14th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"He was amazed at their lack of faith." The
citizens in Jesus' hometown just couldn't bring
themselves to believe in him. Even though they
"were astonished" when they beheld his wisdom
and learned about his mighty deeds, nonetheless,
"they took offense at him." What right did one of
their local boys have to run around claiming he
was a prophet? Prophets come from other places.
Prophets are sent by God. The son of the village
carpenter would never fit that bill.
So in spite of clear evidence to the contrary,
the established modes of thinking and the built-in
prejudices of the townspeople led them to conclude
that Jesus was not who he said he was. Because of
this stubborn hardness of heart, Jesus' "own kin"
missed out on the gifts that perfect strangers were
receiving: "He was not able to perform any mighty
deed there."
How often are we like these small-minded
villagers? How often do we stay trapped in the
regular routine of our daily existence and fail to
have the faith to believe that God is right here in
our own hearts and our own homes? As Christians,
we may know about the wisdom and power of
God, but we too often hesitate to acknowledge that
this same power can be at work here in our very
midst. Just as in Nazareth, our failure to believe
can prevent God from working the mighty deeds he
would otherwise perform in our lives. If we don't
give him the freedom of our faith, if we don't call
upon his Spirit to move us and lead us, then we are
closing ourselves off from the real miracle right in
front of us. Instead, let us open our hearts and our
minds to recognize the presence of God, not just in
other places, but right here, right now.

SACRAMENT OF ANOINTING OF THE SICK
You are encouraged to notify the rectory as soon as there is a serious
illness. You are also asked to notify the rectory when a relative is
admitted to a hospital or nursing home.
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
The Sacrament of Baptism for Infants normally takes place during a
weekend celebration of the Eucharist or on Sundays at 1:00 P.M. For
the baptism of their first child, parents are expected to attend a baptismal session with Fr. Lubomir. Please call the rectory office for an
appointment. Catholic godparents for infants must be at least 16
years of age, confirmed, and regularly practicing the faith with a freedom to receive the Eucharist.
CHRISTIAN INITIATION
Anyone interested in becoming a member of the Catholic Church
should contact a member of the parish staff.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE
Please call the Pastor nine months in advance to make arrangements
for instruction and planning the marriage ceremony.
FOOD PANTRY
The Sacred Heart Food Pantry is open on Wednesdays from 10:00
A.M. until 2:00 P.M.
PARISHIONER REGISTRATION
We are always happy to welcome new parishioners to Sacred Heart
Parish. Please introduce yourself to a member of the parish staff and
register at the rectory. Registration, the practice of stewardship,
and regular participation in the Eucharist indicate that a person is an
active member of the parish and is eligible to act as a godparent or
sponsor. As a Church community seeking to be faith-filled disciples
and good stewards, the sacrifice of our time, talent and treasure is
essential for the common good.

All current and former choir members are invited to sing at
the Noon Mass on July 12. Bishop Mark will be the Celebrant. We will have a practice on Monday, July 6 at 7:00
p.m. All music will be provided. Come join us as we begin
this year of celebration marking our 125th Anniversary.
125th Anniversary Mass Next Sunday
We will celebrate our parish’s 125th anniversary next
weekend with a Mass at 12:00 Noon. Bishop Mark Bartchak will be the Celebrant, Bishop Joseph Adamec, Fr.
Lubomir, Msgr. Carson and a large number of invited
priests will concelebrate. The Sacred Heart Festival Choir
will be singing.
The Family Dinner Celebration will be held at the Jaffa
Shrine following Mass. Admittance is by ticket only
which needed to be pre-purchased. We look forward to
seeing so many celebrating the anniversary of our Sacred
Heart Parish!

monuments honoring those who
sacrificed their lives in defense of
freedom, both at home and abroad.

the common good and a sense of responsibility towards
the less fortunate. It also demands the courage to engage
in civic life and to bring one’s deepest beliefs and values

Vocations Mass
The Diocesan Office of Vocations will be sponsoring a
Mass praying for an increase in Diocesan Priest Vocations within our Diocese. This Mass will be celebrated by
Bishop Mark Bartchak at Our Lady of the Alleghenies
Shrine in Loretto on Sunday, July 19 beginning at 7:00
p.m. Please bring your own lawn chair. In case of inclement weather this Mass will be celebrated inside the Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel in Loretto. All are welcomed and encouraged to attend!
Saint Joan of Arc Festival
St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church will be holding their Festival on Sunday, July 19th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. We are
featuring Turkey and Noodle Dinner with all the trimmings. Dinner served Family Style from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Adults $10, Children 5 to 12, $5. Music, games, bingo,
bake sale and lots more.

Liturgical Reflection…
In the celebration of the Mass, the faithful form a
holy people, a people of God’s own possession, so that
they may give thanks to God and offer the unblemished
sacrificial Victim not only by means of the hand of the
Priest but also together with him and so that they may
learn to offer their very selves. The people of God form
one body, whether in hearing the Word of God or taking
part in the prayers and in the singing, or above all by the
common offering of the Sacrifice and by participating
together at the Lord’s table. This unity is beautifully apparent from the gesture and bodily postures observed
together by the faithful throughout Mass.

Young Adult Retreat
Our Lady of Lourdes young adult group, “Spirit and
Truth” is hosting a retreat for young adults ages 18-40 at
the Sacred Heart Spirituality Center on Munster Road,
Portage. This will take place beginning on Friday, July
17th at 7 p.m. to Saturday, July 18th, ending in the evening. The theme of the retreat is Going Deeper. We have
many activities planned including prayer time, talks about
going deeper in our relationship with the Lord, praise and
worship adoration, social activities, quiet time and ending
with Mass. The cost is $30 per person. There is a limited
number of spots so registration is on first come/first serve
basis. For more information, call Our Lady of Lourdes
