Introduction
to Resolution Circle
Resolution Circle is a University of Johannesburg initiative, partly
funded by the National Skills Fund. It operates as an independent,
commercial company, through commercial partnerships and projects.
Resolution Circle was started in 2012 and has since grown to a
company with more than 100 employees. Through its partnerships
with industry, it has successfully developed many products in the
market and filed various patents.
Resolution Circle is a uniquely horizontally integrated ecosystem
that specialises in developing innovations in support of the
commercialisation process. This includes both IT and non-IT solutions.
Resolution Circle is conveniently located in Johannesburg, no less than
3km from two large public universities (University of Johannesburg and
Wits). It is also close to the head quarters of prominent companies in
South Africa.
Products and Services
Intern Development Programme
Resolution Circle offers an Engineering Intern Programme. During the
one-year programme, interns develop 17 different skills areas that are
divided into four groups, i.e. vocational skills, professional development,
professional life, and technical work.
This is offered as an outsourced service for companies that are required
to take on interns but do not have the necessary facilities or resources.
This programme qualifies for BBBEE Skills Development.

R&D projects
Resolution Circle undertakes commercial R&D projects, with a strict
view to introduce commercial products in the market. This may
start with a concept and end with a prototype or even a small-scale
production run. Each project is unique and starts with a signed term
sheet that specifies the start and end dates, deliverables and pricing.
All projects are project managed and completed under non-disclosure
agreements.
Prototyping and small-scale manufacturing
Resolution Circle has extensive specialised facilities for prototyping
and small-scale manufacturing. Prototyping and small-scale
manufacturing jobs are priced based on time and materials.
R&D Lab rental
Resolution Circle offers an outsourced R&D service, which provides an
efficient way to start a managed R&D facility for companies. Additional
benefits include intern induction, acting as a buffer for oversupply of
bursars, and a test bed for innovation.
Training and Events
The extensive training and events facilities allow Resolution Circle
to host various events and offer professional training. Resolution
Circle develops and presents its own courses, but prefers to partner
with industry to take applied course material to market. Each deal is
negotiated separately and based on merits.
Recruitment
With the high number of interns every year, Resolution Circle is well
placed to provide specialised recruitment services.

R & D Infrastructure
The R&D infrastructure was designed to provide commercial
prototyping services, including small-scale manufacturing. The
philosophy is one of “idea-to-barcode” – a horizontally integrated
ecosystem where innovation can come to life in prototypes and smallscale manufacturing. Some of the dedicated technology areas housed
in the 7500sqm Resolution Circle Towers are the following:















A fully reconfigurable events facility is available that can accommodate
between 10 to 250 people. Two dedicated commercial training
facilieties are available. These have advanced audio-visual facilities,
catering is done by the in-house executive chef, and printing materials
can be done through the in-house high-volume printing press.
Resolution Circle offers a dedicated business incubation area. This
incubator is customised to support technology-based businesses,
including hardware and software-based businesses. The incubator
provides collaborative spaces or team offices with access to
prototyping facilities, technical resources and services. The main focus
is on short-term stays while developing prototypes.
Track Record
Resolution Circle has successfully delivered large numbers of
engineering interns. Resolution Circle has partnered with several
companies on aspects ranging from improvements to existing
products, to the development of products destined for the international

BBBEE
Technical Skills
Resolution Circle specialises in developing technology interns, from
technology diploma interns to PhD graduates. Resolution Circle has
a capacity for 300 interns per year, who are supervised by more than
100 in-house, industry-seasoned professionals.
Other Support Resources
The Resolution Circle ecosystem offers various other services as part
of supporting the commercialisation effort, such as an on-site IP lawyer,
packaging design, graphics design, video production and much more.
Resolution Circle offers various Broad Based Black Economic
Empowerment (BBBEE) spending models to convert compulsory
BBBEE-spend to valuable opportunities.
R&D Tax Benefits
R&D projects may qualify for the South African Revenue Services
(SARS) special R&D tax incentive that allows a 150% tax deduction on
approved projects.
Training Workshop
Resolution Circle has a 3500 sqm dedicated training workshop with
experienced artisans as supervisors and the best industrial-grade
equipment.
