To find out more, call 852-HOME (852-4663) or go online to www.edgewood-village.com Mary Helen Hasby’s views are understandable, given her line of business: Cookies For You, Inc., a cookie gift and bouquet company. Being around baking since before she was 5 years old, Hasby, owner of Cookies for You, felt it was only logical to open her own business featuring baked goods almost 15 years ago. Hasby grew up in New Town. She graduated from Minot High School and Minot State University with a double major in business administration and office management. Hasby then moved to Chicago for four years, but she realized she needed to raise her son in a safe environment like Minot. So, in 1992, Hasby opened Cookies For You in the Town & Country Shopping Center, and after a year and half, she moved to its present location at 117 S. Main St. in downtown Minot. Cookies For You started with one part-time baker and one part-time delivery person – Hasby’s father, Glenn Hasby. In fact, both of Mary Helen’s parents, Glenn and Lilah, have been delivering for her and helping her in the store since day one. Today, Hasby employs 12 full- and part-time employees, and the lights are on almost 24 hours a day between dough-making, baking the goodies and selling like mad. Hasby’s husband, Phil, who has been very supportive, is an Air Force Reservist and works full time at ING. Phil is the primary dough-maker along with four others – and everything is made from scratch. Hasby’s son, who is now a Navy SEAL, drew the smiley face and the Cookies For You logo when he was only 7 years old. Who knew what could come from a child’s imagination? Hasby feels while it takes a family to make a small business successful, she is also grateful to all of her employees (a.k.a Cookies For You Elves) who work tirelessly all year, but particularly during the month of December. Hasby describes them as being hardworking, energetic, customer-friendly and without their efforts, the business wouldn’t be successful. During the past 15 years, Cookies For You has grown. They now offer 16 flavors of cookies, plus cut-out decorated cookies; five flavors of bars, cookie pizzas, brownie pizzas, sweet trays, cookie tins, cookie boxes, cookie bouquets and many other gift items. Cookies For You also features a daily soup and sandwich lunch special and offers box lunch catering for business functions or events. They’ve also added a line of specialty coffees, mochas, lattes and cappuccinos. In 2000, Hasby franchised the business and trademarked it in all 50 states. A Cookies For You opened in Bismarck in January 2001 and another Cookies For You franchise was sold in Fargo in October 2007. The Cookies For You in Bismarck is located on 3rd Street S. by Applebees and Ground Round, and the Cookies For You in Fargo is located on 33rd Street SW behind Country Inn Suites and east of Cash Wise. Hasby said Cookies For You delivers locally and ships nationwide and internationally. They have been shipping to Iraq, Afghanistan and wherever United States troops are for years. The cookies arrive just fine, and the troops love receiving something they can eat “from home.” In preparing for the holidays, a majority of Cookies For You business is sweet trays, and they will be incorporating new catering options for the holidays. Sweet trays include cookies, homemade caramels and fudge, a variety of bars, cookie cups, peanut butter kiss cookies, cutout cookies and special delicacies. Cookies For You, along with several other retail stores downtown, will also be open until 8 p.m. on Dec. 6, 13 and 20 for your holiday shopping needs. With Cookies For You located in downtown Minot, Hasby loves being a part of the heart, heritage and history of the downtown community, which adds to the unique appeal of the Magic City. Hasby is grateful to her long-time customers for their support and appreciates the fact Minoters continue to buy locally. “I have been successful because of the continued patronage and loyalty that my local customers have shown me. The majority of our business is local, even though we have a presence on the Internet, the local market is still our bread and butter,” she said.
