INTRODUCTION
This book is a culmination of 25 years of study and
a promise to bring people a framework if you will; to allow
some one to be able to, with limited time and study to fulfill the Mitzvoth set down via Moshe Aveinu (Moses) from
HaShem. The following pages will cover all that is required by Masoretic text (Hebrew Scriptures) and some
tradition (Mishnah). Please see both the Special Notes/
Editor’s notes; and Appendix sections found in the front
and back, of this volume, respectively. These are resources for you to be able to orient yourself toward practice.
I would like to leave you with a statement my Grandmother gave me when I was a young boy of 10 years old. I
would ask her every Shabbos, and Yom Tov “Oma, why do
you not go to shul with us?” Her response after 83 years
of running from Pogroms, The Holocaust and finally raising 2 generations of children and grandchildren was this:
“Yonni, Mein Gott is auf dem Tish” ( John, My G-D is at/
on the Table). What I learned from that statement is that
we practice best and most true, when we do it not in the
Synagogue or Temple, but at our home and in the real
world. That is where true practice lies; within our children and our neighbors.

Editor’s (Special) Notes
I have made some decisions as far as method and text are
concerned. For the most part, the entire siddur is Torah
based. Meaning that there are no Talmudic additions
with the communal prayer (Shacharit, Mincha, and, Bedtime Shema). I have, however added traditional aspects
where I deemed necessary. The purpose of these additions are to give “Landmarks” to the group; in the case of
a Minyan (group of ten or more), it gives a sense of cohesion and inclusion during prayer. The other place I have
added “Talmudic Landmarks” are in the Mi Sheberakh
(prayer for the sick) and Kaddish (Mourner’s Prayer).
The reason for the above additions is because they allow a
community to pray, during a time of sickness and mourning. Other than those additions, I have tried to keep this
Prayer-book (Siddur) Hebrew Scripture based.
I have also made some decisions as far as the format of this Siddur is concerned. First, I have decided to
not have a “Ma’arv” service. This is due to the fact that
the Rabbis’ argued whether to have one since there were
no sacrifices at night (Taanit 2a). So, I have instead just
placed the “Bedtime Shema” as the last prayer of the day
since it does say “…...when you lie down and when you rise
up……..” (Deuteronomy 6:7) within the Shema itself.

I have made this book for the weekday service only, because it is the time when most of us are working and are
not with in a community to observe the Mitzvoth. I hope
that you consider that on Shabbat, you find a community
to fellowship in and have time as a member of a congregation to enjoy the splendor of a Shabbat morning service. It
can not be duplicated anywhere except within a community. Please consider becoming a member if you have not yet
joined one.
I have removed the 18 benedictions (Shemoneh Esre)
of the Amidah. This is because in the early 1st Century of
the Common Era (CE); the early siddurim were very
basic, with only the Shema and Tehillim (Psalms) with in
them. Since I wanted to give the Congregant a feeling of
obeying the Mitzvoth (Commandments), and leave the
meditative aspects to the individual; I have omitted them.
This is also so that the person that is intimidated by the
present siddurim; can feel confident that they are fulfilling the requirements of the commandments given by G
-D, through Moshe Aveinu (Moses, our father/teacher). If
at a later date one wants to continue in the Rabbinical
practice of the Shemoneh Esre, one is encouraged to do
so. My total intention is to get people to pray and praise
HaShem; that is my only intention.

PRAYER UPON PLACING YOUR TALLIT AND
YOU KATAN/KATTAN.
When you have risen for the morning prayer it is customary to don your tallit or at least place a “Kattan/Katan”
with your tzitzits on the four corners of clothing; as per
the commandment found in Numbers 15:37-41.
This is the blessing for donning your Tallit (see appendix)

