ART GALLERY TOUR (Two Days)

We will be traveling around Seattle visiting different
art galleries. Students must have an interest in visual
art and be motivated to spend time in the space and
atmosphere of art galleries. We will travel on foot
and use public transportation.

BAKERY ARTS WORKSHOP (Two Days)
Meredith Hale and Rebecca Klein
In this Spring Days program, participants will be
learning cake decorating techniques and putting them
into practice by decorating cookies, cupcakes and cakes
based on each participant’s own designs. You will get to
take home the treats you make and keep your decorating
kit. This hands-on workshop is limited to 10 participants
and will be at Meredith’s nearby home in Capitol Hill.

BOARD GAME DESIGN (Two Days)

Want to race camels in the desert, build a kingdom, or create
a fireworks display with a technical team? You could do all
of these in an afternoon playing exhilarating, award-winning
board games. We will explore some of these great games,
then design our own. We need the help of story-tellers,
artists, sculptors, writers, inventors, and mathematicians.
Our journey is limited only by our own creativity.

BUILD AND PLAY: FOLK MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS
(Two Days)

We will build Ukulele’s and other folk instruments and
learn to play them. We will finish the project with a
performance.

CELEBRATE URBAN BIRDS (Two Days)

Get out your binoculars and field guides and join us for two days
of urban birding! Our celebration of urban birds will
begin at SAAS as we learn about our local backyard birds, a
bit of avian evolution, and practice bird ID skills; after lunch we
will head out into the field. Day two we will continue to hone our
bird ID skills at the Woodland Park Zoo as we discover which of
Seattle’s wild urban birds also enjoy visiting the zoo. WPZ
topics will include avian habitats, raptors, backyard wildlife
habitats, and conservation. We’ll be spending most of our two
days outside, so be prepared with sturdy walking shoes, layers,
and raingear.

CLIMBING / BOULDERING (Two Days)

The first day will be spent climbing at Seattle Bouldering
Project and the second day at Stone Gardens, with a day of
community service (recovery for tired arms) in between.

COMMUNITY SERVICE (Three Days)

We will do three separate community service projects in
the Seattle area. It should be enjoyable, worthwhile, and
fun. Service credit awarded for all three days.

DISC GOLF (Two Days)
David Johns and James Watson
No experience required except that you love the idea of throwing
discs at targets. There are several good disc golf courses around
the Puget Sound that we will try to visit. If you have done this
before, you should have a fun time improving your game. If you
have never done this, you may find a new activity you enjoy.

FOOD GLORIOUS FOOD (Two Days)

This spring day activity is for those who love to eat AND
work. We will take 8-10 students to Vashon, where we
will take over the kitchen at Vashon co-housing. Half the
group will cook an elegant 4-5 course lunch for the team.
The other half will spend a few hours working on an
organic farm. On day 2, the roles will be reversed and
we will make a completely different luncheon. The menu
will be devised by the group. The recipes will be
developed by Paul Shapiro. The entertainment by Mike
Cimino.

LEARN TO ROW (Two Days)
Lisa Feiertag and Sarah Smith
Sarah Smith, former National Team Rower, and Lisa Feiertag,
rockin’ Bassist and hairspray enthusiast, are teaming up to take
you out on the water! We will head down to Pocock Rowing
Center to learn the basics of rowing on the Ergometers, watch
video of some of the world’s best rowers, and get out on the water
in 8-person boats as well as in 1-person boats (if you dare!).
We will also play workout games, do circuits, and learn good
stretching techniques. No experience necessary, all levels of
rowers and non-rowers are welcome! Ready all, ROW!

MERCER MIDDLE SCHOOL SERVICE (Three Days)

SAAS has long supported students and programs and
Asa Mercer Middle School on Beacon Hill. Join us as we
spend three days with this school community helping out

graders. Get to know this community and help SAAS
deepen our relationship with Asa Mercer! Service credit

POMPEII (Two Days)

In the year 79, an entire Roman city was covered over in
hours by nature at its most violent. We’ll spend one day on
background, watching video, playing the game (yes, there’s a
game!), and learning about the people of Pompeii. The second
day will be a trip to the Pacific Science Center and the
traveling national exhibit. As the floors shake and the walls
rumble, we’ll relive the volcano’s catastrophic eruption through
an immersive CGI experience, culminating in the reveal of 10
full body casts of twisted human forms, asphyxiated by extreme
heat and noxious gases and forever frozen in time. Sounds
cool, right? You’ll lava it.

SAAS KITCHEN BRIGADE (Two Days)

Come help prepare and serve middle school lunch. You
will learn some basic culinary techniques as well as enjoy
the energy of the Jaffe room with our younger students.
After lunch, we will have a chance to make some quick
recipes that you can prepare for family and friends.

SCRAPBOOKING (Two Days)

Get ready to show your craft skills in this two day workshop!
Join us for two fun filled days of scrapbooking! We will
travel to Urban Scrapbooker in Edmonds, where we will have
scrapbooking experts assist us in making our own album. In
order to join this event, students must bring a minimum of 20
photos with them. Album, materials and scrapbooking tools
are provided. The scrapbook theme is “family and friends,” so
grab your favorite photo memories and enjoy a day of crafting
fun!

SELF-PORTRAIT WORKSHOP AND VISITING ARTIST
(Two Days)

Visiting artist Barbara Fugate is a well known local artist and
teacher who primarily focuses on working from life. She offers
an accessible and inspiring approach to self-portraiture.
Working from mirrors you will produce one finished
self-portrait along with several painting sketches. This
workshop will include issues of composition, balance and line
as well as a succinct way to approach color theory.

SHARING THE STAGE: POST-PRODUCTION
(Two Days)

Following the Sharing the Stage show on Sunday, March
22, there will be some good post-production work.
Sharing the Stage is a production that pairs student
performers with professional musicians. Students will be
editing video footage of all the acts from the show,
creating photo albums, updating the website, writing
a review, and more. Best if attended the show, but not
required.

Hours: URBAN FITNESS AND RELAXATION (Two Days)

Looking for a way to relieve some stress? Well we’ve got
the answer for you, Boxing and Yoga! Yes, that’s right!
Get all your stress out by punching a heavy bag or
maybe even sparring with a classmate. Then, you will
have some non-contact relaxation by participating in
some warm yoga. Imagine you are on the warm beaches
of Hawaii while moving through a flow of yoga poses in
80 degrees. We might even have time to explore one of
our local parks. Join us for some much needed urban
fitness and relaxation.

are on the Yearbook Committee.

ZAMBIA TRIP PREPARATION (Two Days)

M’uli bwanji! (Greetings!) This Spring Days program is
especially for those students who will be travelling on the
SAAS Zambia Trip this coming summer, but is also open
to students who have been to Zambia, are involved in the
SAAS Zambia program, or are interested in getting involved.This Spring Days program will include cooking a
traditional Zambian meal, learning a little N’yanja (the
African language spoken most commonly around the
capital city, Lusaka), watching some documentaries, and
other chances to learn more about Zambia and the region.
We will spend one of our days doing service projects
relating to the Zambia Trip and Program, including making
friendship gifts, creating colorful workbooks for Birdland
School students, and other projects.
