
reviewing South African history and society, as well as

-“Tribute to Emil Abossolo-Mbo”: a review of the six best
works of this great Cameroonian actor.
-“African Diaspora”: 4 Latin American films on the Afro

PARALLEL ACTIVITIES
This series seek to revisit the particular style of the Malian
photographer, characterized by the contrast between fabrics
and patterns, leading to overloaded images in which the
human face is in the spotlight.

THE FCAT 2015 POSTER

The poster for the 12 edition of the African Film Festival of
Cordoba-FCAT is based on the work of the photographer
Manolo Yllera that belongs to a tribute series to the Malian
photographer Seydou Keïta (1921-2001) taken for AD
magazine, in which Yllera is the head photographer.
Yllera was interested in the emotional dimension of Keïta’s
portraits: in all of his images the characters are dignified,
important and attractive.
The success of this series led to Manolo Yllera’s participation
in a French-produced documentary about Seydou Keïta.

THE ROOTS OF
CORDOBA- FCAT
The image of Africa portrayed to the Western world is often
biased and manipulated. It highlights misery and hides the
continent’s positive things, without taking into account the
responsibilities or those responsible. Cinema appears as en
efficient tool to change this reductionist vision.
However, cinema in Africa faces many challenges such as, for
example, a significant decrease in the film production, the
increasing difficulty of audiovisual works circulation, the
absence of African cinema in the screens worldwide, the
dramatic reduction of cinemas in the continent, the lack of a
national or regional market for African productions, the lack
of local policies to support the sector and the financial
external dependence (90%) of the production.
Against this backdrop, the first three years Al Tarab focused
its activities around the Tarifa African Cinema Showcase
(MCAT) reaching the Spanish and Moroccan shores of the
Strait of Gibraltar. In 2005, the showcase offered a select
programme of African cinema and hosted the nucleus of what
would later become the Coproduction Forum África Produce,
which sought to offer a space for meeting and reflection to
African and Spanish audiovisual professionals and was
unfortunately cancelled in 2014 due to budgetary shortages.
In 2006, with the implementation of the Africa Plan, Al
Tarab’s commitment found its political reference framework.
In 2007, the Tarifa African Cinema Showcase became a
Festival with competitive sections and awards.
In 2012 the Festival moved to Cordoba, becoming the African
Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT, and turning into one of the
most consolidated cultural events of the Cordovan agenda.
Al Tarab expands its scope while its experience increases. It is
no longer a question of disseminating African cinema through
the festival, but also of contributing to the continent’s cinema
industry, fragile but not weak, absent but not nonexistent.

The Festival will open on the 21 of March with the
projection of Adiós Carmen by Mohamed Amin Benamraoui
(Morocco, 2013, 104’), the first film shot in Riff (a Berber
dialect) with the participation of Spanish actors.
Synopsis: 1975, North of Morocco. Amar, a ten year-old boy,
lives with a very violent uncle while he waits for the unlikely
return of his mother, who left to Belgium. He becomes
friends with Carmen, a Spanish exiled woman who works at
the local cinema. Carmen discovers him an unknown world,
but upon Franco’s death, she must return to Spain.

LONG-SIGHTEDNESS
In this edition, 16 fiction and documentary films will
compete in “Long-sightedness”, according with the
current tendency of the cinema, where the
boundaries between these two genres are blurring (a
very clear example of this tendency is Le Challat de
Tunis). On one hand, the leitmotif of this section is
the present time (with an exhibition of films
produced between 2013 and 2015), and on the other,
the geographic diversity of these productions, in
order to represent the heterogeneity of African films.
Beyond the topics, the feature films of this section
are notable for their intention of search, reflexion
and innovation in the cinema language. However,
there are some topics that stand out, like
homosexuality whose persecution in many African
countries represents an issue that concerns a great
number of filmmakers as Abdellah Taïa (L’Armée du
salut) or Jim Chuchu (Stories of our lives).
The section includes a secret screening, with a fake
title “Revolution: a replay” about which we cannot
give any further information for the moment.

