$10,000 Fine
for Water
Service Project Removes 900 Feet of Fencing Infractions,
says Brown
SACRAMENTO REGION, CA (MPG) -
Governor Brown, meeting with
mayors from across the state,
announced he will propose legislation to help local officials better
enforce conservation requirements
and will direct state agencies to
streamline environmental review
of local water supply projects.
“These measures will strengthen
the ability of local officials to build
new water projects and ensure
that water is not wasted,” said
Governor Brown. “As this drought
stretches on, we’ll continue to do
whatever is necessary to help communities save more water.”
The proposed legislation will
give new enforcement authority to
local entities that don’t currently
have it and increase potential
penalties against water wasters.
Specifically, it will enable the following actions:

• Establish a new penalty of up to
$10,000 per violation, expanding on $500 per day maximum
infraction established in last
year’s drought legislation.
Volunteers in the JustServe Helping Hands service project roll up the 10-foot-high wire fencing after removing it from the wooden poles. Pictured (left

High School except for Kimball, who attends Pleasant Grove High School. Photo by Ron Aguilar
Poggetto cancelled the two projects because
of safety considerations.
“The American River Parkway
Foundation’s whole mission is about volunteers becoming stewards of the Parkway,”
Poggetto said. “So on a given year we have
about 4,000 volunteers that do work for us
and put in about 22,000 hours to improve
the Parkway. Whether that’s removing trash,
graffiti, or taking care of the flora and fauna
it’s very, very important.”
Rancho Cordova resident Erin Seymour
was project manager of the projects that
were called off, and they may be rescheduled in the future. Sacramento County
Natural Resource Specialist Mary Maret
oversaw Saturday’s project for fence
removal, and project management was led
By Margaret Snider
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - The rain last
Friday, though welcome, caused the cancellation of two of the three Saturday service
projects of JustServe Helping Hands, an
annual event sponsored by The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and
open to all members of the community. On
April 25th, the volunteers carried on with
the third project and in a matter of hours
removed more than 900 feet of fencing at
the American River near Dedo Way.
The cancelled projects were to have
taken place at River Bend Park and El
Manto oak groves under the oversight of
Dianna Poggetto, executive director of
the American River Parkway Foundation.
by Michael Goold, director of public affairs
for the Sacramento Cordova Stake of the
Mormon Church, along with Seymour and
Clayton Compton of Mather.
Maret said that the County had wanted
the fence to come down last year but hadn’t
quite figured out what method to use, so
when she knew she had a lot of volunteers,
she thought this was a good place to put
them. “They did such a nice job and were so
organized and brought their tools and made
breakfast for everybody,” Maret said. “It
was very pleasant and they’re great people
to work with.”
About 200 people showed up for breakfast at River Bend Park, including a number
who had signed up for the cancelled projects

• Allow penalties to be issued
administratively by wholesale
and retail water agencies, as
well as city and county governments. This change speeds up
an infraction process involving
courts that was established in
last year’s emergency drought
legislation.
• Enable these entities to enforce
local water restrictions against
water waste, as well as conservation restrictions established
by the State Water Resources
Control Board.
• Allow local public agencies to
deputize staff to issue water conservation-related warnings and
citations.

Meet the Machines at Mather Sports Center
MATHER, CA (MPG) - Cordova
Recreation and Park District
will host its second Meet the
Machines event on Saturday,
May 9th from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30
p.m. at Mather Sports Center,
3755 Schriever Avenue, Mather,
CA.
Children of all ages will
have the opportunity to touch,
climb on, and explore over 20
machines and unique vehicles.
This free event will allow kids to
learn about the vehicles they see
on the road and television every
day. In addition to machines,
children can visit the Kids
Zone filled with bounce houses,
games, balloon animals, and face
painting. The first hour of the
event is horn-free to accommodate children with special needs
and sensitive ears.
“We were so excited to bring
this event to our sports center
last year. The turnout showed us
that the community was excited
as well. We are really looking
forward to having another great
event this year, especially with
some of the new attractions,”
said Jason Kukkola, recreation
coordinator of Mather Sports
Center.

versary of the Safe Drinking
Water Act, which was signed
into law by President Ford and
gave the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency power to set
health-based standards to protect
drinking water.
The Sacramento Suburban
Water District (SSWD) is
encouraging people to help celebrate this special occasion by
passing on the bottled water and
having a drink from the tap during Drinking Water Awareness
Week (May 3rd through May
9th). SSWD recommends it as a
great way to stay refreshed and
help conserve water.
The Pacific Institute estimates
that the production of water
bottles uses the equivalent of 17
million barrels of oil and that it
takes three liters of water to produce one liter of bottled water.
It’s also estimated that of the
50 billion plastic water bottles
Americans use annually, only
23% are recycled.
Help SSWD mark this anniversary by filling up a glass
straight from the faucet, and if
you’re out and about, download
the free WeTap app for iPhone
and Android to find the closest
public water fountain. The app
lets you know the condition of
the fountain, and even if there’s
a bowl available for Fido.

