Title: The Replacement
Action: Vocal and performance artist Josef
Sprinzak (b. 1962, Israel, lives and works in
Tel Aviv) acts as an artist-curator performing
“a counter-curatorial vocal action.” Here
he invites four performers to collaborate in
developing vocal and textual works in the
Museum space. The artists employ a range of
artistic expressions—from performance art and
spoken word to theater and music, and tackle
the Museum’s role in generating artistic value
through vocal intervention. They respond to the
works of early Israeli art on view as milestones
in Zionist history, and to their own conscious and
physical presence in Tel Aviv. In the course of
the performance, original masterpieces will be
removed from the walls, making way for a new
upcoming display of art from the collection.

Title: 35 Minutes
Action: Los Torreznos are a performing duo
from Spain (Rafael Lamata, b. 1959, and Jaime
Vallaure, b. 1965; both live and work in Madrid).
In this work, a first performance ever held in
the Museum Library, they deal with presenting
the spoken word in a sphere of books, archive
and knowledge and enhance with their presence
the physical and metaphorical voice. The title
refers to the average length of performance,
during which they note the progress of time with
emphasized diction, slow or fast intonation, great
musicality and perfect coordination.

performance discussing art history and the
concept of “culture”—a succinct operation
combining criticism, humor and drama.

Gutman (b. 1971, Israel, lives and works in
Tel Aviv) presents a series of performances
involving text and movement, stretching a
vocal-geographical line between two libraries in
two very different parts of the city: the Garden
Library in Lewinsky Park, which serves the
migrant communities of south Tel Aviv, and
the Art Library at the Tel Aviv Museum of Art.
Performed in the hushed atmosphere of the
latter, shielded from outside disturbances, the
temporary ensemble examines the presence
and absence of voice and body, of knowledge
and accumulation, and creates a constellation
of voices and silences. The project employs the
museal context to render audible those voices
normally absent—culturally or socio-politically—
from Tel Aviv’s landscape.

Action: Marta Górnicka (b. 1975, Poland, lives and
works in Warsaw) is the director of the Chorus of
Women, Warsaw. Here, in her first commission
for a museal space, she has assembled a group
of some fifty participants. The musical score
was written for four areas in the Lightfall, for a
bilingual (Hebrew and Arabic) choir and one voice.
On the seam between theater and music, the
work deals with power/language relationships.
The choir whispers, shouts, speaks, murmurs and
turns verbal language into movement; its actions
challenge the conventional linguistic concepts of
“conflict,” “others” and “enemy.”

These live-performance, site-specific events
shed a unique light on the galleries of the Tel Aviv
Museum of Art and bring together the human
voice and the Museum’s various spaces. Viewers
are invited to move in a procession between three
locations in the Herta and Paul Amir Building:
the Lightfall, the Dina and Raphael Recanati
Family Foundation Galleries, housing the
Israeli art collections, and the Art Library in the
Memory of Meir Arison. The participating artists
manifest their voice in a range of contexts—
artistic, cultural and socio-political. The live
performances relate to the spaces in innovative
ways, in terms of vocal expression, the spoken
word, the spatial dimension and the movement
it enables, as well as the art on display. The
Museum’s architecture is deconstructed and
qualified, and its symbolic functions as a central
cultural space are explored.
