Success for every student
Edmonton Public Schools is the second-largest school district in Alberta, serving the unique
strengths, needs and interests of over 89,000 students through regular community school
programming and more than 30 alternative programs.
Welcome
Transportation
We believe education is the foundation for success
and school is more than just a place with desks and
teachers. School is where discovery is encouraged,
curiosity is awakened and personal growth is
nurtured. It’s a place where your child will start his
or her day feeling confident and excited to learn.
Edmonton Transit System (ETS) is the preferred means
of student transportation. For information about ETS
schedules, phone 311 or visit takeETS.com.
An open door policy
Open boundaries support one of our District’s core
philosophies: parents and students should have the
freedom to choose their preferred school.
Every neighbourhood in Edmonton has a designated
public school. A designated school is a student’s
guaranteed point of entry. Students are also able
to attend any other school in the District, as long
as the school has room and offers the right type
of programming and the student meets any
entrance requirements.
Quality education for all
Curriculum in all schools is determined by Alberta
Education’s provincial programs of study. These identify
what students are expected to learn and do in all
grades and subjects. Regardless of which school and
programming you choose, your child will have access
to the same high-quality education at all district schools.
Important registration dates
• Monday, February 23, 2015
Deadline for parents to submit applications
to schools with entrance criteria (Crestwood,
Grandview Heights, Old Scona and Victoria)
• Wednesday, April 15, 2015
Pre-enrolment deadline for all district schools (K–12)
For more information, contact the principal
at your child’s school.
2
Regular
Edmonton Public Schools provides yellow bus service to
elementary students attending their primary designated
school if they live:
• In a rural area
• In a neighbourhood without a community school
• Where ETS service is not available or adequate
In neighbourhoods with a primary and secondary
attendance area, yellow bus service will only support
elementary students attending their primary
designated school.
Kindergarten
Some Kindergarten noon (AM or PM) busing is available
based on resources and demand for services. Generally,
Kindergarten noon busing is provided in neighbourhoods
without a community school.
Alternative
Yellow bus service may also be available for elementary
students attending a school offering an alternative program.
Contact the school for information about eligibility.
Special education
Busing is provided to students with physical, mental
or other disabilities who require a high level of care
and attention, who are unable to walk to school or
use regular yellow bus routes, and who are attending
their designated school.
For more information on transportation eligibility, bus
passes, fees and routes, please contact your designated
school or Student Transportation at 780-429-8585
or go to epsb.ca/schools/gettoschool.
How to register
For new students or
students changing schools
For returning students
If you are enrolling your child with Edmonton Public
Schools for the first time, here is some helpful
information to review.
Parents of students currently enrolled at Edmonton
Public Schools can use their SchoolZone parent account
to pre-enrol between March 23 and April 15, 2015.
Find your designated school
Need help?
Search for your school using our Find a School Tool
on epsb.ca or call our Planning department at
780-429-8427.
If connecting through SchoolZone is a challenge,
or you have questions, talk to the principal at your
child’s current school.
Kindergarten
Random selection at schools with
limited space
Children who are four years of age or older on or
before March 1, 2015, may register in Kindergarten
for the 2015–16 school year. Please contact the
school to find out about registration, open houses
and Kindergarten orientation.
Register
Visit epsb.ca to review the required forms of
identification, download the registration form and
bring your completed form to the school in which
you wish to register.
Pre-enrol on SchoolZone in 2015
If the number of students who want to attend a school
or program exceeds the available space, applicants
from outside the school’s designated attendance area
are chosen by a random selection process.
• Random selections will be completed, and students
notified, by the end of April.
• Students not selected for their preferred choice are
always able to attend their designated school or any
other school with available space.
• High school course selections are confirmed only
after the random selection process.
Learn more about random selection and schools
with enrolment limits at epsb.ca/schools/register/
randomselection.
Find a School Tool
Every neighbourhood in Edmonton has designated public schools.
Although schools have not yet been built in some newer areas of the
city, these neighbourhoods still have designated schools in an adjacent
or nearby neighbourhood. Go to epsb.ca to use our Find a School Tool.

