A Pet Shop’s Requirements to sell livestock
1. Must be licensed under the 1951 Pet Vending Act. MLC 2013
are the current issued Guidelines

Qualification for Pet Shop Owners & Managers
The qualifications covers :
• Identification and management for small
mammals , dogs & cats, reptiles & amphibians,
aquatic species, pet & aviary birds, sources of
supply and selling procedures for a range of
different species
• Reviewing animal health and hygiene
problems
• Outline pet trade legislation in relation to
companion animals & the workplace
• Management systems within a pet store
environment selling livestock

• Every PIF member signs up to the PIF charter – the
charter covers areas such as staff training, environmental
impact, practising the 5 Welfare needs and promoting
responsible pet ownership
• PIF is about to launch a “gold standard” for those few
shops that still sell puppies and kittens. The standard
requires an audit and safe guarding on animal source,
animal age and impulse sale. It is not illegal to sell
puppies and kittens but PIF wishes to ensure it is
undertaken to the highest welfare standards.
• Shops acquiring the “gold standard” will be broadcast as
the only pet shops the public can purchase puppies from
safely.

• Although MLC’s are good, Pet Store Management
qualifications help in knowledge, PIF is also launching
“bite size” on line courses for pet shop employees
and anyone involved in the care and wellbeing of
companion animals
• These courses will cover the following taxa and have
been put in place to augument the 2013 MLC’s:
• Rabbits, Hamsters, Guinea Pigs, Gerbils, Birds,
Snakes, Dogs/ Puppies, Cats/Kittens, Aquatics,
Amphibians, Chelonians, Degus, Chipmunks, Rats,
Mice, Chinchillas, Lizards, Ferrets
