Culinary Journey around Thailand
The word “Songkran” is derived from the Sanskrit language,
meaning to “pass” or to “move into”. The Songkran Festival
marks the start of the Thai New Year, and it is the most
important celebration of the Thai lunar calendar.
“Benjarong” is a form of Thai porcelain that dates back to
the 13th century. Literally meaning “five colours”,
Benjarongs were traditionally painted only in 5 colours,
and are reserved only for royalty.
The festival is a symbol of hospitality and love of the Thai
people, emphasizing on maintaining relationships within
families, communities, and society. The Thai people show
respect to elders in the family and receive their blessings
during the festival.
The use of Benjarongs were extended to aristocrats and
wealthy merchants. The designs have since flourished, to
include various flora and fauna, and geometric patterns.
Today, Thais use Benjarong as formal dining ware.
The Songkran Festival in 2015 will be held on 12th to 15th
April, in Thailand, where there will be many festivities to pay
tribute to the role of water in Thai culture and society.
To celebrate the Songkran Festival, Patara has proudly
