Postwick Hub – Update No. 20
The first of three weekend closures of the A47 at Postwick begins on the evening of
Friday 17 April as construction of the new bridge over the A47 reaches a critical phase.
Norfolk County Council apologises to all road users for the disruption this will cause,
particularly residents of Postwick, Brundall and other nearby villages, who have already
put up with a long period of inconvenience and will face further disruption over the
weekend and night-time closures.
Access to Postwick village
During the weekend closures it will not be possible to maintain the normal route into
Postwick via the existing bridge over the A47 and Church Road. This is because the twoway traffic control at the site of the new Oak’s Lane roundabout (see picture) will have to
be suspended when this stretch of road is used as the main A47 westbound diversion
route. The bridge will therefore be closed to southbound traffic, reopening when the main
A47 closure is lifted.

The existing bridge carrying the A1042 across the A47 will be closed southbound during
all weekend closures (see plan), so local traffic heading towards Postwick village will have
to divert via the A47 Cucumber Lane roundabout, using the main eastbound diversion.
Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge under escort.
Northbound traffic will still be able to cross the bridge towards Thorpe St Andrew and
Broadland Business Park. Temporary traffic lights may be used to assist traffic flows, but
the bridge will have to be closed to northbound traffic if there is a serious impact on the
eastbound diversion route. If that happens, local bus services, cyclists and pedestrians
will be able to cross under escort, but all other northbound traffic will be diverted via the
A47 and A146 Trowse junction.
On Broadland Business Park, Peachman Way will be closed at the roundabout with
Broadland Way. Business park traffic will have to use Cranley Road and Broadland Way
instead.
These arrangements will apply for the other weekend closures.
Weekend One – 17 to 20 April
The westbound carriageway, towards Dereham, will close at 8pm on Friday 17 April. The
eastbound carriageway will be kept open until traffic has cleared after the Norwich City vs
Middlesborough match (about 11pm). The road will reopen no later than 6am on Monday
20 April, earlier if possible.

Weekend Two – 24 to 27 April
Closure of both carriageways at 8pm Friday 24 April. Please note - there will be delays
on the westbound diversion route while beams are moved from the site compound on to
the A47 itself. Road to reopen no later than 6am Monday 27 April.
There will be no closure over the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, which includes
the Norwich City home match against Fulham.
Weekend Three – 8 to 11 May
Closure of both carriageways at 8pm Friday 8 May. Road to reopen no later than 6am
Monday 11 May.

Overnight A47 eastbound closure 16 April
Preparations for the first weekend closure will require an overnight closure of the
eastbound carriageway. This is currently scheduled for the night of Thursday 16 April,
from 8pm to no later than 6am the next morning. The diversion route will be via the A146,
A143, A12 to rejoin the A47 at Vauxhall roundabout.
Following the installation of the beams further overnight A47 closures will be required
over the coming months, with the slip road diversions available which will reduce the
impact on road users.
Postwick Park & Ride
Postwick Park & Ride site will remain closed on A47 closure weekends to reduce
pressure on the diversion routes, and because reliable running of the buses will
sometimes be impossible to achieve. The nearest alternative site is Harford at the
A47/A140 junction.
Oaks Lane
On completion of the bridge beam installation traffic on the A1042 will then be switched
onto the new half of Oaks Lane roundabout. Traffic will remain under single way lights to
enable the construction of the northern half of the roundabout. Final Surface Course will
follow and on completion Oaks Lane will be reopened.