Students Enjoy Morning of Science Facts and Fun at STEM Expo
Story and photos by
Margaret Snider
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) -
On April 24th, Riverview STEM
Academy in Rancho Cordova
played host to 14 different business and organization exhibitors
for a morning of hands-on scientific experiences as students
interacted with the wonders of science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM).
“They’ve been watching tadpoles with microscopes, building
energy, and playing with wind
tunnels,” said Principal Tony
Peterson. “It’s fantastic. I’m very
impressed with what all the businesses put together.”
SMUD, the principle sponsor
of the Expo, presented tiny model
cars that circled a track solely by
use of solar power, and the children were able to put motors
together and figure out how to orient solar panels for the maximum
effect.
“Schools like this one help train
the next generation of leaders and
engineers in the energy field,” said
Jacobe Caditz, energy advisor
with SMUD. “The energy industry
is changing so rapidly now we’re
going to need these kids to grow
up and have the experience and
background to be able to lead in
the energy industry.”
C l a s s e s o f k i n d e rg a r t e n
through fourth grade students,
accompanied by their teachers,
enthusiastically scampered (in
an orderly manner) through each
exhibit, getting their passports
stamped at each one they visited.
Every exhibit allowed the children
direct involvement with science,
technology, engineering, or mathematics principles.
As an example, the Cisco
Webex exhibit allowed the children to communicate using
visual-audio conferencing with
others in Bangalore, India;
Denver, Colorado; and several
other locations simultaneously, as
they would if they were in a visual
conference call.
At the Aerojet exhibit, it really
was rocket science in which
the children were participating. “I think my favorite was the
rocket science one,” said Jazmine
Savorn, 9, a fourth grader. “We
got to see how you can use liquid nitrogen and (learned) about
Silly Putty. “I learned that they
didn’t have enough original rubber
when they were in the world war,
so they made the Silly Putty. It
wasn’t really good for the world
war, but it’s been around for 50
years for kids to play with, as a
toy.”
At the Intel exhibit, the kids
donned “clean suits,” head and
shoe covers, and face masks just
like the technicians do at Intel
and got to see and handle the real
insides of a computer.
Sacramento Splash had the
kids viewing the tadpoles, demonstrated water runoff on a
three-dimensional relief map, and
displayed a live king snake. The
MAD Science exhibit spanned
distances between magnetic
bars with multiple iron rods and
discs, in a manner that appeared
impossible—but wasn’t. All of
the exhibits had an enthusiasic
reception.
Beatrice Tetteh, pediatrician at the Rancho Cordova
WellSpace Health clinic, joined
in with a booth at the last minute
because nurse practitioner Delilah
Mergupe, whose children attend
Riverview, mentioned the Expo in
passing. “I’m really interested in
not just health care but health education and community advocacy,”
Students at Riverview STEM Academy examine marshmallows under vacuum conditions at the STEM Expo
Aerojet exhibit. “Basically, it’s the concept of a vacuum, the vacuum of space,” said Mark Graham, principle
chemist at Aerojet and the presenter of the vacuum demonstration. “It’s very visual to them and something they
can understand.”
Tetteh said. “For this event, helping kids see what’s involved in
a healthcare career, I thought it
would be a great opportunity.”
Some parents were able to
attend the Expo as well. Colleen
Cadwallader, who is volunteer
PTA secretary at Riverview,
helped recruit and sign up
exhibitors for the event. Her
seven-year-old son is a student at
the Academy.
“I think it went great, better than
I had hoped, even,” Cadwallader

Plant a Tree for Arbor Day
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) - On Friday, April 24th,
City representatives and community members planted
a willow oak tree at City Hall in celebration of National
Arbor Day 2015. The tree is a gift from the Sacramento
Tree Foundation. One of their primary goals is to plant
five million trees in the region by 2025, and Rancho
Cordova was one of the first cities to get on board. The
City has planted over 30 trees on City properties since
incorporation in 2003. The Sacramento Shade Tree
Program offers up to 10 free shade trees to SMUD customers. Contact the Sacramento Tree Foundation at
(916) 924-8733 to participate in the program.

