Art in Public
Whether it’s on the walls of our alleys, an unexpected street corner or along city
rooftops, encountering art in our streets causes us to see our surroundings in new
ways without ever having to set foot in a gallery. Government ordained, developer
sanctioned or on the fly and in the middle of night, art as it appears in public is a
powerful purveyor of dialogue. Art and design professionals speak to the presence of
public art in Seattle and the means from which Seattle’s story can be traced.
PERRI HOWARD
Perri Howard received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy
of Art in 2001. She works in a wide range of media from
painting, and drawing to sound installation and public art.
Her work investigates the relationship between human
perception and sense of place, relating to the “thereness” of
everything.
Public art projects include The Seattle Center Skatepark,
two solar-powered artworks for LEED-rated fire stations,
and Magnuson Park’s “Straight Shot” among other permanent and temporary works.
Honors include an Artist Trust Fellowship Award, 4Culture Special Project Grant,
residencies in Italy, Portugal, and Brazil, and to South India as a Fulbright Scholar.
ROBERT HUTCHISON
Robert Hutchison is a practitioner, researcher, and
educator whose interests and practice overlap the fields
of architecture, art and photography. Hutchison received
a MArch degree from the University of Washington in
1996, and a BS degrees in Structural Engineering and
Architectural Engineering from Drexel University in 1990.
From 1996 to 2001 Hutchison was a Project Architect and
Project Manager at The Miller/Hull Partnership, and from
2001 to 2013 he was a Partner in the Seattle-based architectural firm Hutchison &
Maul Architecture. In 2013, Hutchison established the architecture studio Robert
Hutchison Architecture. Honors and awards include the 2009 Emerging Voices by
the Architectural League of NY, the 2010 Creative Artists Fellowship by the JapanUS Friendship Commission & National Endowment for the Arts, and a 2008 AIA
Honor Award for Washington Architecture for the installation project ‘7’. Hutchison
served as a 2013-14 Ambassador for On The Boards, served two terms on King
County 4Culture’s Public Art Advisory Committee from 2008 to 2014, and is a
board member for the independent non-profit architectural organization Space.
City. Hutchison is an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Architecture
at the University of Washington, where he teaches architectural design studios.

Cultural Landscapes: Shaping the Story of Seattle
KATHLEEN WARREN
Kathleen Warren moved to Seattle from Atlanta 10 years
ago after completing her Bachelor of Arts in Art History.
For the last 6 years she has served as the Director of Urban
ArtWorks, an 20 year old non-profit that creates murals
with juvenile offenders. She believes that public art can not
only change young lives but they can restore communities
and define a city. Through her personal art installations and
her public art collaborations with muralists and youth, she
aspires to be an influential part of why Seattle’s street art
becomes integral to our landscape and identity.
JONATHAN FISCHER
Combining studies of traditional Japanese art with modern
process and content, my work seeks to address a postglobalized world as well as my own personal biracial history.
Using the aesthetic of ukiyo-e woodblock prints, I combine
anachronisms and layers of homage to explore cultural
dualities. In doing so, I feel like I am part of a centuriesold artistic discourse that has long addressed lineage,
obsolescence and appropriation.
ERIC FREDERICKSEN
Eric Fredericksen is a curator and writer living in Seattle.
He is the Art Program Manager for Waterfront Seattle,
the project to create 26 acres of new public space on the
Seattle central waterfront. He is also an adjunct lecturer at
the University of Washington School of Art + Art History
+ Design. He was the founding director of Western Bridge,
a collection exhibition space in Seattle, and an editor and
writer at Architecture magazine and The Stranger. He has
curated exhibitions at the Or Gallery, Artspeak, and the Contemporary Art Gallery,
Vancouver, Limoncello Gallery, London, and the Noorderzon Festival, Groningen, the
Netherlands. He has lectured at the University of Victoria, the University of Oregon,
the Sommerakademie in Bern, Switzerland, and the TBA Festival, Portland.

Cultural Landscapes:
Shaping the Story of Seattle
The story of a city can be taken as the
product of continuous change and a
convergence of seemingly disparate
sources. In tracing the story of Seattle, the
2015 Design in Depth lecture series aims
to explore Seattle from several vantage
points – its Architecture, Literature,
Music, Art, Film and Culinary Arts,
offering new insight into all the elements
that make our city unique. Each event
features speakers and professionals from
various fields and offers an investigation
of the ways in which architecture, culture
and the natural environment contribute to
an understanding of Seattle’s story.
