This past Wednesday, over 250 9th graders received the fullness of the Holy Spirit through the
Sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Nelson Perez administered the Sacrament. I would like to
thank Sr. Nancy and all the catechists for their tireless work in forming these candidates over
the past three years.
Over the years, there have been a few changes to the Confirmation Rite. For those of us old
enough to remember, at Confirmation we were told we were “soldiers in Christ’s army” and we
were challenged to defend Christ and His family, the Church. At one part of the ceremony,
each confirmation candidate would kneel before the Bishop and the Bishop would tap the
person on the cheek. The tap was a reminder that, as a soldier in Christ’s army, you would have
to undergo hardships, just as any soldier would.
Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners:
In addition, at one point in the ceremony, the Bishop would stand in front of the Confirmation
candidates and ask them religion/catechism questions (basically, questions from the old
Baltimore catechism). A soldier defends the country; a solider in Christ’s army would be
someone who defends Christ and the Church. In order to defend Christ and his family, the
Church, you have to know about Christ and the Church.
Nowadays, we do not use the imagery of being a soldier in Christ’s army. Rather, we now use
the image that at Confirmation you become an “adult witness.” As we know from all the various Law and Order shows, a witness is called to the witness stand because the witness has
knowledge of the case and the witness is willing to testify in the case. As “adult witnesses,”,
our newly confirmed 9th graders are now challenged to know about Christ (the case) and to be
willing to stand up for Christ and the Church. In a society becoming increasingly hostile to the
teachings of Christ and the Church, this will be quite a challenge. I pray our newly confirmed
students will have the courage to accept that challenge. Christ guarantees that he will give them
the Holy Spirit to help them.
As you may recall, every year I work on a retreat weekend called “Retrouvaille.” It is a weekend experience for married couples who are having marriage problems. I always find it a
powerful experience. The Retrouvaille (a French word for “re-discovery) experience takes
place throughout the U.S. and, indeed, throughout the world. For more information, you can
give me a call or go on-line: www.retrouvaille.org. I highly recommend this weekend for
couples going through a difficult time in their marriages. Never think it is too late to save your
marriage. The very best gift we can give our children is a happy and healthy marriage.
Remember: Together, we can do something beautiful for God.
In Christ,
Fr. Brian
PS:
Fr. Andrew has recovered from the Mets loss. However, to be safe, I would not mention
it! As for me, it would be better not to mention the play of the NY Giants! Last Sunday,
I excommunicated the entire team. I do not think I can actually do that but I felt better
thinking I could!

Book of the Names of the Deceased
Beginning November 2 and continuing throughout the month of November,
a special book will be placed in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, inscribed
with the names of all who have died in our Parish Family over the past year.
In prayer, let us remember all of these men and women who have gone
before us, “marked with the sign of faith.” May our united prayers help us
to better understand and appreciate our faith in Christ, our risen Lord, who
conquers sin and death and brings new life to all!
The Sisters of Life walk in solidarity with
those suffering after abortion on the journey
of healing.
The Sisters host monthly Days of Prayer and Healing, monthly
Gatherings, and Hope and Healing Weekend Retreats.
These events are opportunities to experience the loving mercy of
God in a safe and sacred space.
All retreats are led by the Sisters of Life and women who have experienced both the suffering
of abortion and the joy of healing in Christ. The retreats are directed by faithful priests who
have a sensitivity and a heart for those who suffer. They include witnesses of mercy, Scripture
sharing, personal prayer, opportunity for Sacramental Confession, and the Holy Sacrifice of the
Mass.

You shall thus consecrate the fiftieth year and
proclaim a release through the land
to all its inhabitants …
You shall have the fiftieth year as a jubilee:
You shall not sow,
nor reap its
aftergrowth,
nor gather in from
its untrimmed vines.
For it is a jubilee:
It shall be holy to you

SAGE
The SAGE Group (Senior A dvocates for Growth and Enrichment) will meet on Tuesday,
November 10 in the Parish Center at 9:00am.
Our Time of Worship
We arrive and greet each other with a smile, a wave or a nod;
We kneel, and pause to contemplate our role as a people of God.
A silent moment to meditate, as our thoughts to God, we raise,
While preparing for the Liturgy - our prayer of thanks and praise.
We listen to the scriptures to understand God’s plan,
From Abraham to the disciples, how we’re called - each woman and man.
The celebrant then shares his thoughts on how our God above
Has chosen us, his people, to spread his message of love.
As the priest, in consecration, recalls the death of Christ,
We sense the awesome mystery of Salvation, and its price.
Christ’s precious Body and Blood are here for all of us to share;
As we ponder the burden of our sins - the weight he was willing to bear.
To receive this wondrous gift, no doubt, unites us as sister and brother;
For in communion with the Lord, we’re in communion with each other.
Our minds are filled with gladness to be in this holy space;
To give glory to our Creator and savor this gift of grace.
And even though he’s ascended, Jesus isn’t really gone;
His Spirit remains within us, so we can carry on.

Growing with the Gospel
Sharing the Gospel
God wants us to be humble, and he
wants us to share our blessings. So many
people Jesus met were proud, and they
thought they deserved special treatment.
Other people were rich, but they took
what they wanted first and gave God
what was left. The poor widow in today's
Gospel got it right. She quietly gave to
God all she had.
Mission for the Week
If you have a piggy bank, take money out and give it to God
next Sunday. Shhhh! Remember to give it to God quietly.
Prayer
Dear God, help
me to quietly
give you the
best of all that
you have given
me.
Something to
Draw
Draw a picture
of the poor
widow who
trusted God
with her whole
heart.
