Dear Governor Brown:
I am writing to offer the full support of ScottsMiracle-Gro as you work toward mitigating the effects of
the unprecedented drought that has impacted California – and work towards the objective of a sustainable
future for your state.
We have watched the effects of this drought unfold with great concern and continue to give much thought
to the challenges of reducing water uses for the benefit of both current and future generations, in order to
best preserve the land itself, homes, and common areas that enrich the lives of so many. With hundreds
of employees and millions of consumers statewide we stand with the State of California in addressing
this crisis.
For nearly 150 years ScottsMiracle-Gro has been a trusted partner to help consumers maintain their
landscapes with products that are simple, sustainable and significant. We are prepared to assist you with
consumer education, the development of drought tolerant landscapes, and new technologies.
In Texas, we led a private-public education campaign that contributed to a ten percent reduction in
outdoor water usage by participants. Our associates have developed ground breaking products to address
water usage like moisture control soils, mulches that improve water infiltration and allow up to 30% less
water use than ordinary mulches, and grass seed varieties that require significantly less water.
In addition to providing solutions to consumers, we have worked with municipalities, including the City
of Los Angeles, to establish drought tolerant landscapes on public lands using our product solutions.
Through our GRO1000 program we have established more than fifty gardens and greenspaces in
Californian communities, with a portion of these projects focused on water efficient landscaping and
gardening. We have also partnered with the Association of California Water Agencies’ to support the
Save Our Water Campaign.
