As we finish out our 40th year we continue to examine how to best serve those in our care. Like
most non-profit organizations, funding necessary programs continues to be a challenge. We are

Our Mission is to empower individuals with disabilities by providing support and services that
maximize their independence.
Our vision is that all people who live with disabilities have the confidence, dignity, and skills needed
to lead lives of independence and quality.
Peter Davis Receives 2012 Sandy Garrity Award
Peter Davis’ twenty five
year career with St.
Joseph Hospital was built
on the rock solid foundation that “as long as the
employees and patients
are O.K., the rest will take
care of itself.”
As President & CEO of
St. Joseph Hospital, it was
this philosophy that endeared
him to patients, employees, and the entire Greater
Nashua community.
Peter was a strong supporter of the joint Gateways
and PLUS mission to work on behalf of children
and adults with developmental disabilities, individuals with autism, and seniors in need of care.
From the early days of Gateways and PLUS
Company he supported our efforts by providing
sound counsel and instilling the guiding principle
that a Senior Executive from St. Joseph Hospital
serve on Gateways’ Board of Directors.
Whatever assistance was asked of St. Joseph, Peter
was always at the ready and came through as a
champion for vulnerable populations. He stayed by
our side offering assistance with administrative
support, as well as providing us with his leadership
on a variety of health and medical related issues.
Peter knew that “healthy” was just the tip of the
iceberg when it came to living a happy, meaningful
life. He readily acknowledged that people needed
to be vital parts of their community to feel a sense
of self-worth. Peter’s commitment resonated
through our community and both companies.
In 2008, Peter, always the entrepreneur, supported
a sector-based training model called Project
Search© which is designed to train people with
developmental disabilities to successfully work in
hospitals. St. Joseph Hospital’s Project Search©
was the first in New Hampshire and in all of New
England. It is a model program that is now replicated in five other hospitals throughout New
Hampshire. Without Peter, Project Search© would
not be in New Hampshire today. This is just one
example of the wonderful legacy he has left our
community and our state.
Peter retired from St. Joseph on July 31, 2010. He
was an avid golfer and planned to spend time in
Florida during his retirement. His retirement was
also a time for him to fight the hardest battle he
would ever fight; battling cancer.
On March 28, 2011, St. Joseph Hospital lost a great
friend and caregiver. Peter sadly passed away from
complications with cancer. He is remembered for
being a man who truly cared for the people. He was
an unselfish person and made sure that everyone
around him was happy. Most importantly for those
supported by the developmental services system he
was a man of insight, vision, and commitment.
As Gateways and PLUS celebrate “Lean on Me,”
we also celebrate how those we serve have “leaned”
on Peter Davis and were caringly supported.

A Letter from the Chair and Executive Director
Anniversaries are always a time for reflection – an
opportunity to be introspective and even selfcongratulatory. For those of us at The PLUS Company,
this year has been a bit less about celebration, and a
great deal about introspection. Have we met the
mission of those early families? Are those we serve
treated with respect and guided to be as independent as
they can possibly be? What areas can we grow to best
serve our clients, our community, and our families?
While we certainly have much to celebrate as an
organization, we instead focus on the people and
programs that are what make The PLUS Company so
special. We have shared with the community stories and anecdotes of success. Today the vocational focus
of The PLUS Company has shifted from sheltered workshops to inclusive opportunities in the community.
Training takes place in classrooms at local high schools, colleges, offices, hospitals, and businesses. Group
homes are giving way to individually supported home environments which maximize the strength of
living in a family unit. Adult education continues to focus on skills and recreational opportunities to
improve the independence and quality of life for participants. In short, our 40th has allowed us to embrace
how far we have come, and not just have a big party.
Forty years ago, concerned families of individuals with developmental disabilities gathered in Nashua to
discuss the futures of their loved ones. From these discussions, the PLUS Company was born. Today, the
work of the PLUS Company continues to evolve. Innovation and possibilities underscore our daily
mission. The agency has grown in the number and types of programs we provide as well as now serving
many towns in Massachusetts. Now, we have a responsibility to continue its growth, potential and
promise. We believe that those pioneers would be pleased and possibly somewhat surprised at the progress
this organization has made in these forty years. We also believe our legacy will include the further
expansion of quality services into Northern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. It is our hope
that someday, perhaps in forty years, the new caretakers of this wonderful organization will review the past
and feel "we did our job well".