SHORTLY
Selection of 11 fiction and documentary African short
films that stand out for their reflection about the
cinema language; on this occasion with more
condensed stories, as imposed by the format. It is a
good example of the ability of emergent African
filmmakers.
Among others, this section will host the screening of
Au commencement, the winning short film of the REK
short films competition organized by Dakar Culture
(the prize consisted of the director’s presence and
participation at the 12FCAT – Cordoba) and Solo una
vez winner of the 2014 CEIBA Award for best film at
the South to South Travelling Film Festival of
Equatorial Guinea.

AFROSCOPE
Across 12 titles, “Afroscope” is presented as in-depth
analysis of contemporary Africa through internal and
external looks. Thus, apart from African filmmakers,
renowned European directors such as Aki Kaürismaki
or Pedro Costa show their interest for African realities
in Afroscope.
This section collects a little tribute to Khady Sylla, the
recently deceased Senegalese director, and René
Vautier, known as the “most censored filmmaker of
France”, who died last January.
In honour of Vautier Avoir 20 ans dans les Aurès and
Afrique 50, considered the first anticolonialist film,
will be screened.

EMIL ABOSSOLO MBO
This section collects 7 films featured by Cameroonian
actor Abossolo Mbo that means one of the few
tributes to an African actor. Emil Abossolo Mbo
(Cameroon, 1958), is an actor, writer and theatre and
actors’ director. Passionate about theatre and cinema
from his childhood, in his teens he had already
created a theatre group and participated in cinema,
in Greystoke by Hugh Hudson.

This traditional section of the Festival collects a sample of Latin American cinema on the subject of African descents.
FCAT Cordoba is the only Festival of African cinema in Spanish language. For this reason, one more time, it wants to act as a link between the African world and Latin America. Apart from more
recent titles, in this occasion, the already classic film Orfeu negro, Palm d’Or winner in Cannes in 1959, will be screened.

The 12º FCAT Cordoba schedules the screening of the documentary Congo, un médecin pour sauver les femmes, which examines the work of the gynaecologist and surgeon Denis Mukwege who
specialises in the treatment of women who were victims of sexual abuse in Congo.
Mukwege, winner of Sakharov Award in 2014, becomes an activist and warns incessantly the international community, that does not seem to react despite the millions spent in the peace-building
process in Congo.

and “Shortly” will compete for the following awards:

The Cinema Appetizers, one of the Festival’s most charismatic
activities, come back one more year having as a venue in this
edition the Góngora Theatre.
In this occasion, these informal meetings between
filmmakers, film buffs and journalists will have Javier H.
Estrada as their moderator, thanks to the collaboration
between the FCAT and the film magazine Caimán
(www.caimanediciones.es).
III ACERCA TRAINING FORUM “THE TREE OF WORDS”

Following the path set by the African Cinema Classroom in

2010, the 12 edition of the FCAT Cordoba devotes a space to
training and deepening in the field of African cinema in
Spanish. Thus, through the III ACERCA Training Forum – “The
tree of words: Africa’s Cinemas and cinematographic
journalism for dialogue”, the FCAT seeks to facilitate a unique
reflection space for experts, journalists, critics, researchers
and filmmakers to share knowledge and delve, closely and
with direct testimonies, into the experience of analyzing and
disseminating the cinema of the neighbor continent in
Spanish. The forum will be also attended by a maximum of 20
students and young communication professionals, previously
registered.
The III ACERCA Training Forum – “The tree of words” will have
a service of simultaneous interpretation in Spanish, French
and English, in order to facilitate communication and a true
exchange of experiences. Also, “The tree of words” will reach
all the listeners of Radio Nacional de España (National Radio
of Spain) and Radio Exterior de España (External Radio of
Spain), through the collaboration of Radio 3 which will
broadcast the programme “The tree of words” during the
meetings (the proposal is coordinated by Javier Tolentino,
director of the programme “El Séptimo Vicio” at Radio3).
The FCAT training forum“ The tree of words”, is a proposal
promoted by Al-Tarab and co-organized by the Spanish
Agency for International Development Cooperation, through

the ACERCA Training Programme for development in the
Cultural Sector, with the collaboration of FIAPP.

