Oakland, CA: From April 30 to May 21, Pro Arts
presents Project Satellite: Vanessa Marsh, a
photography installation by Vanessa Marsh and
residents of Madison at 14th Apartments in
downtown Oakland.
For this project, Vanessa Marsh ran a series of
workshops inviting Madison residents to learn the
art of pinhole photography while also developing
skills such as editing and making a series of
work. Using cameras made from oatmeal
canisters and a garbage can, participants took
photographs then developed them in a small
darkroom set-up on on-site.
Project Satellite Installation Detail, 2015
In the contemporary mode of selfie photography,
Courtesy of the Artists
residents gravitated towards self-portraiture to
explore themes of self-expression and the construction of identity. The positive and negative prints render surprising
dimensionality of figures that appear to both float and glow simultaneously. While their faces are obscured, their arms
are raised for strength and solidarity.
Project Satellite: Vanessa Marsh is on view from April 30 to May 21, 2015. An Artists’ Reception will be held on First
Friday, May 1, 6-8pm. Exhibition and event are free to the public. Special thanks to Angel Bellaran who assisted Marsh
during the workshops.
About Project Satellite: Project Satellite is a community engagement program in partnership with Satellite Affordable
Housing Associates (SAHA). Pro Arts commissioned three artists to create new installation works for public display at
non-traditional venues in downtown Oakland, as well as at Pro Arts’ gallery.
About the Artist: Vanessa Marsh is a visual artist living and working in Oakland, California. Although the end result of

Dolby Chadwick Gallery in San Francisco, Julie Nester Gallery in Park City, UT, and photo-eye Gallery in Santa Fe,
NM.