Give Where Your Heart
Is on Big Day of Giving
By Polly Rouse, Manager
Bank of America, Cordova
Village Financial Center
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG)
- May 5th is the region’s sec-
ond annual Big Day of Giving,
and I’m writing to encourage my neighbors and friends
to participate. The goal is to
raise $5 million in 24 hours
through online donations for
529 participating local nonprofit
organizations.
Presented by GiveLocalNow
and the Sacramento Region
Community Foundation, in partnership with the Yolo and Placer
community foundations, Big
Day of Giving is a time to come
together and “give where your
heart is.” Last year, more than
12,000 people donated over $3
million to 394 nonprofits serving Sacramento, Placer, and Yolo
counties—in 24 hours! This
year, we can do even better.
I am proud that my employer,
Bank of America, has been a
supporter of GiveLocalNow
and that last year my colleagues
donated 10,000 hours of volunteer time to local nonprofit
organizations. I can’t wait to
donate alongside my colleagues
on this amazing day of celebrating our community!
Whether you give $25, $50,
or even $1,000, you’ll be helping to support the work of
organizations making a real difference in the community. Each
gift will get a boost from the
Big Day of Giving Incentive
Pool and help nonprofit organizations win additional dollars in
prizes. Giving is fast and easy.
Anyone age 18 or older can use
the secure website, www.bigdayofgiving.org, to donate by credit
card from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59
p.m. on Tuesday, May 5th.
Our local nonprofits feed the
hungry, shelter the homeless,
give books to children, train
the unemployed for new jobs,
protect our environment, and
more. But they need our support to continue strengthening
the communities we call home.
Whatever your favorite cause is,
I hope you’ll join me in supporting Big Day of Giving 2015!

From the Mayor’s Corner
In Honor of All Our Veterans
Bob McGarvey
On Monday, May 25th, 2015,
we will be at our ninth annual
Memorial Day Ceremony at
the Mather Veterans Memorial
Plaza. It is an opportunity,
as our theme suggests, for
Remembering our Veterans and
Honoring the California National
Guard. “Always ready, always
there.”
Veterans are fewer in number
every year. We lose more WWII
and Korean Veterans every year,
and the Vietnam Veterans are
beginning to add to that shrinking number. The Veterans of
the Gulf War, Iraq War, and
Afghanistan War are continually
being asked to do more every
year. They give years of their
lives while serving their country.
Yet I have found that even after
giving those years of their lives
to their country, some don’t think
of themselves as Veterans. Their
orders send them to isolated
places of the world for months
or years, and they are separated
from their families. Their duties
and jobs make them responsible for protecting their families
and the rest of our country from
countries and/or terrorists who
would and have harmed and
killed innocents in our nation
like on 9/11.
Some still think that even
though they have given us many
years of their lives to protect us,
unless they are in a war zone,
have been wounded, or other
things that they didn’t do then,
they aren’t Veterans. Educating
the Veterans is another goal that
has to be reached.
When a person signs up and
is sworn into the military and
are trained on what to do in
their field, they receive orders.
Some receive orders that send
them to a war zone, and others do not. When I was in the
U.S. Air Force, my orders didn’t
send me to Vietnam. My orders
told me to get on a KC135 and
fly to Alaska, and to Guam, and
to Okinawa, and to begin laying out the fabric of the quilt of
history that was part of our country’s involvement in Vietnam.
Obeying your orders is what you
do when serving your country.
I looked at the 60s from the
1760s and the 1860s and the
1960s and found that either the
citizens of our country were
preparing for war (1760s),
or engaged in the Civil War
(1860s), or engaged in the
Vietnam War (1960s). The 1960s
also included some of the most
tumultuous times in our history.
In addition to the Vietnam War,
there was the “sex revolution,”
flower children, changing music
(what else is new), the President
being assassinated, two other
leaders being assassinated, and
we landed a man on the moon.
The most important thing that
affected Veterans was the beginning of the end of the Draft. That
has changed our military to an
all-volunteer military.
Personally, I think having a
draft again would force people to
give two years of service to their
country. It could be the military,
but it could also be community service of different types.
Such service could be two years
of working for your church, or
helping the poor, or building
roads, etc. But no matter what
the service was, it would be paid
time giving back to your country.
You would have to work wherever your job was for two years,
and like the military, you would
have to work with people you
wouldn’t otherwise work with.
You would have to learn about
yourself. That would help people
who do not have to do anything
for anyone but themselves. Kind
of scary for some!
From Mayor Bob McGarvey,
God bless, and see you next
time. H

