The Baptism of the Lord
Reflecting on God’s Word . . .
Religious Education News
& Information
The other night I was looking out the window as the
sun was setting and the layers of clouds allowed the
sun to create an extraordinary sunset, painting some
clouds with a golden hue, while others were orange
and red, moving to purple and gray. It was a
stunning moment. The baptism of Jesus is one of
those brief moments of beauty, occurring in the first
three Gospels (and alluded to in the fourth).
As part of the Confirmation students ongoing service, they will meet on January
31st at 2:00pm to cut shoes out of jeans for
Sole Hope Shoe Project. Each student will
bring in a pair of jeans and $10.00 to
prepare shoes for the children in Uganda to
help prevent foot related diseases due to
walking barefoot.
Luke’s account differs from the others in that the
dramatic moment does not occur as Jesus is coming
up out of the water but only after his baptism, while
he is praying. Luke’s Gospel has been called the
Gospel of prayer, and from its beginning the adult
Jesus is presented as one who prays. At this moment
of intimacy, “heaven was opened and the Holy
Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a
dove” (Luke 3:21–22). While he was at prayer, the
voice spoke to him: “You are my beloved Son; with
you I am well pleased” (3:22). From here on we find
that Jesus is under the influence of the Holy Spirit,
and this Spirit directs him first into the desert to be
tested, then into his years of service.
Reminder . . . Saint papers are due in
With this solemn celebration of the baptism, we too
are sent back into the days called “Ordinary Time,”
reminded that God has spoken these same words to
us at our baptism: You are my son, my daughter. I
delight in you. I send you forth to serve as my Son,
Jesus, went forth to serve, accompanied by the Holy
Spirit.
- James A. Wallace, C.SS.R. -
Living God’s Word
We pray as Jesus prayed that we might hear the
voice of the Father, a voice that speaks of God’s
love for us. We ask that we might allow that Spirit,
God’s holy breath that came upon us at our own
baptism, to move us out into the world in service to
those most in need whom God has set before us.

Parking Lot Safety for Sunday
10:10am & Tuesday 4:30pm classes
Parents must come into the building to pick
up their child(ren) for safety reasons. Do not
drop your child off at the door. We can’t
stress enough the importance of adhering to
the arrival and departure policy for students.
Our parking lot is a very busy place and can
become dangerous for the children. The
entrance to the school for Religious
Education is only through the glass doors
marked “Religious Education” which is in
the school building located near the lower
parking lot of the Church. Please do not
park in the upper circle on Burr Road or use
that upper entrance. It is for the other schools
who also use the building. This entrance is to
be used only in an emergency.

A Prayer Shawl is intended to be a reminder of
God’s ever present love which is as near to you as your
own body is to your spirit. It is a gift for every time and
every occasion - - joyful or sorrowful, for every season
and circumstance of life, when you are weeping or when
you are celebrating. At times you may cling to a prayer
shawl because you need to cling to God. At other times
you will touch it only occasionally. You may want to
keep it always or someday you may feel prompted by
God to pass it on to someone else.
Come join us every Tuesday afternoon at 1:00pm in
the Beard Room at the Roncalli House.
No experience necessary! We will teach you how to knit
and crochet! For more information or if you know
someone who would like a shawl, please call Cathy
Romano at (203)226-5448.

An elderly woman would appreciate a friendly visit
on Sunday afternoons. She is a resident at the
Westport Health Rehab. Center on Burr
Road. Family members live far away and have
current health problems of their own. She loves
reading and chatting. If you can do this once a

Hospital & Nursing Home Visitations
Due to current privacy rights of patients, the priests do
not have any way of knowing if and
when parishioners are hospitalized. Therefore, if you
wish to be visited while in the hospital, please have a
family member notify the parish office and Father Tom
will be happy to visit, bring you Holy Communion and
share with you the Anointing of the Sacrament of the
Sick. Thank you.
Communion for the Sick & Homebound
Dear Parishioners, especially those homebound,
The Parish has recently commissioned Ministers of the
Eucharist to help during mass share the Body and Blood
of Christ. Some, at their request, asked to Serve, to bring
Communion to the Sick and Homebound. If you know
someone or are someone who is ill, homebound or in a
Nursing Home, please call the rectory with your name
and phone number. Someone will call you to find out
when it is convenient for you to be visited and receive
Communion. Thank you for letting us know of your
need. The parish is delighted to respond.
