Saturday, May 2: Miss Relay for Life Pageant
The Nelson County Miss Relay for Life Pageant will be held at RVCC on Saturday,
May 2. The pageant is open to ages 0—22, and contestants do not have to be
Nelson County residents. Admission is $5, and children under 5 get in free. All
proceeds benefit Nelson County Relay for Life. Doors open at noon; the pageant
begins at 1:00pm.

Thursday, May 14: Legislative Wrap-Up Breakfast
The Nelson County Chamber of Commerce Legislative Wrap-up Breakfast will be held in the RVCC
Auditorium on Thursday, May 14. Doors open at 7:30, and the breakfast begins at 8:00 AM. Come
hear the latest news on the 2015 General Assembly legislation and speak directly to your elected representatives. Invited speakers: Senator Creigh Deeds, Delegate Richard “Dickie” Bell, and Delegate
Matt Farris. All Nelson County residents are welcome to attend. Due to a required commitment to the
caterer, all “no shows” will be responsible for payment.
Cost: $11.00 for Chamber Members, $13.00 for non-members. Reservations are necessary. RSVP

Monday, May 18: NCCO Spring Finale Concert
The Nelson County Community Orchestra will present its Finale Concert for the
season on Monday, May 18th at 7:30 pm, in the RVCC Auditorium. The performance
will include a Telemann Violin Concerto with a Guest Soloist, Glenn Miller Swing Dances and guest performances by violin students in the Nelson County String Education Program. The concert is free and
open to the public.
New musicians are always welcome to join the orchestra – so if you play, or used to play an instrument, please contact us! All levels are welcome, ages 13 and up. Rehearsals are Mondays 7-9 pm in

The Wildflower Meadow & Master Gardeners Plant Sale
IT’S ALIVE!!!
No, it’s not a horror movie monster, it’s the beautiful wildflower meadow that amazed
us all last year. Now that spring has sprung, the profusion of native grasses and wildflowers is soon to once again shower us with beauty. Butterflies, bees, and a host of
pollinators rely upon this and other diverse ecosystems for their survival. Once again
the Nelson County Master Gardeners will be hard at work ensuring the meadow’s success. Anyone wishing to join in the effort can email the Virginia Cooperative Extension

Saturday, June 27: 1st Annual Save SK8 Nelson Festival
A fundraising event for Nelson's only skate park!
In mid-2014, our insurance company handed us a hard choice: either get rid of the skate park, or lose our insurance. After
months of searching, we were able to find an insurance provider that would cover the skate park--to the tune of an additional
$3000 per year. The skate park is perhaps the best-loved and most-used feature of our recreational facilities, and regularly
hosts children and adults alike. And, as Nelson County's only skate park, we feel it is worth keeping—but we need help to
shoulder this staggering increase in our insurance premium. Proceeds from this event will go toward that expense, and any
funds raised beyond $3000 will be used to maintain and improve the park and RVCC.

Saturday, July 25: Hoop Dreams!
If you’ve been out to RVCC’s outdoor basketball court recently—and more specifically, if
you’ve tried to bounce a ball on it—then you know what rough shape the poor court is in.
The pavement is warped, unlevel and cracked, grass keeps forcing its way through those
cracks, and the court lines are little but a memory.
This summer, we’re on a mission to fix all this by installing new safety goals, painting new
lines, and resurfacing the paved area in a way that will allow for multi-purpose use. In addition to basketball, the court could
support futsal, learning to ride a bike, kickball games, and potentially even a hitting wall for handball or tennis.
The Hoop Dreams Festival will be similar to the other Super Saturday events in that it will feature live music, food, beverages,
and family-friendly activities, but there’s still lots of planning and brainstorming needed to make sure the basketball court becomes all that it can be.

RVCC Welcomes Digital Relab
RVCC is pleased to welcome Peter Agelasto IV and Richard Averitt as the newest tenants
to join our Community Center. Peter and Richard are setting up office space for their project, Digital Relab, in room 8.

