THE GIFT OF TIME, MEMORIES
PAT WALSH RECEIVES A
SECOND CHANCE, MAKES
THE MOST OF HIS 17 YEARS
In his early thirties, Pat Walsh was
diagnosed with a degenerative liver
disease called primary sclerosing
cholangitis (PSC) that necessitated a
transplant. After a 10-month wait, Pat
was provided with a second chance at life
because of a selfless decision made by a
family he would never meet.
In 1996, at the age of 34, Pat received
a new liver at the University of Nebraska
Medical Center in Omaha. The couple’s
boys, Sean and Skylar, were 6 and 3 at
the time. “It is heartbreaking to think
that without our donor, my youngest son
would have had little memory of what a
wonderful man his father was,” says Pat’s
wife, Marguerite.
Pat emerged from the surgery stronger
than ever. The Walsh family was forever
changed by the experience, which
inspired them to live in honor of Pat’s
life-saving donor.
“We thanked God for each day we had
together,” Marguerite says. “We didn’t
take anything for granted. Even the
smallest things became big things.”

The gift provided by organ, tissue
and eye donors is transformative for
recipients, their family members and
friends. This second chance makes it
possible for recipients to get back to
living.
I encourage you to take some time
to read through the list of names
on Pages 9 and 10 of this issue of
Connections. Each of the nearly 1,000
names represents a person — a mother
or father; son or daughter; sister or
brother; aunt, uncle or cousin. And the
generosity of these donors and those
who were closest to them cannot be
overstated. They are heroes.
The gift they so selflessly offered has
made things as simple as returning
to work or taking a weekend trip with
the family monumental occasions
for recipients, many of whom were
uncertain they would make it to their
next birthday. Day after day they are
creating memories with those who are
closest to them.
And in doing so, they are honoring
the memory of those who selflessly gave
the gift of life.
Additionally, many of you have
chosen to offer financial support to
Iowa Donor Network in the memory of
a loved one lost, or in honor of a donor,
staff member or volunteer who has
had an impact on your life. We thank
you for this support and assure you it
is being used to facilitate the making of
many more memories for those in need
of a life-saving transplant.

Annually, students in the Fundamentals of Oral Communication class at Des
Moines Area Community College participate in a Persuasive Speech Contest
with a prize of $100. This fall, Tanner Bistline, son of IDN staff member Lisa
Bistline offered the class a speech on the importance of organ, tissue and eye
donation.
Among the handful of students in the class, one had recently had knee
surgery and received deceased donor tissue, another had been in high school
and involved with fund raising for a girl in need of a heart transplant, and yet
another went to church with a girl needing a heart transplant.
Tanner’s speech was voted best in the contest and he chose to donate his
winnings to further advance awareness efforts at IDN. Accepting the check from
Tanner in the photo above is Lisa.

In December of 2013, a year after he
was placed back on the transplant list,
Pat passed away at the age of 51. The
Walsh family says the gift of life offered
17 years ago was never taken for granted.
“Funny, loving and kind are three
words that described our dad so well,”
wrote Skylar and Sean in a letter read by
the pastor at their father’s funeral. “But
faithful described him perfectly.”
“We were so blessed to have gotten that
second chance and for Pat to have been
with us for 17 years,” says Marguerite,
who shared 28 years of marriage with
Pat. “We were able to experience so much
in that time.
“Our donor enabled us to raise our
children, to experience soccer games,
school concerts, vacations and so much
more as a family,” she continues. “That
gift can only be described as a miracle.”
That miracle also enabled the Walsh
family to return to a normal routine
and the ups and downs of life like
work, hobbies and just hanging out. In
his downtime away from his job as a
Senior Circulation Specialist at August
Home Publishing Company, Pat loved
everything Drake (his alma mater),
golfing, beating any who challenged him
in a game of pool, and simply spending
time with family.
He was also proactive in sharing
his story and even spoke at events
coordinated by Iowa Donor Network.
He took his role as a donor advocate
seriously.
“He was always willing to share his
story,” Marguerite says. To further
spread awareness of the importance of
tissue, organ and eye donation, the Walsh
family directed gifts in Pat’s memory to
Iowa Donor Network.
“We knew that supporting IDN and
its mission to facilitate the gift of life
would be the perfect way to honor Pat’s
memory.”
Marguerite says the journey she and the
boys travelled alongside Pat has inspired
them to live a life filled with hope.
“Pat’s favorite Bible verse was ‘I can do
all things through Christ who strengthens
me,’ and he believed in the power of
prayer,” Marguerite says. “That is what
he taught me. Even in the most difficult
times, to never give up hope. That is how
he lived and that is the legacy he has left.”

SWIMMING IN SUPPORT OF THE GIFT OF LIFE
Members of the Des Moines Roosevelt swim team recently swam
to raise awareness of the importance of organ, tissue and eye
donation, while raising funds for Iowa Donor Network. Team
members collected donations for swimming 100 100-meter laps
during the event. We thank the swimmers for putting in such a
remarkable effort and all those who donated so generously in
support of IDN!

BAKE SALE RAISES FUNDS
FOR ORGAN RECIPIENT
Mary Greeley Medical Center hosted an employeeorganized bake sale to raise funds to assist kidney
recipient Tracy Gibbons with the costs of her medical
care. The sale raised an incredible $3,705.50 for
Tracy. Pictured, from left to right are Shelby Larson,
Tracy and Jeanne Rogert. Shelby and Jeanne helped
to coordinate the event.
Mary Greeley Medical Center has been a big
