SUMMER PACKET INSTRUCTIONS AND TOPICS LIST
Dear Upcoming AP or IB Chemistry Student,
It is expected you know these general chemistry topics before the beginning of the school year in
August. You will be tested on these topics on Friday, August 7 2015.
The topic assignments are web based so as to preserve the boxes of paper I will use to print all the
preparatory assignments you will complete over the summer. You are not required to work all the
worksheets or watch all the refresher lessons assigned, only to understand each topic fully and be able
to pass the entrance test. If you do not fully understand most of the topics required, you should
reconsider taking this class.
The lesson refresher videos can be found at www.gpb.org . Navigate to the chemistry and physics link at
the bottom of the home page then click on video and print materials. I recommend browsing the
reviews at the end of each topic (for example, Chemistry 104 contains a review of 101, 102, 103, and
104) before watching the videos. Each video contains several printable worksheets should you choose
to use them (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED). Ben’s Chem Videos YouTube channel is another excellent
resource. I also recommend going to http://www.doctortang.com/ and find his summer assignment
link. There you will find “Chemistry – a volatile history”. Watch all three episodes.
Finally, if you discover supplementary coaching is necessary, go to Google and search for “Topic” tutorial
(for example, “quantum numbers tutorial”). Many excellent resources are available, although I would
trust *.edu sites first. As a last resort, you may send a text or call me (423-571-8837). If you don’t hear
from me in a timely manner, try again as I travel in the summer and may have no service at the time of
your call.

7. Calculating molar mass, calculating percent composition, determining empirical and molecular