From the 23 to the 27 of March. Film Library of Andalusia.
From the 23 to the 27 of March, 20 morning sessions will
be held (consisting of one projection and an educational
activity related to the film) at the Film Library of Andalusia,
that will be attended by school pupils and students between
the ages of 8 and 18.
The Learning Space is Al Tarab’s teaching branch. It works
with local schools to bring African cinema – and thus, African
reality- closer to Andalucian students. Being a border region
and a land historically related to the African continent,
Andalusia experiences many migrations and mixes of
populations and cultures. It is critical for young Andalucian to
know other realities about Africa disassociated from
stereotypes, and to know the varied cultural wealth of the
neighbour continent. A good knowledge and understanding
of the “other” are basic in each individual’s training.
The following films will be projected this year: Deweneti
nd
(Dyana Gaye) and Lezare (Zelalem Woldemariam), for 2
nd
grade students; Le ballon d’or (Cheik Doukouré) for 2 grade
students; The Wooden Camera (Ntshavheni Wa Luruli) and
Na cidade vazia (Maria Joao Ganga) for middle school
students; and Making of (Nouri Bouzi), for high school and
training programs students. The Learning Space will offer to
about 3000 students a different look towards Africa and
Africans, facilitating the access to this kind of cinema and why
not, awakening future film buffs.
The FCAT Cordoba is also supported by the Education and
Cooperation municipal services in the implementation of the
Programme which aims to use cinema as a tool for values
education and personal and communal development.
In this educational space, Natalia Andujar’s collaboration will
be critical, as she is a teacher, writer and speaker with a
strong sphere of influence in Islam and women, through the
support that, since 2013, the Halal Institute gives to the FCAT.
AFRICAN VILLAGE

A space devoted to families that comes back to the African
Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT after 3 years of absence. The 3
Space Hall of the Film Library of Andalusia opens its doors to
all the parents and children of Cordoba wishing to participate
at the recreational and educational activities of this new
space at the FCAT Córdoba.
The “African village” will transform the 3 Space Hall where
the traditional cinema seats will be replaced by cosy cushions
and African rugs. Visitors will be able to enjoy a programme
of African cinema especially addressed to children, a
workshop to learn African lullabies in wolof language
(“Lullabies of the Baobab”) animated by the Senegalese
cultural agent Keybis Danso, as well as other recreational and
educational activities

La Casa Azul. From the 21 to the 27 of March.
Dancer and choreographer Aïda Colmenero, the only Spanish
artist certified in the Acogny technique, will teach the
contemporary African dance workshop addressed to children
as well as adults.
The children’s workshop will be held at La Casa Azul on the

21 and 22 of March from 11:00 to 12:30 and from the 23

to the 27 from 17:30 to 18:30. On the other hand, the
adults’ workshop will take place at the same venue and dates,

the 21 and 22 of March from 12:30 to 14:00; and from the

23 to the 27 of March from 19:00 to 20:30.
The technique Germaine Acogny is the only codified and
recognized contemporary dance technique created in Africa.
It is based on the traditional African dance (in particular from
Senegal and Benin) and on contemporary western techniques
such as the technique Graham. Aïda Colmenero Díaz is one of
the 17 people who obtained the diploma in this technique,
after a three-year training programme with Germaine Acogny
at the École des Sables in Senegal. Aïda designed the Lanla
Acogny Dance Technique project in order to spread this
technique to the international level.

From the 21 to the 30 of March, the School of Philosophy
and Arts (University of Cordoba) will host this exhibition in
which, 30 European photographers illustrate through their
lens the 30 articles contained at the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights approved in 1948 by the United Nations.

African Film Festival of Cordoba-FCAT and Amnesty
International organize a number of conferences on
Immigration and Human Rights.
The meeting will be also attended by journalist Donato
Ndongo (Equatorial Guinea, 1950), the best known writer of
African literature in Spanish language, as well as one of the
most outstanding voices against Teodoro Obiang’s
dictatorship, who from 1979 encourages thousands of
Equatoguineans to live in the exile waiting for a change that
will allow them to return.
He will be accompanied by Mahmoud Traoré from Senegal,
on whom is based the book Partir para contar: Un clandestino
africano rumbo a Europa, where Bruno Le Dantec tells the

story of this young man who took three years to get to Ceuta
from Senegal.
Together they will reflect on the underlying reasons that urge
thousands of Africans to immigrate to Europe in extremely
difficult conditions. Amnesty International will participate by
providing information on the current situation when small
boats keep leaving towards Europe despite the financial
crisis.

