Triathletes Challenge Themselves to One of the Best Run of Endurance at XTERRA
Malaysia 2013 organised by Radius Malaysia in partnership with TEAM Unlimited
LABELED AS THE “DE FACTO” world championship of off-road triathlons, XTERRA is the
most-known race series amongst triathletes. Its objective is to bring fun to sports –
competitors get to run off-road, hop across rocks, soar across streams, zig-zag their way
along mountainous trails; essentially to be a kid again, and rediscover their supercharged sense of adventure and wonder.
More than 800 triathletes participated in XTERRA Malaysia 2013, held at Kompleks Sukan
Air Putrajaya, on 27 – 28 April. And indeed they had a „Dirty Weekend‟, a tongue-incheek event title used for publicity. The event was supported by Malaysia Convention &
Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) and organised by Radius Malaysia, in partnership with TEAM
Unlimited (license owner of XTERRA series).
Participants were attracted by Putrajaya‟s adventurous terrain of suburban nature that
was able to fulfill the demand of extreme sports and to give the opportunity for many to
explore the unseen side of Malaysia.
There were four race categories to choose from – Trail Run (5km & 11km), Sprint Triathlon
(750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run), Relay Triathlon (1.5km swim, 30km cycle, 11km run)
and the World Championship Triathlon (1.5km swim, 30km cycle, 11km run), that brought
in appearances of pro-athletes from various corners of the world – Ben Allen, Dan Hugo,
Sam Gardner, Jacqui Slack, Carina Wasle, Meiko Carey, Takahiro Ogasawara and
Malaysia‟s very own Shahrom Abdullah.
Spectators benefited from unique views of Putrajaya‟s city centre and a spectacular
lakeside grandstand finish. The swim was in Putrajaya Lake, a 650 hectare man-made
freshwater lake. This location had been used for other major watersports events including
the F1 Powerboat World Championship and Asian Canoeing Championship. It therefore
had excellent infrastructure and facilities for participants in terms of water safety.
One of the pro-triathletes shared some heartening words about the venue – „Absolutely
brilliant, a true XTERRA course and worthy of being a World Tour Major… it‟s the best run
course on tour.‟
As the official event organiser, Radius not only managed the event per se, it was
involved in pre-event marketing & publicity, security & traffic control, as well as hospitality
management for race participants and their families. The accommodation venue
selected was at the Pullman Putrajaya Lakeside; a beautiful property conducive for the
press conference, race briefing and awards celebration.
Overall, the Radius team was applauded for their great efforts, despite having organised
an XTERRA event for the first time. „Sean and Eunice from Radius should be commended
on a truly amazing production. It‟s hard to believe this was their first XTERRA. They poured
their hearts into the project and carefully considered the details. Their choice of race
director Dave Spence was excellent, as his passion and enthusiasm for the event was
clear in quality of course and spirit of competition. I have no doubt next year this event
will rate 5+ and be one of the biggest stars on the XTERRA World Tour” said Mr Trey
Garman, TEAM Unlimited.