Working Together to Make Lifelong Change
The expectations and opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities and traumatic
brain injuries have changed tremendously in the last forty years, as have the outcomes and accomplishments. Utilizing innovate approaches, The PLUS Company continues to create dramatic
improvements in the lives of the people served.
Thanks to dedicated staff, Board members committed to excellence, and caring families, each
client continues to reach their full potential.
The Boucher Family
Elaine has been served by The PLUS Company
since she was 21 and left the Mt. Hope School.
Her family has been part of the PLUS family
for just as long, and her mom, Claire has served
on the Board since 1984.
Elaine entered PLUS when it was primarily a
sheltered workshop. Her mom, Claire, had
served on the Board at Mt. Hope and learned
about The PLUS Company from parents who
had helped start the agency. Claire joined the
board to learn first-hand what was going on, and
what opportunities the future might hold for Elaine. As the agency grew and changed, so did the
opportunities Elaine was able to take part in. Her mom remembers fondly when transportation was
added, providing Elaine with more independence as well as her family with more freedom. “The
coaches and staff that work with Elaine are always good and honest as to her needs and abilities. I
always feel great rapport,” stated Claire Boucher.
After many years of utilizing day services, Claire approached PLUS about caring for Elaine for a
month so she and her husband, who were approaching retirement, might travel. The following year
Elaine again spent a month with the same family. After seeing the positive changes in Elaine her
family decided it would be best for her to move in full-time with her family care provider.
Elaine now views her adult family care (AFC) home as her own. Her parents also view Brenda, the
AFC provider, as family. Claire is quick to acknowledge that Elaine is more independent, more
socialized, and more talkative after living with Brenda and her family for almost 13 years. “We still
spend a great deal of time with Elaine, but at the end of vacations and visits, she is ready to go
home. She enjoys spending time with Brenda’s grandchildren and has had additional family experiences living with her. I credit Brenda and her family for Elaine’s kindness and patience.”
Treating Clients as Individuals First
Providing vocational opportunities for clients with a wide range of skills
can be both challenging and incredibly rewarding. With creativity and
enough supports, individuals that 40 years ago would have had difficulty finding employment are now able to work.
The Dufoe Family
Warm and outgoing are definitely terms which would best
describe Jonathan Dufoe. Having a job to go to provides an outlet for him to socialize and be part of a group larger than his
immediate family. It also provides structure to his day, and
according to his father Joe, his ability to work has been greatly
missed in the brief periods he has been between jobs.
Jonathan has been receiving vocational services from The PLUS
Company since 1974. In fact, he is possibly the longest served client
in the vocational services area. His job history reads like a “who’s who”
of area businesses that have been prominent in the community. He has
worked for Hitchner, Compaq, Digital, Advanced Circuit Technologies, Colonial Electronics Manufacturing, and currently at Benchmark where he blackens out bar codes for recycling purposes and
does light janitorial tasks.
Joe is quick to praise The PLUS Company for the supports they have provided to Jonathan to
encourage his success at work. “Years ago staff used to call on Sunday nights and send home daily
notes letting his mother and I know how his day went, and areas he needed to work on. He kind of
grew up at The PLUS Company. He and his current supervisor Judy have an amazing rapport with
each other. She understands Jonathan and helps him deal with any issues that arise.”
In his younger days, Jonathan also was involved in the Special Olympics program through PLUS.
To stay active now he often serves as the pin boy at extended family golf events. Both father and
son agree that The PLUS Company fills a great void. According to Joe, “I don’t know what the heck
we would have done if he wasn’t with The PLUS Company. He goes in the morning and gets
dropped in the evening. He is very sociable and needs to be around people.”
Providing Opportunities for a Well-Rounded Life
In addition to providing secure housing and personalized employment services, The PLUS Company recognizes the importance of educational programs to provide
learning experiences, socialization, and camaraderie. Programs are varied and range from life skills such as cooking and literacy, to book clubs, athletic events, and
woodworking. A large percentage of the monies raised each year allow adult education programs to be offered.
Mark Izzi
Mark has been served by The PLUS Company Massachusetts program since the early 1990’s. Like many clients, he came to PLUS after completing high school
and learned strong work skills enabling him to get a job at the Residence Inn in Andover. Over time his skills have increased and he has able to move on to other
employment opportunities including his current job at 2-CPack.
While his jobs brought a sense of accomplishment, Mark was still looking for more in his life. When PLUS began offering evening education classes in MA, he
signed on for several classes and programs. Over time he has participated in ceramics, jazz dancing, mini golf, yoga, and even attended some Lowell Spinners
games.
According to Missy Giandomenico, PLUS Company Massachusetts Director, “Mark is so much more social and outgoing since participating in our educational
offerings. He has developed friendships with the other attendees and has even started communicating with them via telephone. Mark is always the first to sign up
for new program sessions and is always disappointed when he is forced to miss a class for any reason. It is very rewarding to see the balance the classes have provided in his life.”