Stricter Medical Marijuana Ordinance
Should Alleviate Complaints
By Chris Gilbert
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG) -
It’s been nearly 19 years since
California voters approved the
use of marijuana for medicinal
purposes. And city and county
officials appear to finally be getting comfortable with how to
regulate it.
The Rancho Cordova City
Council updated its five-year-old
ordinance in January, joining an
increasing number of local jurisdictions in outlawing outdoor
growing.
Mayor Bob McGarvey said
the city has had quite a few complaints, including the skunky
odor. “My wife used to teach,
and they had to move a class out
of a portable classroom because
the smell from somebody growing in the backyard next door
was making it impossible to
teach,” he said. “We had a lady
come to a meeting. She and her
daughter were very ill from the
smell.”
Police detective Mark Baxter
said public safety and security
has been an even greater concern. “What we were seeing
was increased crime,” he said.
“Home invasion robberies, theft,
and homicides. When you don’t
have a permit, these guys are
doing some crazy wiring. We
were having houses nearly burn
down.”
Also, indoor cultivation is
prohibited at residences where
persons under 18 live. “They’re
still subject to the odor and all
the things that come with it,”
said Baxter. “They’re using quite
a few chemicals to speed up
growth these days.”
The revised ordinance restricts
growing to five-by-five square
foot indoor plots that reduce the
number of mature plants that can
be grown to six. Lighting also
cannot exceed 1,200 watts.
In November of 2010, residents passed a measure that
requires all marijuana growers to
pay $600 per square foot for up
to 25 square feet.
“If for some reason the
Federal Government would actually change or eliminate Federal
law, which still makes marijuana
illegal, then we already have a
tax in place,” said McGarvey.
There have been complaints,
including in lawsuits filed in the
other parts of the state, that the
changes make it a lot more difficult to afford growing medical
marijuana.
McGarvey said patients can
still find dispensaries just outside
the city limits. Dispensaries are
now banned inside the city limits, mainly due to worries about
crime.
Baxter said the new ordinance
should make it much easier for
law enforcement to control use.
“The cost of enforcement was
pretty high,” he said. “We had
to keep coming back, checking on outdoor growths. But
a lot of people don’t want to
pay the cost of an indoor grow.
They don’t want to pay for the
equipment. They don’t want to
pay the electricity. I would say
we’ve probably seen at least a
50% reduction in the number of
grows we’ve responded to this
year.”
Violators face citations with
fines. But Baxter said that has
not been enforced yet. “We’ll
still go out on an education
basis,” he said. “They’re still
their personal property, technically. We say you need to move
this inside into your own grow
room and get that permitted.
We’ll be back in the next couple
or three days to see that you’ve
complied.”
But Baxter agrees the true
impact of the new ordinance
won’t be known, or felt, until
plants start getting larger, around
June or July and through the fall
harvest. H
$10,000 Fine for Water Infractions, says Brown
Continued from page 1
This legislation will give all
water agencies and local governments a consistent, minimum
set of enforcement authorities to
achieve required water conservation. Local water agencies with
existing authorities to enforce
against water waste can continue to use those authorities.
Under the proposed legislation,
any monetary penalties from
this enforcement will be used for
local conservation efforts.
Separately, to streamline
environmental permitting for critical water supply projects, the
Governor has directed his Office
of Planning and Research and
other state agencies to help local
water agencies reduce the time
required to comply with staterequired environmental reviews.
These permit streamlining efforts
will focus on projects that can
increase local water supplies with
limited environmental impacts.
The Governor’s Office will also
explore legislative changes that
can speed up delivery of critical
water supply projects.
In recent weeks, Governor
Brown has convened top agricultural, environmental, urban water
agency, and business leaders
from across California to discuss
the state’s drought and conservation efforts.
In April, Governor Brown
announced the first ever 25%
statewide mandatory water reductions and a series of actions to
help save water, increase enforcement to prevent wasteful water
use, streamline the state’s drought
response, and invest in new technologies that will make California
more drought resilient. This order
included measures to help replace
lawns with drought-tolerant landscaping and old appliances with
more water and energy efficient
models; cut water use at campuses, golf courses, cemeteries,
and other large landscapes; prevent potable water irrigation at
new developments unless waterefficient drip systems are used;
and stop watering of ornamental
grass on public street medians.
Within days of the Governor’s
order, the State Water Resources
Control Board released its
framework to achieve the mandatory water reductions and the
California Energy Commission
approved new water appliance
standards to save billions of
gallons of water per year. The
California Department of Water
Resources also announced that
due to the severe drought it will
install an emergency temporary
rock barrier across a Sacramento
San Joaquin Delta channel to help
prevent the saltwater contamination of water that 25 million
Californians depend on.
These measures build on
unprecedented action by the
State Water Resources Control
Board over the past year to prohibit other wasteful water use and
encourage Californians to conserve, including strict limits on
outdoor irrigation (two days a
week in much of California) and
bans on hosing down outdoor
surfaces, decorative water fountains that don’t recirculate water,
and car washing without an automatic shut-off nozzle. Bars and
restaurants are also now required
to only serve water upon request
and hotels must ask guests staying multiple nights whether linens
and towels need to be washed.
Governor Brown proclaimed
a drought state of emergency in
January 2014, and for more than
two years the state’s experts have
been managing water resources
to deal with the effects of the
drought, which include severely
curtailed water supplies to agricultural producers, farmworker
job losses due to fallowed fields,
drinking water vulnerability in
communities across California,
heightened fire danger, and
threats to endangered and threatened fish and wildlife.

