The 36th Penang International Dragon Boat Festival (2015) will be held at the Teluk Bahang
Dam, Penang, Malaysia on 30th and 31st May 2015. Crews from around the world are being
invited to participate in the challenging dragon boat race.
A distance of 100 and 250 meters straight course race with 12 or 22 racers seated in a standard
boat compete against competitors. Strength, endurance and skills are important; however
teamwork and harmony are absolutely essential among teammates.

Must Celebrate – Wesak Day in Penang
Wesak day falls on full moon in May, the celebration of three important events in Buddha’s
life. It is an important festival for both Buddhists and Taoists. Wesak is observed traditionally
by Buddhists in Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and the South East Asian
countries including Malaysia. Here in Penang, Wesak is celebrated with much color and
festivity. The holy day is celebrated with temple visits where candles are lit, joss sticks are
burnt and free vegetarian food is distributed to the poor. It will be held at Malaysian Buddhist
Association, Jalan Burma on the 3rd May 2015.
However, the highlight of the festival is the 7 km long grand float procession through the
streets of George Town, Penang’s capital. The colourful floats are accompanied by children
singing traditional songs and monks sprinkling holy water and chanting prayers for world
peace. Visit Penang during Wesak Day and witness a wonderful celebration that embodies the
core principles of Buddhism.
