Dear School #5 Families,
Where has the time gone? It seems like just yesterday I was welcoming everyone to a new school year. Yet, in
the blink of an eye, spring has arrived and we are in the midst of our final trimester! It is said that time moves
quickly when one is engaged in joyful and enriching experiences. I am proud to say that this is at the very
foundation of the School #5 mission. As we approach the last few months of the year, you can count on us to
continually expose your children to interesting content that stimulates their critical and creative thinking.
Our commemoration of Earth Day is just one instance by which we will achieve this goal. All classes took part in
the April School-Wide Read Aloud, The Buffalos Are Back, by Jean Craighead. This beautiful picture book tells the
little known story of how the buffalo, an American icon, was on the brink of extinction. Students will learn of the
consequences that occur when nature’s delicate balance is disrupted, and of Teddy
Roosevelt’s role in bringing this majestic creature back to the full herds that roam
our country today.
As you know, this year’s theme is the Power of Perseverance. Our teachers have
done a fine job of recognizing students who exhibited academic perseverance.
They include stories of students working hard to achieve grade level
accomplishments such as, memorizing multiplication tables, editing writing and
reaching independent reading goals. The word perseverance has become common place at School #5 and is now
a typical part of student lexicon. Undoubtedly, the celebrations that took place for these personal
accomplishments are another reason why the school days seemed to fly by.
Spring is here and we have so many wonderful things ahead of us, from the students’ smiling faces as they learn
and grow, to all the memorable events that take place during the final months of the school year. I look forward
to sharing all with my School #5 family.