state’s drought response, visit

Californian should take steps to
conserve water. Find out how at

NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS:
If you are considering bidding on this
property lien, you should understand
that there are risks involved in bidding
at a trustee auction. You will be bidding
on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction
does not automatically entitle you to free
and clear ownership of the property. You
should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If
you are the highest bidder at the auction,
you are or may be responsible for paying
off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear
title to the property. You are encouraged
to investigate the existence, priority,
and size of outstanding liens that may
exist on this property by contacting the
county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may
charge you a fee for this information. If
you consult either of these resources,
you should be aware that the same

“Isn’t it hard to
catch fish
without water?”
It was just one of those
things. It didn’t really mean
Marvin Pincus had lost his
mind. Consider this yourself for
a minute. Marvin had opened
the mail that morning and in it
was the Fenwick glass fly rod
he’d ordered. Oh, it was used,
of course. But there’s a feel to
a Fenwick that only a man dedicated to a life of using dry flies
can appreciate.
The weather was gorgeous.
The fish were biting on Lewis
Creek. But there was a hitch.
Marvin had broken his ankle the
previous week and was temporarily in a wheelchair. It was his
right ankle, so he couldn’t drive
down to the creek. And there, in
his hands, was the Fenwick. He
put it together, attached a reel
and some four-weight line and
set it on the couch and looked
at it.
Marjorie was off visiting her
sister, so she couldn’t help him.
But there’s a pull, an irresistible draw to a fly rod. He had
to cast it.
Now.
It took Marvin about 20 minutes to negotiate the front steps
with that wheelchair and the
Fenwick. Oh, he could’ve called
a friend to help him, but how
could he possibly explain why?
Finally, he negotiated the
sidewalk and then the edge of
the street itself. There were
no cars coming this early
afternoon.
Up came the Fenwick. A few
swishes in the air told Marvin
he’d done the right thing in
ordering the rod. So he ran out
some line and began casting.
About halfway across the street
was a large mulberry leaf. He
did a double haul on the line
and sent the fly toward the leaf.
It took several tries before he hit
it, but when he made that cast,
you could’ve sold tickets to it.
His fly came to rest about three
feet above the leaf and then
fluttered gently down onto its
target. Marvin’s smile said it all.
Then the school bus came
around the corner full of kids
heading home, and Marvin realized he was casting a fly rod
from a wheelchair onto dry
pavement.
“Hi Mr. Pincus!” yelled one
of the kids. “Catch anything?”
“A little slow today, Billy,”
he yelled back.
“Isn’t it hard to catch fish
without water?” Billy yelled.
“It’s okay, son,” Marvin
said with a grin. “I’m using a
dry fly!”

Lady Lancers Bitten by Diamondbacks
By Mike Bush
RANCHO CORDOVA, CA (MPG)
- Two hits in the first inning
helped the Cordova High School
softball team pose a threat to
Union Mine in the big Sierra
Valley Conference (SVC) showdown on Monday, April 27th.
But the damage was already
done by the visiting Lady
Diamondbacks, who scored
three times in the top of the
frame that led to a 5-0 win over
the Lady Lancers. Both teams
were tied for first place in the
SVC at 13-1 each as they entered
the conference finale.
Now the Lancers—who
closed out the regular season
on Thursday, April 30th with a
non-conference road game at
Bear River—finish second place
in the conference. Union Mine
wins its second SVC crown in
three seasons.
Cordova now awaits its playoff seeding by the Sac-Joaquin
Section, which is expected to
release playoff brackets on its
website (www.cifsjs.org) next
week.

SVC game against the Diamondbacks. Photo by Photo by Rick Sloan
Tiana Brown doubled to leftcenter field in the bottom of
the first inning for Cordova
(13-2 in the SVC, 19-3). Then
with two outs, Lancer pitcher
Megan Stacy singled to centerfield to move Brown to third.