If You Build It...
As summer draws near, we start turning our sights and dreams to our grounds and recreation fields. We’ve covered some of those plans in the previous pages: the wildflower meadow, the skate park, the basketball court.
But summer is the season for baseball, and our baseball field just keeps getting better. We offer huge thanks to
the Afton Christian School, who helps us maintain and improve the field in exchange for using it for their youth
baseball team; to the Nelson Seadogs Travel Baseball team for their ongoing work and use of the field; and to
Jeremy Parker of Creation Appreciation Landscaping for his generous offer to begin leveling the outfield, improving the infield, and providing maintenance for the grass in addition to the work he already does to maintain the RVCC
grounds.
The Nelson Seadogs are currently seeking a coach. If you are interested in coaching the 15-18 Seadog League, or
know of someone who might be interested, please contact [email protected].
This is a community ball field, and we want more of you to take advantage of it. Have you thought about organizing a baseball or softball league? Kickball? Tee-ball? If you’ve got a game, we’ve got the field. Please contact us

Rockfish Arts Cooperative
We’re pleased to present the Rockfish Arts Cooperative, a program devoted to the development of arts classes at RVCC. These
classes are part of our ongoing mission to expand the cultural and educational programming available at our Community Center.
Ongoing: Life Drawing Sessions
Tuesdays, 6:30-9pm, in Room 12. Fee: $10/session. Minimum of 6 people required, age 18 & up. These Life Drawing
sessions provide a relaxed informal atmosphere and a wonderful way to improve your drawing skills. Figure drawing has
always been the traditional cornerstone of any art training. The human figure offers every challenge – line, shape, tone,
color, perspective and composition. This friendly group welcomes beginners, students & experienced artists to join them

Beginning May 5: Handbuilding with Clay for Homeschoolers with Michael Donegan

and glazes are provided. Just show up and be ready to play with mud! Create beautiful, glazed, food safe, functional ceramic pieces.
Coil, slip and pinch pot techniques will be used to create unique plates, dishes, cups and bowls. Students will also learn glazing and

May 6 & 13: Prismatic Painting Class with Alice Murphy
9:30am—12pm, in Room 12. Cost: $12/class suggested donation to RVCC. Creative prismatic painting on paper or canvas involves the process of designing your own compositions into a kaleidoscope effect and applying your own color schemes. Subject matter will be your choice of still life or landscape.
Degree of difficulty ranges from very simple to as complicated as you desire—all skill levels can create
original work. Alice Murphy has been teaching multi-media art classes since getting her degree in Fine
Arts and Fashion Illustration from RPI (now VCU). In addition to teaching, Alice has painted a large number of portraits in pencils, pastels, watercolors, acrylics and oils. Students may bring any of the above media and surfaces. Tables,

Classical Painting Workshop with nationally known artist Frank Covino
A viewing of Frank's instruction from one of his videos will be shown Wednesday, May 6, from 7-8:30pm, in Rockfish University.
One of his students will be present to answer questions, show their work and give detailed information about the workshop. Workshop dates: Oct 19-23, 9am-6:30pm. Learn to paint like a renaissance master with portrait artist Frank Covino. Over the course of
the week you will learn how to draw with accuracy using an ancient method, how to duplicate anyone's complexion, undertoning
with the Florentine Method of Verdacicio, and using azuraccio undertones in landscapes using the methods of the Hudson River
Valley school. By reproducing a masterpiece of the time, you will learn all these methods and more to create your own masterpiece.

Beginning Saturday, May 30: The Poetry of Place—An Experiential Workshop with Amelia Williams
Saturday 5/30, 9—11am; Monday 6/1, 6—8pm; Tuesday 6/2, 6—8pm. In Room 12. Fee: $60/series. How do we respond to the
particulars of place when we write? Is place the geography, the street map, the culture and customs, or the phrases and inflections
of a location? Participants will receive two short readings before the first class. The three sessions will provide a mix of activities
focused on the poetry of place, including walks along Mallory Creek, writing outdoors, guided discussion of the readings, in-class
journaling and writing with optional prompts, and a typical “reaction and feedback” workshop. All levels of experience welcome.

Fire in the Belly Dance Collective, for this 8 week course. In this fun filled class, you will learn fundamental movements using
proper posture and technique. Joy will teach isolations, foot patterns and traveling steps, and some simple layering techniques. You will learn movements that are both sinuous and serpentine, as well as crisp and percussive, as you use your muscles in ways not common in other forms of dance. the class out, the first one is free! Linda Hobson is a certified instructor for the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program. This program was designed by the Arthritis Foundation to relieve pain and stiffness caused by arthritis and many other conditions. The
