News from the Band Room!
January was a busy month for LCHS band students, as activities picked right back up after Christmas!
On January 8-10th, Jazz student Jade Shivak attended the University of Saskatchewan High School Select
Jazz Weekend. Jade had the opportunity to learn from jazz professionals Dean McNeil and jazz pianist
Chad Linsley from Montreal, as well as playing with students from all over northern Saskatchewan. Congratulations Jade on representing LCHS during this weekend!
Jazz 10/20/30 students attended the University of Saskatchewan Department of Music Concert in North
Battleford on January 15th. The first half of the concert was the Department’s Collage Concert, in which
students performed selections one after another until the final applause at the end of the concert. The U of
S Jazz Ensemble performed in the second half of the concert.
Congratulations to the Garage Band 10 students for an excellent final performance on Wednesday, January
20th. Students in the class included Craig Baynton, Jaimen Bendixen, Niki Crockett, Mackenzie Hassall,
Hailey Kruchkowski, Brooklyn McCullough, Davyn Upshall, Brianna Scheuerman, Shanelle Wolgien, Zoe
Ouellet, and Danielle Benard.
After finals, three Band students participated in the University of Saskatchewan High School Select Weekend on January 29-31st. LCHS students participating included Alex McDonald, Sam Scribante, and Josh
Sandercock. The students rehearsed with their selected bands and conductors Dr. Darrin Oehlerking and
Dr. Glen Gillis, and performed a final concert on Sunday afternoon. Congratulations to these students for
their hard work and preparation for this weekend!
Upcoming Events:
 LCHS musical auditions (first week in February)
 Jazz Ensemble Trip to Calgary (March 1st and 2nd)
Senior Boys Basketball
The month of January saw the Sr. Boy's Basketball team return to action
after the Christmas break. The Barons travelled to Sherwood Park and
competed in the Bev Facey Falcon Invitational Tournament. The Boys
won their opening game over Archbishop Jordan from Sherwood Park
and then dropped a couple of close contests, losing to the host Falcons 85
-81 and then to the #1 ranked AAA Strathcona Christian 76-68. The losses snapped the Barons impressive season long 12 game win streak.
The Purple and Gold followed up the Facey Tournament with a home and
home set against the Vikings from North Battleford Comp. The two game
series saw both teams win on the home schools court. The Vikings won
the opener 81-69 at LCHS and then the Barons rebounded two nights later winning at NBCHS 76-44.
The Boys just wrapped up a solid week of practice and will now shut
down for a week to focus on semester I Final Exams.
The team returns to action
on January 29 & 30 when they
travel down the Yellowhead to
North Battleford to compete in
the Crusader Classic Tournament hosted by John Paul II
Collegiate.