Chumps or Champs, and Sometimes Both
“Hey, sweetheart, at least
I’m not one of those guys that
lies around all weekend watching golf or chugging beers while
I turn the volume up on the
NASCAR madness, neglecting the ‘to-do list’ through it all.
“I don’t get up early and slink
out to go fishing, leaving you
a note to have fun shopping
alone at OSH and Home Depot,
and I’ll be home for dinner.
“I just like to relax in the evenings when I get home from
work while watching some
baseball or basketball. During
football season I like to catch
some of that on the weekends
and Monday nights. And I’m so
considerate these days --- I DVR
all of it so I can skip through the
commercials to cut down my
hours before the tube, freeing
up more time for your HGTV
and Food Network shows.
“And I really love it when you
settle in for awhile and watch
the games with me. I appreciate
your level of sports knowledge
and I’m sometimes surprised at
the things you say (and I try not
to let you see me roll my eyes at
other times). And I only watch
hockey when your not home
or after you have gone to bed.
“So tell me, honey, am I
still your champ, or just a
chump? Don’t answer that!
At best, the answer is probably, ‘A little of both.’”
You could say the same thing
about most of the people all
around the wide world of sports;
and, then, there are some that are
just champs (we think) and an
awful lot more that are chumps.
You don’t necessarily have
to have a championship on
your resume to be a “champ.”
Keeping it relatively local,
when you think about the cream
of the crop you would likely
name people such as Steph
Curry, Tim Flannery, Bruce
Bochy, Buster Posey, Madison
Bumgarner and a number of
current Giants, Ronnie Lott,
Steve Young, Brent Jones,
Dave Stewart, J.T. Snow,
Vlade Divac, Kevin Johnson,
Tara VanDerveer, Mike
Montgomery, Nate Thurmond,
and of course, Willie Mays
and Willie McCovey. And
there is the injured Hunter
Pence, hanging on the railing supporting his teammates,
waiting to get healthy and for
his PenceFenceCatch bobble-head to go public and
claiming, “I would rather die
than not make that catch.”
You never hear anything bad
about those people, but you can
still never be 100% positive
about their pure “champness.”
Now, what the heck is
going on with the Kansas City
Royals? That team was universally admired last fall for the
great run they had, and for the
character and drive they displayed right through to Game
7 of the World Series where
they came up short against the
Giants. Maybe that frustration has gotten to them, because
they seem to be taking it out
on everybody they play. The
Royals have been having beanball wars and bench-clearing
rumbles on a regular basis
this season --- already squaring off with the Athletics,
Angels and White Sox, prompting Cleveland pitcher Trevor
Bauer to wear boxing gloves
in the dugout when the Royals
came to town. K.C. --- almost
a champion, but not quite.
But when it comes to rumbles on a regular basis, turn
to the NBA Playoffs that are
looking more and more like
WrestleMania than basketball. All the talk is about
Kevin Love’s dislocated shoulder that will likely keep him
out of the rest of the playoffs
for Cleveland, suffered when
he tangled with Boston’s Kelly
Olynyk chasing after a loose
ball. Afterward, Love stated he
felt Olynyk’s play was an intentional attempt to injure, which
Olynyk flatly denied. Love,
who hooked up with Cleveland
and LeBron James in a quest for
a championship after wallowing
in NBA limbo in Minnesota for
years, was clearly speaking out
of emotion and disappointment.
That play appeared a bit
reckless but rather mild compared to some others and to
the general tenor of the action
throughout the playoffs. The
NBA basketball crowd thinks
things should be completely
different in the playoffs and
that the officials should just
“let them play.” Okay, but to
what extent? Instead, maybe
they should clean the playoffs up a bit before somebody
takes a two-forearm shiver to
the chops followed by a swat to
the face, or somebody catches
a swiping, backhanded punch
to the chin and wrecks his knee
when he falls, or somebody
suffers “accidental” multiple
fractures to his mug, or….oh,
those things already happened.
Add Kendrick Perkins and J.
R. Smith to the “chumps” list.
Whenever you hear the
announcers say, “That’s a good
no-call,” you should interpret that as, “There should’ve
been a call there.” It’s a good
bet that the chump that got his
chest bruised by a high-flying LeBron James knee when
he was run over as the twotime NBA champion scored a
clock-beating lay-up was not
lying on the floor in pain thinking, “That was a good no-call.”
There seems to be plenty of
chumps around the NBA and a
bunch of them are on one team,
the L. A. Clippers…DeAndre
Jordan, just because he couldn’t
sink a free throw to save his
life; Matt Barnes, with his look
and attitude; Blake Griffin, who
has the reputation that nobody
likes him; Chris Paul, with his
little flops and falls that force
the refs to call fouls on the
defenders on punk-like plays
that have nothing to do with
the spirit of the game. On the
other hand, the Warriors seem
to have a roster and staff full
of “golden boys,” good dudes
on a roll. Perhaps it would be
fitting if Golden State, awaiting the start of the second round
after sweeping New Orleans,
was to go on to win its first
championship in, like, forever.
There are some cases of a
kind of transformation --- from
once a champ, but now a horrible chump…or much worse
--- guys like Ray Rice, Adrian
Peterson, Lance Armstrong,
Oscar Pistorius, Aaron
Hernandez and the like. Those
probably had a most awful
“chumpness” in them all along.
The vast majority seem to
have some of both qualities,
to varying degrees and categories: Alex Rodriguez,
Barry Bonds, Brian Wilson,
Pablo Sandoval (sigh), Tiger
Woods, Mark McGuire, Jose
Canseco, Richard Sherman,
Kobe Bryant, Urban Meyer,
John Calipari, Jim Boeheim and
on and on with the endless list.
“So, my dearest, whatever label you might apply, or
whatever you or anybody else
might think of me and my relative sports addiction, it is safe
to say that I am not alone.” H

