THE PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
Dear Parents:
I hope you will join me in welcoming spring!
We look forward to March 20th and the first
signs of spring.
Spring brings warmer
temperatures, but also preparations for SOL
tests in grades 3, 4 and 5. SOL tests are
scheduled for May 4- June 1, 2015. In
addition we have spring PALS assessments in
the primary grades. Thus, it is very important
that your child is in school each day. Parents
are strongly urged not to schedule vacation or
non-emergency medical appointments during
the testing window.
We encourage parents to visit the school and
welcome comments.
Sincerely,
Marcy Williams, Principal

INTERNET SAFETY
During the month of February,
our 4th and 5th grade students
received a class in internet
safety from Joe Showker, a
representative from RCPS computer staff.
Here are “7 Steps to Good Digital Parenting”
from Family Online Safety Institute.
1. Talk with your child about what they
are doing on the internet.
2. Educate yourself about anything you
don’t
understand
about
social
networking or the internet.
3. Use Parental Controls-activate safety
settings on your computer and internet
devices and children’s cell phones.
4. Set Ground Rules and Monitor screen
time and Apply Sanctions.
5. Friend and Follow- when a child turns
14, it is then socially acceptable for
social media. However, even then
parents need to monitor usage.
6. Explore, Share and Celebrate with
your child appropriate findings and
usage of the internet.
Be a Good Digital Model by curbing your own
bad habits when it comes to digital devices and
model for your children the importance of
having “unplug time” during meals, family time
and other designated times to allow for quality
face time conversation.
Please feel free to visit Joe Showker’s site at

you all enjoyed some fun snow days with your
kids. Thank you for your help in restocking the
Stem Lab. The Lab has been such a hit this

We had another yummy Chick Fil A night. I
hope you are getting to enjoy all of our Family
Dinner Nights. Your support helps our school
so THANK YOU!
Please contact me if you are interested in
becoming more involved with the PTA next
