What is Rés do Chão?
Rés do Chão (Ground-floor) is an urban rehabilitation and renewal
project. Its main goal is the revitalization and stimulation of cities
through the reoccupation and rehabilitation of vacant groundfloor spaces. The project began in 2013 and won an award by the
Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation under the FAZ – Ideias de Origem
Portuguesa initiative; since 2014, it functions with the support of the
BIP-ZIP program of the Lisbon City Hall.

What issue does it aim to solve?
Rés do Chão recognized a persistent issue on Portuguese urban
environments: the vacating of commercial ground-floor spaces. This
situation has lead to the degradation of buildings and public space,
as well as to the abandonment of streets and the loss of street life
dynamics.