In the April 23rd road conference game in Galt, the Lancers’
Jocelyn Brown banged out
three of the team’s 10 hits that
included a triple and three RBIs.
Stacy, Vanessa Cain, and Leila
Cooper had two hits each.
Cordova led 3-1 until the top
of the seventh inning, when it
scored its remaining runs to
ground the Lady Hawks.
Cordova 13, Galt 0
The Lady Lancers proved
to be too much for the visiting Lady Warriors in their April
22nd game. Cordova scored in
the first four innings. The game
was called after the top of the
fifth because of the mercy rule.
Mason Pittaro clubbed a grand
slam for the Lancers. She went
2-for-3 with five RBIs. Tiana
Brown also had two hits. Nikki
Jones, Jocelyn Brown, Kai’lee
Cole, and Stacy had a hit each
that added up to eight for the

Cordova players.
“We sucked it up first inning,”
said Cordova head coach Lindy
Willeford of her team posing a
threat to the D’backs.
But in the top of the first
inning, the D’backs took advantage of two hits and two Lancer
errors to score their three runs.
A fter the firs t inning,
Cordova’s only hit was in the
seventh inning when Tracy
Mahony singled to centerfield.
“We didn’t adjust to two-strike

went up there and tried to hit
home runs. We did not play our
game.”
If Hammer wasn’t sending
Lancer batters back to the dugout on strikeouts, the D’backs’
defense registered the remaining outs to secure the win and
the program’s second SVC title
in three seasons. Union Mine
scored a run each in the fifth and
sixth innings to secure the win.
two games earlier this week, the
Cordova High School baseball
team was competitive from start
to finish.
In Tuesday’s Sierra Valley
Conference (SVC) road game
at Galt, the Lancers fell to the
Warriors, 6-2. Cordova (1-12
in the SVC, 6-19) responded to
Galt’s early lead at 6-0 with a
run in the third and sixth innings.
The Warriors scored four in
the first inning and two in the
second.
The Lancers had five hits in
the game. Brandon Buck went
2-for-2, while Lancer teammates
Logan Appino, Jeremy Buck,
and Jarrett Harris had a hit each.
Cordova 9, Kennedy 6 (8 innings)
Monday’s non-conference
game was tied at 6-6 until the
top of the eighth inning when
Cordova plated three runs for the
win. The Lancers led 4-0 until
the bottom of the fourth inning;
then Kennedy started its process
to tie the game.
Jeremy Buck and Zachery
Guerrero had two hits each for
Cordova, which had eight in
the game. Appino joined Jacob
Jaquez, Harris, and Jeremiah
Anderson with a hit each.
Rosemont 8, Cordova 1
In an SVC home game on
April 23rd, Spencer Gudgel and
Jeremy Buck had two hits each
for Cordova, which had six in
the game.
El Dorado 14, Cordova 1
The Lancers also had six
hits in the April 21st SVC road
contest at Placerville. Appino,
Jeremy Buck, Jaquez, Harris,
Austin Smith, and Brandon
Buck had a hit each.
On Thursday, April 30th,
Cordova played its final home
game of the season against
Liberty Ranch. On Tuesday,
May 5th, the Lancers conclude
the season at Union Mine. H