Choosing a school
At Edmonton Public Schools, it’s all about choice. The programs we offer are based on the
common goal of providing all students with a high-quality education. We believe that, as a
parent, you should be able to choose the school that offers the approach and programming
that will help your child thrive and achieve.
What choices can I make?
Each school offers one or more of the following:
Regular program
Even though most of our schools offer a regular
program, no two are quite the same. While the
curriculum at all schools is determined by Alberta
Education, a school’s instructional focus, optional
courses and activities will vary depending on how
the school is organized to meet student needs.
Alternative program
There are more than 30 alternative programs available
at select schools throughout the District. Students
enrolled in an alternative program will also receive
instruction determined by Alberta Education, with
a focus on a specific type of arts, athletics, language,
faith, culture or teaching philosophy.
Special education program
Special education programs are available at select
district schools. Students enrolled in a special
education program will also receive instruction
determined by Alberta Education, along with
specialized supports based on their needs
and abilities.
4
Finding the right fit
Choosing a school is an exciting and important part
of shaping your child’s education. With over 200
schools and more than 30 alternative programs to
choose from, how do you determine which school
is right for your child?
Choosing a school is different for every family. Your
considerations might include the school atmosphere,
distance to your home or work, before- and afterschool programs, a specific academic focus or other
factors. There is no wrong choice—regardless of which
school or program you choose, your child will have
access to the same high-quality education at all of
our schools.
To help you find the right fit for your child, consider
the following:
Determine your priorities
Understanding your child’s strengths and interests
while balancing practical concerns like location,
transportation and child care is an important part of
determining which school will work best for your child.
Making a list of priorities can help you keep sight of
what’s important to you and your child. Ultimately,
the school you choose should be one where your
child feels happy, confident and excited to learn.
Take note of important dates
Most schools host open houses between February
and April. Consider starting your search before
school open house dates so you have plenty
of time to determine your priorities and research
your options. The deadline to register for schools
with entrance criteria is February 23, 2015, and
the deadline to register for all district schools
is April 15, 2015.
Attend an open house
Open houses are informal events that give you a
glimpse into what your child’s school day would
look like, a feel for the school atmosphere and
an opportunity to learn more about the school’s
educational philosophy and culture. It’s a great
way to meet the people who will teach and
support your child at school every day.
Search for open house dates and
times at openhouse.epsb.ca.
Research your options
There are several ways you can gather more
information about your preferred schools. Most
schools have websites, Facebook® or Twitter® accounts,
provide brochures and host open houses. Parents are
also welcome to schedule an appointment to visit the
school to talk to the principal or school staff and tour
the school.
To search for school contact information, visit epsb.ca
and use our Find a School Tool.

Welcoming our youngest learners
The early years are an important time in children’s lives. They are growing up and discovering
the world around them. Creating positive learning experiences during the early years can help
them become lifelong learners and set the stage for future success.
Edmonton Public Schools provides children with inclusive, play-based environments rich in
language and literacy that enhance learning and support successful transitions throughout
the early years and beyond.
What programming options are available?
Early Years offers three programming options to support
children with varying needs.
Early Education
Kindergarten
This program supports children aged 2 years, 8 months
to 4 ½ years who have mild/moderate and severe
disabilities. Programming focuses on cognitive, selfhelp and social skills, speech and language, and
motor development. Parents and staff work together
to support each child.
Children who are four years of age on or before
March 1, 2015 may register in Kindergarten for the
2015–16 school year. Children may attend their
designated school or apply to a school or program of
choice. Kindergarten is offered half-day in the mornings
or afternoons at most elementary schools. Full-day
Kindergarten is offered at some elementary schools.
Early Learning
This program supports children 3½ to 4½ years of
age who are English Language Learners or in need
of specialized supports and services. Programming
focuses on developing communication and co-operative
learning skills, and is available to children
attending their designated school.

Healthy connections Immunization
Edmonton Public Schools works
with many service providers to
deliver health services and programs
to schools. Alberta Health Services
provides information and assistance
to families and schools on healthrelated issues for students.
For health advice and information
24 hours a day, seven days a
week, call Health Link Alberta
at 780-408-LINK (5465).
For health information, visit
myhealth.alberta.ca.
Communicable diseases spread more
easily when children are together in
a group. Many of these diseases can
be prevented through immunization
with specific vaccines. Children
get the best protection when
immunizations are given on time.
The preschool booster is due when
a child is between four and six years
of age, but preferably before starting
Kindergarten. If you need a copy of
your child’s immunization record,
please contact Health Link Alberta at
780-408-LINK (5465) or your nearest

Partners in education
Everyone has a role to play in supporting the success of students. We believe the
best approach involves working with a variety of people and groups who share
a commitment to teaching and learning.
Families as partners
School councils
Success at school begins at home. By encouraging
and supporting your child, you show that you place
a high priority on his or her learning, social behaviour,
participation and progress at school.
School councils are associations of parents, teachers,
secondary students, principals, staff and community
representatives who work together to effectively
support and enhance student learning.
You and your family can support children by:
Involvement on these councils includes:
• Staying in touch with your child’s teacher
• Focusing on educational matters
• Understanding what your child learns at school
• Providing input on topics such as program planning,
school budgets and school operations
• Attending special events
• Reading together
• Knowing school rules, program expectations,
discipline policies and grading practices
• Locating resources such as speakers and volunteers
• Reading newsletters and teachers’ notes
• Gathering information and sharing experiences
• Participating in parent-student-teacher conferences
• Supporting the goals and objectives of the school
• Talking with your child about school, interests
and friends
• Encouraging, supporting and modelling positive
attitudes about education
•Volunteering
• Joining a school council

