Why you would be good for this position? (e.g. election pledges, relevant experience. Max. 250

I wish to nominate myself as a Deputy Returning Officer of OUSU for TT 2015.
There are I believe two main skills which the role of DRO requires: integrity and commitment.
Both of these I believe I have.
Over my two terms at the university I have accrued substantial experience in running elections. I
am or have been a type of returning officer for about half a dozen societies and have thus been
involved in running a similar number of elections, and a few hustings.
I am also committed, not only to OUSU but also to the democratic process. My commitment to
OUSU is demonstrated by my work for the scrutiny committee last term, which I am chairing this
term. The latter I demonstrated when I was president of my School Council, where I spent much
of my final school term defending the student’s right to a democratic body against the Governing
Body who wanted to shut the SC down. Finally, as I had my prelims last term I should have
more than enough time to commit to doing the job well.
I look forward to helping with the effective running of OUSU elections this term.

Why you would be good for this position? (e.g. election pledges, relevant experience. Max. 250

Dear Council,
I wish to run for this position for two reasons,
Firstly, I care about Unions- about the right to student representation, the right to express
concerns and desires protected by the independence of our representatives. The relationship of
the university to its unions is something I have fought directly to protect, when as president of
Catz JCR I with the help of OUSU successfully maintained the financial autonomy of our JCR
against an illegal and illiberal college plan to centralise control.
Secondly, I want to be more involved in OUSU. I ran for JCR president because there were
things at Catz and at oxford I wanted to see change. Many of these things coincide with the aims
of OUSU particularly in the areas of Education and Assessment where I hope the education
vision will be the start of serious reform. If I want to continue to fight for changes in these areas
knowing better how OUSU works and how OUSU and the university interact to effect change is
essential. This role would give me the opportunity to pursue each of these two ambitions.

I sincerely believe this is one of the most valuable positions amongst the internal committees.
OUSU is often seen as impenetrably complex and setting a clear, strong and coherent agenda is
the best response to questions about its role. I have experience working for various student
societies and organisations (I was JCR Equal Opps Rep, Polish Society Cultural Officer) and
possess relevant professional experience (I worked as a translator and interpreter for a law firm
in London, where, amongst others, part of my duties was to prepare legible and understandable
explanations of various legal issues surrounding the clients’ cases). I therefore sincerely believe
in the role of the Steering Committee, its vital importance for the functioning of OUSU’s most
democratic and powerful body (OUSU Council) and in the fact that I can have a positive role to
play in this capacity.