Mark Teixeira, New York
The aging first baseman of the Yankees was
able to call back several years last week
with five home runs and 10 RBIs. The Yankees won five of seven games behind Teixeira’s bat. He was especially good against
the crosstown rival Mets, going 5-for-11 in
the series, with a pair of home runs and four
RBIs in the opener, ending the Mets’ 11game winning streak.
Chris Archer, Tampa Bay
The young righthander ran his streak of no
earned runs allowed to 27.1 innings with
outings against Boston and Toronto. In 5.2
innings vs. Boston, he gave up an unearned
run in a 1-0 loss. In his next start, he tossed
seven innings and allowed just two hits
and a walk to the Blue Jays. His totals for
the week were nine hits, two walks and 16
strikeouts in 12.2 innings.
Adeiny Hechavarria, Miami
The Marlins’ shortstop—certainly not known
for his bat—owns a nine-game hitting streak
and ended the week with four multi-hit
games in his last five. For the week, he batted .500 with a 1.270 OPS, 10 RBIs and eight
runs, helping the Marlins to a season-best
five-game winning streak. In 335 games entering this season, Hechavarria had just six
homers. He already has a pair in 2015.
Jake Arrieta, Chicago
So far in 2015, Arrieta is the Chicago Cubs’
ace, not Jon Lester, and it’s not even close.
Last week, the young righthander won
twice, defeating the Pirates and Reds, both
on the road. In 13 innings, he walked three,
yielded eight hits and whiffed 13. He is
now 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA on the season. He
has given up only six runs in his four starts
this season.

Surging Astros serving notice to AL West.
Can rest of lineup step up to support Mike Trout?
Batted just .207 last week.
Bottom four spots in order batting a paltry .193.
Batting .250, with .683 OPS vs. LH, .250/.682 vs. RH.
Leadoff spot on-base percentage is .237, only Oakland is worse.
Prince Fielder hitting .361, rest of team .192.
Batting just .194 with a .229 on-base percentage vs. lefties.
Cleanup hitters yet to homer this season.
Dominant Aroldis Chapman has allowed four hits, three walks with 15 Ks.
Batting .324 during current five-game winning streak.
Struck out 78 times with 72 hits over last nine games.
Yet to be caught stealing in 11 attempts.
Fewest runs in majors.
Only one home run in seventh inning or later.
The San Diego Padres lead the National League in
runs so far this season. That is unfamiliar territory
for the club to be sure. The offseason acquisitions of
outfielders Matt Kemp, Justin Upton and Wil Myers
have thus far reaped benefits. Perhaps the most telling stat is the team’s .318 batting average with runners in scoring position, the best mark in the majors...
The season-ending injury to starting pitcher Adam
Wainwright is a serious blow to the St. Louis Cardinals. As of Sunday, the Redbirds’ rotation led the
majors with a 2.39 ERA, and opponents were batting
just .159 with runners in scoring position against the
entire staff. The Cardinals are the only team holding foes under .200...Kansas City’s bullpen is as
dominant this season as in 2014, even without injured
closer Greg Holland. Opponents are slugging just .194
off of Royals relievers, who own a 0.78 ERA...No player
has a hit with the bases loaded this season against the
Los Angeles Angels pitching staff...Even with the
trade of top hitting catcher Derek Norris to the Padres
over the winter, Oakland catchers lead all backstops
with a .324 average and .554 slugging percentage. Although it must be noted that Norris has eight doubles
and a pair of homers this season. Oakland catchers
have eight extra-base hits...Detroit hitters have
strode to the plate 28 times with the bases loaded this
season. The major league average is 16. The Tigers’
total equals that of Washington (8), Philadelphia (8),
Cleveland (7) and Milwaukee (5) combined... The New
York Yankees and the Toronto Blue Jays have each
swatted 10 home runs in the seventh inning or later
this season. The Milwaukee Brewers, struggling to
find any offense, have hit just one in the late innings...
Veteran catcher A.J. Pierzynski signed with the
Atlanta Braves over the winter in hopes of getting rare
starts behind the plate while being used primarily as
a pinch-hitter. But with Christian Bethancourt’s struggles, Pierzynski has found himself in the lineup about
half the time. Both catchers had 34 at-bats at the end
of the week. Pierzynski is batting .382 with a 1.138
OPS. Bethancourt is scuffling at .147/.400...During the
New York Mets’ recent 11-game winning streak,
the team didn’t exactly overpower with their bats. The
Mets hit just .273 with only eight home runs, averaging
5.2 runs per game. However, their pitchers had a 1.091
WHIP and 2.73 ERA, giving up 3.7 runs per game.
NUMBERS GAME
.321
The batting average for the Detroit
Tigers’ infield, led by shortstop Jose
Iglesias (.379) and first baseman Miguel
Cabrera (.377) (below). Second baseman
Ian Kinsler and third baseman Nick Castellanos round out the quartet.
TURN BACK THE CLOCK

Commissioner Bud Selig proposes
harsher penalties for PED use. His plan
calls for a 50-game suspension for the
first offense, 100 games for the second
and a lifetime ban for a third positive
test. His proposal also includes a ban on
amphetamines for the first time.
TRIVIA CORNER

with a 2.5-game lead in the American
League West. Can you remember the
last season that the Astros were in first
place as late as April 26?

TRIVIA ANSWER: You have to go all the way back to 2006 when
the Astros were in first place as late as April 27. During the 2004
season was the last time the club was in first place in May.