• Serving as a liaison between parents, the school
and community groups
Community as partners
We feel it’s vital to connect with the community—
organizations, government agencies, post-secondary
institutions, businesses, service groups and the public
at large—in order to provide students with a range
of enhanced learning experiences.
The Edmonton Public Schools
Foundation taps into the hearts and
minds of the wider community,
spreading the word about the
importance of public education
and encouraging people to support
Edmonton’s most socially vulnerable
young citizens.
Community partners can get involved by:
• Attending public board meetings
• Understanding board policies and reading board
minutes
• Participating in public consultations, opinion polls
and surveys
• Contacting the administration and Trustees with
ideas and concerns
• Keeping up to date on local issues such as elections,
government policies and teacher bargaining
• Volunteering for school activities and programs
• Respecting our guidelines for solicitation of schools
• Sharing information about your non-profit
organization
The Foundation raises friends and funds to
support student success. Currently, all efforts
focus on subsidizing the cost of full-day
Kindergarten programs, which are not fully
funded by the provincial government.
The community plays a very important role in
getting students ready for learning, ready for
success and ready for life.
Here are some ways you can get involved:
• Attend a one-hour information session
hosted at a school.
• Learning the best way to do business with the District
• Come to our annual Ready for Life
fundraising breakfast.
• Doing research with the District
• Make a financial or in-kind contribution.
• Considering a District- or school-level educational
partnership arrangement
• Participate in your own unique way!

As a parent, you have a choice in your child’s learning environment.
Your child can enrol in:
• His or her designated school, which is the first option considered
and discussed with parents
• A district centre special education program at select schools for
students who require specialized supports and services, and who
meet established criteria
• An alternative program at select schools, if students meet established
criteria and if room is available
Program support
Special education programming supports students through:
• Assessment, consultation or other services provided by specialists
•An Individualized Program Plan that outlines goals and objectives,
guides programming, and monitors and communicates student growth
Behaviour and Learning
Assistance programming assists
students with chronic, extreme,
pervasive anti-social behaviours.
Programming helps students
to achieve academically and to
develop and apply acceptable
behaviour and social skills in the
classroom, school and community.
Challenge programming supports
students identified as high-ability
learners with special education
needs. Students are grouped
together for enriched, challenging
and well-paced programming
specifically designed to meet their
learning needs. This program
is available for elementary
and junior high students who

excellent achievement.
Community Learning Skills
programming supports students
with moderate cognitive disabilities
and significant developmental
delays. Programming focuses on
assisting students to learn and use
essential academic, communication
and personal skills in the classroom,
school and community. Some
schools also offer Community
Learning Skills and Behaviour and
Learning Assistance programming,
which assists students with
moderate cognitive disabilities and
extreme behavioural difficulties.
14

to profound hearing loss. These
include a bilingual/bicultural
learning environment using
American Sign Language (ASL),
total communication programming and other community
school supports.
Extensions programming is
designed for elementary and junior
high students who have extremely
high intellectual ability and a
primary need for gifted educational
programming. Students are
encouraged to achieve academically,
extending beyond curriculum in
areas of strength, and to learn about
and apply positive coping strategies
in areas of challenge.
Individual Support programming

cognitive and developmental delays
who may also experience physical,
sensory, behavioural or medical
challenges. Students participate
in programming to gain functional
skills that enhance their quality
of life.
Interactions programming is
designed to meet the special
needs of students with autism
spectrum disorder. This program
supports students in the areas of
social relationships, behaviour and
communication. Programming is
based on individual needs and

Centre High Campus offers:
• High school completion
• Academic upgrading
• Post-secondary partnerships
• Career preparation
Learning Stores programming
supports students who are 16 to 19
years old, as well as 15-year-olds
who have previously attended high
school. If students are short a few
credits, are upgrading their marks or
need to repeat a course, Learning
Stores can help.
LearnWrite (Outreach) / LearnNet
(Argyll) serves high school students
who seek flexibility in completing
their courses. Through strong
student-teacher connections, this
program engages students in the
learning process, helping them fulfil
their learning potential and reach
their educational goals.
Metro Continuing Education
provides courses for high school
credit, diploma exam and provincial
achievement test preparation,
review of elementary and junior high
curriculum, tutorials and English as a
Second Language.
New Directions provides academic
programming for expelled junior
and senior high students who are
non-violent and have a history of
difficulties at school. Placement
is determined through the
expulsion process.
Pregnant and parenting
teens
English Language Learning
(ELL)
Braemar School is open to
pregnant and parenting students
under the age of 20. It offers all
courses required for a high school
diploma and provides on-site
assistance to access financial
support. Other agencies provide
medical services, legal information
and peer support programs.
A partnership with the Terra Centre
provides inclusive family and child
care services, counselling and
a clothing exchange program.
ESL Reception Centres
The English as a Second Language
(ESL) Reception Centres provide
students and families who are new
to Canada with information about
the public school system and English
language assessment.

Ward maps and
school listings
The Edmonton Public School Board’s nine Trustees were elected to determine the overall direction
for the District and to represent the interests of their constituents. Every four years, the Board works
with stakeholders to develop a set of priorities to guide their work during their elected term.
These priorities also serve as a guide for district staff as they deliver the best possible education
to each student. Visit epsb.ca to learn more about the priorities.
Your views on public education are important to
the Board, and they welcome your questions and
comments. You can use the maps on the following
pages to determine your ward and learn how to
contact your Trustee.
