Your child’s baby teeth
Your child needs your help to look after their baby teeth and
maintaining oral hygiene.
Baby teeth are important when food is chewed and when the child
learns how to talk – and of course they prepare your mouth for the
new, permanent teeth.
Baby teeth have to last for longer than most people think. You don’t
lose those last ones until the age of 11-13 years.
What can you do?
•
•
Brush your child’s teeth twice a day – morning and evening
Use a soft toothbrush and a little bit of toothpaste containing
fluoride
•
•
•
Feed your child healthy meals – go easy on the sugar
Give your child water or milk to drink when they’re thirsty
Avoid lemonades, fruit juices, soft drinks or other sweetened drinks
in the baby bottle
It is very important for your child’s teeth that you avoid serving sweet
drinks and sweet foods too often during the week.
When brushing teeth
When you brush your child’s teeth, make sure that you can see where
you’re brushing and that the child’s head doesn’t move around too
much.
This means you get the teeth clean easier and you can both get done
quicker.
How do you brush your
child’s teeth?
• Try to support the child’s
head.You can e.g. place
the child flat on a bed or
changing table.You can also
hold the child’s head gently
against your side.
•
Pull out the cheek a bit or
pull up the lip, so you can
see where you’re brushing.
Pacifier?
It is alright if your child uses a pacifier, because the need to suck is
quite natural in small children.
To avoid the pacifier becoming harmful to your child’s teeth, you can:
• Avoid ”excessive use” of the pacifier
• Help the child to outgrow their need for a pacifier around age 3
• Avoid dipping the pacifier in sugar or honey
Did you know that …
• it’s best to start brushing already at the first tooth.
• if your child is still nursing or using the bottle after year 1, there is
a larger risk of cavities. It helps being thorough when brushing the
teeth.
• your child stand a larger chance of avoiding cavities in their
permanent teeth, if they haven’t had any in their baby teeth.
• children can’t properly clean their teeth by themselves until they are
around 10 years old.
