AHCC Past Resolutions on Mauna Kea
In light of the recent attention on Mauna Kea, we wanted to share
with everyone the AHCC's two most recent resolutions related to
Mauna Kea. Both were adopted our delegates at the 2013
Convention.
Resolution 1352 URGING THE STATE OF HAWAI'I,
GOVERNOR, BOARD OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES,
AND UNIVERSITY OF HAWAI'I TO RECOGNIZE
THE SACREDNESS OF MAUNA KEA
Resolution L1376 URGING THE HAWAII STATE BOARD OF
LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES TO NOT REISSUE A DIRECT
LEASE TO UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII FOR THE MAUNA KEA
SCIENCE RESERVE AND TO REQUEST THAT THE UNIVERSITY
OF HAWAII BOARD OF REGENTS SUBMIT REPORTS AND
SUMMARIES OF THE CURRENT LEASES AND URGE THE
GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF HAWAII NOT TO ISSUE AN
EXECUTIVE ORDER
Legislative Update
The Legislative Session is entering its final phases. By the end of this
week, all measures that are still alive will be returned to their
respective original houses (in other words, House Bills that went to
the Senate will now go back to the House, and vice versa). This is
called Second Crossover.
After Second Crossover, the originating house will decide whether to
agree with changes made to the bill. If the changes are not agreed to,
the bill will be assigned to a conference committee made up of
members from both the House and Senate. These conference
committees will have about two weeks to reach final bill language that
both sides can agree with.
There are also a number of resolutions being considered by the
Legislature at this point. One resolution of interest is SCR 169/ SR
105, Requesting the Department Of Human Services to
Consult the Na Kupuna Tribunal to Form a Working Group
to Determine How the Na Kupuna Tribunal Can Best Assist
the Courts and Native Hawaiian Children in Matters
Relating to Child Custody and Native Hawaiian Children
Who Have Been Removed From Their Homes The AHCC testified in support of this measure and agreed to become
a Na Kupuna Tribunal partner on behalf of Native Hawaiian children.
The AHCC is painfully aware of the multitude of problems that beset
our Native Hawaiian families and that we are singularly set up to
access cultural, genealogical, and nonprofit as well as governmental
support for nativebased experiences. We want to join in the
formation of a working group that can begin to intervene in matters
that have impact on our Native Hawaiian children, on their families,
and on the remedies that some may identify.
