OBJECTIVE:
The increased use of electrical and
electronic equipments and the high rate of
obsolescence of these equipment lead to
an increased generation of electrical and
electronic waste (e-waste), which has
become a major global concern in the last
couple of decades. E-Waste broadly
describes loosely discarded, surplus,
broken, obsolete, electrical and electronic
devices/equipment. E-Waste is an area of
immediate and long term concern for all
stake holders as its unregulated
accumulation and recycling can lead to
major environmental degradation which
will pose a major threat to human health.
Growing need to reduce toxins discharged
from unattended e-waste has triggered
more concern and adding to that the
average discard/replacement rates have
increased with a corresponding increase
in buying power. The environmental
hazards of the e-waste recycling are
mainly due to the unscientific incineration
and dangerous metal recovery processes
being practiced by the in-formal sector.
