About the Australian High Commission in Port Moresby
The Australian High Commission represents the Australian Government by advancing
the interests of Australia and Australians in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Our primary
national interest is in a strong bilateral relationship underpinned by a peaceful, secure
and prosperous PNG and Pacific Region. The High Commission is also responsible for
apprising Canberra about developments in areas such as domestic politics, immigration,
economics, trade and investment, culture, defence and development cooperation, with a
view to informing Australia’s foreign policy. The Australian High Commission promotes a
positive image of Australia, enhancing people-to-people links, and delivering consular
assistance to Australians in need.
About the role
The Visits Officer will be responsible for coordinating administrative, logistical and
protocol support for ministerial/high level official visits to PNG as well as Head of
Mission (HOM)/Senior Executive regional visits within Papua New Guinea. The Visits
Officer will liaise with key stakeholders to assist with developing visit programs,
follow up requests for appointments and bookings, and arrange printing of visit
programs as required.
The key responsibilities for this position are:
o Closely support a Visit Liaison Officer where one is appointed specifically to
manage a high level visit
o Ensure post follows the Visit Guidelines for ministerial and portfolio visits and
relevant staff are briefed about their responsibilities
o Assist with developing visit programs, including associated official hospitality
or events, in consultation with relevant stakeholders at post and in Canberra
o Assist with requests for appointments with Ministers and high ranking
officials
o Liaise with Corporate Services, airlines and hotels etc. as required to confirm
accommodation and transport arrangements
o Draft the Transport Plan for visits in consultation with the Travel and
Transport Section
o Arrange printing of program booklets, daily summaries and other briefing and
administrative material as required
o Assist with coordinating arrangements for regional visits by HOM and senior
officials
o Develop relationships with key interlocutors (i.e. PNG DFA Protocol, RPNGC
Traffic Unit, accommodation providers, airline liaison officers etc.) who assist
preparation of and during visits

o Maintain and update biographical details of key interlocutors and provincial
profiles for use during visits
o Prepare official correspondence as required
Required Skills and Qualifications
o Advanced analytical, written and communication skills
o
A professional standard of written and spoken English
o
A understanding of Australian government functions and procedures, and
experience handling protocol matters
o
Well developed administration skills
o
A well developed ability to implement public relations strategies and manage
events which would advance Australia’s interests
o
The ability to collate information and analyse developments in political,
economic and social arenas
o
A high level of flexibility and responsibility and the ability to work effectively
as a team member
Eligibility/Other Requirements
The successful candidate is required to obtain a satisfactory police check, medical
check and maybe required to travel on occasions. A current driver’s license is
required to drive a work vehicle.