BLESSING UPON LAYING TEFILLIN
(PHYLACTERIES)
This is the blessing for placing Tefillin upon you
head and arm as required the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:8,
and 11:18), so the requirement is one of the few that are
repeated twice in the Torah. So, it is a double blessing to
perform this Mitzvah.
Please note: Tradition teaches that once you do the blessing you are not allowed to speak until both the Head and
Arm Tefillin are bound to you. If you do speak, you are required to do the blessing again upon place the second Tefillin (most likely the Head Tefillin, since it goes on second). For proper placement of the Tefillin see Appendix)
Baruch Atta Ado-nay, Elo-hainu Melech Ha'olam, Ashair Kidishanu,
B'mitzvotav, V'tzivanu L'haniach Tefillin.
Blessed are You, L-rd our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying...
Dabeir el b'nei Yis'ra'eil v'amar'ta aleihem
Speak to the children of Israel and say to them
v'asu lahem tzitzit al kan'fei vig'deihem l'dorotam
v'nat'nu al tzitzit hakanaf p'til t'kheilet
they should make themselves tzitzit (fringes) on the corners of their clothing
throughout their generations,
and give the tzitzit of each corner a thread of blue.

And they shall be tzitzit for you, and when you look at them you will remember all

In order to remember and do all My commandments, and be holy for your God.

May it be the will before You, Hashem, our G-d, and the G-d of our forefathers, Who chose
David His servant and his offspring after him, and Who chose songs and praises - that you
attend with mercy to the recitation of psalms that I shall merit and consider it as if they
were recited by King David, of blessed memory, himself, may his merit be a shield over us.
And stand in our favor may the merit of the verses of the psalms together with the merit
of their words and their letters and their vowels and their cantilations, and together with
the Holy Names that are formed from them, from the initial (letters) of the words and from
the final (letters) of the words - may their merit serve to bring atonement for our transgressions, iniquities, and sins, and to cut down ruthless men, and slash away all the thorns
and briars which surround the Rose, Celestial; and to unite the Bride of Youth with her
Beloved in love, brotherhood, and companionship. And from that (unification) may be
drawn to us an abundant blessing to our spirit, breath and soul, to purify us of our iniquities, to forgive our sins and to atone for our transgressions, just as You forgave David who
recited these very same psalms before You - as it is said: Hashem also has forgiven your
sin, you shall not die. May you not take us from This World before our time, until the completion of our years, (among them are seventy years,) in a manner that we be able to rectify anything that we have ruined. May the merit of King David, of blessed memory, shield
over us and for us; that You may be patient (with us), (and wait) until we return to You in
repentance that is complete before You. From your treasury of grace that is undeserved,
be gracious to us - as it is written: I am Compassionate to those whom I favor, and I am
Merciful to those upon whom I have mercy. And just as we recite before You a song in This

World to Come. And through the recitation of the psalms arouse the Rose of Sharon to

The Purpose and Benefit of this Booklet
The purpose of this booklet is to allow a person who never celebrated
Shabbat, to do so with relative ease. There are many different traditions in different households and sects of Judaism. This is just a basic format that most Hebrew homes use to observe Shabbat Evening or “Eruv Shabbat” as it is called in
Hebrew and Yiddish. You can add your own “traditions” as time goes on, but for
now; this is just a foundation to start within your early practice.
Getting Started
First, you will need some basic items to have you Eruv Shabbat service. These
are the items you will need; after you get them we will explain their purpose and
use. The Items you will need are as follow:
Two 2-5 hour candles and candle holders.
Two loaves of bread.
A bread board.
Bottle of sweet wine or grape juice.
A glass cup for the wine.
This book!
Now, place the two candles, in their holders in side by side and place the bread
board with the loaves upon it. At this point you can also cover the two loaves
with a clean cloth. It should look like the picture below:

Getting “Unplugged” before the Shabbat.
Now, as do many families, it is a good Idea to “unplug” for at least the night (the
whole day would be best). This is done by literally unplugging your TV, Game boxes, Computers and other electronic “distractions” you usually use doing the
week. This is a time to focus on the family and to be with one another. To also,
thank the Creator for all the work you’ve done and to really REST! You should do
this before you light the candles; which is done 18 minutes before sundown. You
can check that by going on Chabad.org and search “candle lighting times” on
their site.

