The Global Immunization Division (GID), Center for Global Health, is seeking to fill one permanent and
multiple term positions among its four branches:
Polio Eradication Branch
Accelerated Disease Control and VPD Surveillance Branch
Immunization Systems Branch
Strategic Information and Workforce Development Branch
Position: Medical Officer GS-0602, Epidemiologist GS-0601, Behavioral Scientist GS-0101, Instructional
Design Specialist GS-1750 job series, comparable USPHS Commissioned Corps Officers, Grades 0-3 and
0-4, and Title 42 personnel.
Location: Atlanta, GA

Duties and Responsibilities
Medical Officer and Epidemiologist:
The Global Immunization Division protects the health of Americans and global citizens by preventing
disease, disability and death worldwide from vaccine preventable diseases. It provides:
 national leadership and coordination of CGH efforts to eradicate polio, eliminate measles and
rubella in WHO region;










strengthens global surveillance to prevent, detect, and respond to VPD;
strengthens routine immunization programs, introduces new and under-utilized vaccines; and
promotes safe injection practices in collaboration with international organizations and CDC
CIOs;
provides technical expertise to global partners; ensures provision of technical expertise on
evidence-based research, strategies, and policy at global and country levels in collaboration with
multilateral and bilateral partners;
collaborates with other countries and administers grants for the provision of technical
programmatic, and laboratory support and vaccine procurement for initiatives to support global
immunization targets;
improves surveillance for polio, measles, rubella, and other vaccine preventable diseases by
working with individual countries and WHO regional offices to improve surveillance and to
collaborate with groups within and outside CDC to expand environmental surveillance;
achieves global immunization targets by supporting the strengthening of the
implementation of national immunization policies;
strengthens appropriate vaccination policy development and implementation, identifies
barriers to vaccine acceptance, and develops communication strategies to promote
vaccine uptake and disease reduction;
develops strategies to improve the technical skills and problem-solving abilities of
program managers and health care workers in other countries;
prepares articles for publication in international professional journals and for
presentation at international conferences;
provides technical and operational leadership for CDC’s activities in support of the
initiatives .
Behavioral Scientist
 Provides professional expertise in dealing with the behavioral aspects of public health issues.
 Designs, conducts, and may lead studies to isolate and define the behavioral aspects
contributing to public health issues and problems.
 Develops strategies and programs to address the behavioral component of public health issues,
including educational campaigns to raise awareness.
 Collaborates with other CDC staff in the design of public health programs, to incorporate
behavioral aspects in an integrated approach to improving surveillance and vaccine coverage for
polio, measles, rubella, and other VPDs.
 Maintains scientific liaisons with other professionals from other international immunization
agencies, Ministries of Health, private organizations, and academic organizations to remain
cognizant of the latest developments of in social science, demography, and related sciences as it
relates to division, CIO, and agency function.
 May develop and present workshops and seminars, and represent CDC at conferences and
meetings sponsored by other government agencies, private organizations and professional
associations.
 Evaluates the effectiveness of public health programs by measuring and assessing the extent of
behavioral change.
 Documents program accomplishments and recommends changes in policy, program operations,
and resource levels to improve effectiveness.
Instructional Design Specialist
 Conducts assessments of public health training needs in partner countries and to develop
proposals to meet those needs.
 Makes health education recommendations and suggestions based on experience and expertise
in the development, implementation, and evaluation of interventions, and prevention
educational and training programs designed to control disease and promote health.
 Creates instructional courses, assessments, and job aids for the immunization workforce.
 Collects and analyzes program data to determine the effectiveness and progress of current
training efforts and strategies.
 Incorporates new and emerging developments in education practice and theory, new
technologies and approaches to communicate complex information in a multi-cultural
environment.
 Serves as a technical health education resource on international health education and health
programs.
 Creates instructor and participant guides, self-paced print courses, outline assessments, online
training, and job aids.
 Interacts with CDC partners, Ministries of Health officials and donor organizations to identify,
establish, and assess training assignments with the countries.
 Develops pilot plans, conducts pilots, evaluates results, and revises materials as needed.
 Plans, directs, conducts, and evaluates training courses, conferences, and workshops.