ORGANIZATION
AL TARAB. Organizing body.
The Center for cultural dissemination of the Strait of Gibraltar
Al Tarab was created in 2004 at the city of Tarifa, in Spain, as
a non-profit organization. Al Tarab promotes and
disseminates African culture in Spain and Latin America as
well as in the African continent through cultural cooperation
activities, using manly cinema.
Al Tarab’s objective is to raise awareness about the myriad
realities of Africa and the Arab world, trying to break the
stereotypes that impoverish them by focusing only in wars,
diseases and misery. Its two main activities are THE AFRICAN
FILM FESTIVAL OF CORDOBA-FCAT and the film dissemination
program CINENÓMADA (NOMAD CINEMA). Thus, Al Tarab
works around two main objectives:
1. To facilitate the development of cultural industries from
Sub-Saharan Africa and the Arab world as a tool to encourage
their economic and human development.
2. To facilitate people’s access to the cinema from SubSaharan Africa and the Arab world as a tool for awareness
raising.
Since 2008 Al Tarab is a non-governmental organization for
development (NGDO) and is well-established as an innovating
tool for cooperation in the audiovisual field between Europe,
Latin America and the Arab countries. Also in 2008, Al Tarab
starts out in the field of cultural cooperation with several
projects in Africa and Latin America. With the aim of
contributing to the African cinema dissemination worldwide,
Al Tarab collaborates with African, European and Latin
American festivals while developing a communication plan
with this new international presence.
In its need of finding sustainable formulas, since 2010 Al
Tarab focuses on networking. Thus, it becomes an active
partner at international projects such as Africafilms.tv,
Babylon, Mokolo o WikiÁfrica.
Finally, through the new network project One World Film
Forum (OWFF), Al Tarab supports professionals from the
African and European audiovisual industry in finding common
spaces for meeting and exchange. Through this initiative, Al
Tarab seeks to promote a greater knowledge among the
international market in the fields of scriptwriting, project

development, economic management or the use of new
technology.
From 2012, Al Tarab starts a new phase by opening its scope
to the Arab world. The ten Arab countries of the African
continent are now joined by Palestine, Jordan, Syria,
Lebanon, Yemen, Oman, Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain,
Kuwait Saudi Arabia and Iraq
African cinema documentation and dissemination Lab
In December 2014, Al Tarab and the University of Seville
signed a collaboration agreement to create an African cinema
documentation and dissemination Lab at the CICUS (US
Centre for Cultural Initiatives).
This agreement marks the beginning of a joint project seeking
to make African cinema visible and to open new ways of
research about the African continent through its audiovisual
production.
Thus, Al Tarab’s film collection (formed by 800 films with
Spanish subtitles and around 5000 in their original version) is
moved to the CICUS headquarters. Thanks to this initiative,
this unique collection of African cinema will finally be
available to the members of the academic community and
the public at large.
The agreement also establishes the basis for the
development of scientific activities such as research projects,
training courses, conferences, seminars, workshops, film
cycles and other training activities, projects and collaborative
scientific activities, among others.
Nomad Cinema
It is a programme promoting African cinema dissemination
through shows, cycles and projections in collaboration with
organizations and bodies upon request. Besides
disseminating African cinema throughout the Spanish
speaking world, it brings an annual revenue flow for
filmmakers and offers different points of view on the
continent’s societies. This programme allows the Festival to
continue throughout the whole year, thus helping the films to
have a greater distribution channel beyond the Festival of
Cordoba.
Through the Nomad Cinema Programme, African
cinema dissemination becomes a tangible and accessible
reality for the Spanish speaking spectator. The last few years
Nomad Cinema has become a reference project, introduced
in international forums as an example of dissemination tool in
the absence of a real network for commercial distribution.
Thus, since 2006 Nomad Cinema disseminates the cinema of
the neighbor continent through 250 cycles in 50 different
cities.
Nomad Cinema has a collection of more than 750 films in
original version with Spanish subtitles (OVSS) on DVD and/ or
Betacam, the biggest multimedia library of the Spanish
speaking world in the field of African cinema, available, upon
request, to organizations willing to plan film cycles.