Lighting the Candles and the Blessings:
Now that you have gotten all the elements for Shabbat, Unplugged you TV, Gaming devices, etc; it is time to light the candles! It is a Tradition that the Woman of
the house lights the Candles on Shabbat evening. If there are no women in the
house, or you are doing this alone; a man can light the Candles.
The person lighting the candles lights them from right to left, and after they are
lit, the blessing is recited:
“Baruch Atah Adonai, Elohenu, Melech Olam, Asher Kishanu, B’Mitzvot tov, Vitzianu, B’Mitzvot, La-Hadik Ner Shel Shabbat”
“Blessed are you L-rd, Our G-D, King of the Universe that has instructed us to do
the Commandment of Lighting the Sabbath Candles”
Now that that is done, Traditionally the Man of the House (or oldest male),
Takes the cup of wine, Raises it in his right hand and says this blessing:
“Baruch Atah Adonai, Elohenu, Melech Olam, Booray Puree, Hagafen”
“Blessed are You L-rd, G-D, King of the Universe, Who gives (us) the Fruit of the
Vine”.

And now the person who said the blessing drinks the wine/grape juice first, then
shares it will the others with him/her, as a gesture of “Sharing the blessing”.
Now, take the two loaves in your hands (or you can have one loaf or two smaller
rolls if there is only a few of you).
Now, lift the one loaf in your right hand and say:
“Baruch Atah Adonai, Elehenu, Melech Olam, Ha-Motzie, Lekhim Ha-Aretz”
Blessed are you L-rd, Our G-D, King of the Universe, that bring forth Bread(grain)
from the Earth”
Now, lift up the loaf in your left hand and say”
“Baruch Atah Adonai, Elehenu, Melech Olam, Ha-Motzie, Lekhim HaShemieem”
“Blessed are you L-rD, Our G-D, King of the Universe, that brings forth Bread
(grain) from The Heavens”
The second blessing is to remind us that when the Hebrews were in the Wilderness, HaShem (G-D) gave supplied us a double portion of bread from Heaven
(Manna). That is why we say this because it is G-d that sustains us during our
Sabbath Rest

Now after saying the two blessings, brake off a piece of bread (Tradition teaches
that you break off piece of the Right loaf, and save the “Heaven Loaf” for Saturday morning’s meal), Eat the piece and then share pieces with the others with
you.
Blessing of the Children and Pets
The blessing for the Male children (Place your both hands on His/Their heads)
and say:
“Ye-sim-khah, Eloheem, ke-efry-im, ve-khim-nahsheh”
“My G-D Make you like Ephraim and Menasheh”
For the Female children (both hand on the top of her/their heads) and say:
“Ye-sim-khah, Eloheem, keh-sarah, riv-kah, rah-khel, ve-lay-ah”
“May G-D make you like Sarah, Rivkah (Rebecca), Rachel and Leah”
Then, you gather all the children both Male and Female and finish the blessing
by saying this:
“Ye-var-rekhah, Adonai, ve-yeesh-meh-rekhah, yah-her, Adonai, pah-nahv, eh-lehkhah, vee-khoo-nekah, ye-sah, Adonai, pah-nahv, eh-lekhah, ve-yah-sehm lehkhah, Shalom”
“May the L-rd bless you and keep you, May the L-rd’s Presence shine upon you
and be kind to you, May the L-rd
turn His Face toward you, and bring you Peace”.
And All say “Amein”!

The blessing of the Pets:
Now, in some homes families bless their pets as well. If you do have a pet (Cat,
Dog, etc), you can place your hand on the top of their head and say:
For Dogs:
“May G-d make you like Caleb, the loyal one.”
For Cats:
“May G-d make you like the lion of Judah, the strong one.”
For Goats and other barnyard family members (these you can do in front of the
barnyard, coop, etc, without touching them):
“May G-d make you like the goats of Jacob, the prosperous ones,”
Once the blessings are done:
Now, sit down and eat your Shabbat Dinner!

Grace After the meal (Birkat Hamazon, or
“Benching”):
The reason why we do grace after the meal instead of before is because of a scriptural reference found in Deuteronomy 8:10.
The commandment states “That you will eat and
be satisfied”, so then we take G-D for the meal
that was given. This is also a lesson that it is easier to thank G-D when you are hungry then when
you are full, so it is when we have everything we
forget who and how we have this bounty; and it
can be easily taken away if we disobey
(Deuteronomy 11).

entries; as a pointer that this is a “Jewish Car”. Use your best judgment on this
issue. There are many other “Hebraic Jewelry” that can define your Torah Observance and you can get those items at your local Judaica Store or online.
