MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Dear friends of Pearson College,
They say time flies. I have proof. You are now reading
the college’s 35th annual report, and an increasing
number of alumni are turning 50 years old. Fifty!
With maturity comes reflection: many tell me that
the impact of Pearson College on the ways they
have chosen to live their lives has only grown more
profound over the years.
We recently looked at data shared by our graduates from the first 25 years.
More than half of our alumni are working in government and
non-government organizations, education and healthcare; and Pearson
alumni are everywhere, committed to resolving the challenges facing
our planet and humanity today. Indeed more than 20 were engaged
in the Copenhagen Climate Conference and two are now writing sections
of the next report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change,
which shared the Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore in 2008.
While we struggle each year to balance our budget, the increasing number
of donors buoys us. This past year, more alumni and other individuals
donated than ever before. Our recurring donors also grew to over 400,
up from just 25 in 2005. This is encouraging as we work to make our
Vision 2020 plan a reality, ensuring that all aspects of Pearson life help
to incubate agents of change for a better world.
Thank you. None of this would be possible without the help of donors
like you, who invest in our future and allow us to continue to offer
a full scholarship to every student.
We are deeply grateful for your support.
David Hawley
College Director
Financial support for the Full Scholarship Program
does more than just change one life. It helps establish
forces and agents of change that create ripples
across geographies, religions, races and generations.
MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
The past year has indeed been a difficult and
challenging one. However, I feel we have many
reasons to be optimistic about the long-term future
of the College.
In April, in order to balance the budget, the Board
of Trustees took the very difficult decision to reduce
the student numbers over this year and the next
(160 scholars by the 2011-12 academic year).
This was a particularly hard step because the loss of 40 scholarships will
impact those who most need them given there are no replacements for
these scholarships at other United World Colleges. We view this downsizing
as a temporary measure and plan to return to the 200-student level
as our resources permit.
To date our applications to attract government support for facility upgrading
has not been successful. We continue to press for assistance however.
As we move forward, I am pleased to report the following:
• Director David Hawley has agreed to extend his term
for an additional five years.
• We continue to finalize and implement the Vision 2020 strategy;
• The Development Department is being expanded to enhance
our fundraising and communication capacity;
• The reduced student enrollment will make the much-needed
updating of the student residences more feasible. As funds permit,
these upgrades will be carried out. The first building to be
renovated will be Calgary House;
• Our alumni continue to increase their level of support,
many on an ongoing basis.
I want to thank David Hawley and the faculty and staff for their passionate
and unwavering commitment to the College. My thanks also go
to our dedicated and hardworking Trustees. Finally, I wish to express
our appreciation to the alumni for their increased levels of support –
you are the key to our long-term success!

Cyne Johnston, PC 20
Canada
BSc, McGill University, Psychology
MSc, Dalhousie University,
Human Communication Disorders (Audiology)
PhD, University of Ottawa, Population Health
“After Pearson College I felt it was my responsibility
to ‘take the initiative’ in all I did. Regardless of
whether I was studying, working or volunteering,
it was important to follow through and explore
new possibilities.”
As a Research Scientist with Alberta Health
Services, Cyne provides consultation to the
Population and Public Health Portfolio. She also
develops research that addresses provincial
health priorities. “My doctoral research examined
parental decision-making for health care matters.
I am interested in providing parents with
research evidence to help them make decisions
that are appropriate for their families and their
particular situation. In addition, I have recently
completed evaluations of the Calgary Childhood
Obesity Prevention Initiative and the Trans Fat
Reduction Policy.”
Cyne received scholarship support from the Government
of the Province of Nova Scotia Annual and George Weston
Limited Endowed Scholarships.
Douglas Alexander, PC 11
United Kingdom – Scotland
MA (Hons) 1st Class, Politics and Modern History,
University of Edinburgh
LLB (Dist), Dip LP, University of Edinburgh
“I look back on my time at Pearson College
with huge affection and even greater gratitude.
Undoubtedly my UWC experience has had
a profound effect on shaping my subsequent
work in public service and has given me the
opportunity to express many of the values
I encountered in these years.”
Douglas was first elected as Member of Parliament
in1997, to represent the community where he
grew up. In subsequent years he has held a range
of Government positions including Minister
for Trade, Investment and Foreign Affairs,
Secretary of State for Scotland, Secretary of State
for Transport, and until recently was Secretary
of State for International Development.
He has served as the UK’s Governor to the
World Bank, was a member of the UK Delegation
to last year’s Conference of the Parties in
Copenhagen, and was recently named as a Young
Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.
Douglas attended Pearson College on the
Christina Mary Hendrie Trust Endowed Scholarship.

“The Full Scholarship Program at Pearson College
provides an opportunity for an outstanding
education regardless of students’ backgrounds.
The academic program and extracurricular
activities open the mind and heart of students.”
“I was first exposed to international issues
and development matters at the College
and as a result I focused on Economics, Public
Administration and Planning at university
and then moved on to work in the International
Development area.”
Mohammed currently works as the Deputy
Country Director for Care International
in Palestine, focusing directly on assisting the
most needy people in Palestine.
Mohammed received support from the Government of Canada

Josh Grehan, PC 31
Canada
BA (Honors), Princeton University, Public Policy
After being awarded one of Princeton’s highest
undergraduate awards, Josh will spend the
next two years studying toward a Master’s degree
in Economic and Social History at Oxford
University. He was also elected by the Junior
and Senior classes of Princeton and the two most
recently graduated classes to serve a four-year
term on the Board of Trustees of Princeton
University as a Young Alumni Trustee with full
voting privileges.
Josh spent much of his childhood living in
First Nations communities in Saskatchewan,
where his mother worked as a civil rights
advocate. That experience led him to focus
on social justice and public policy at Princeton.
“I hope one day to return to Saskatchewan
and undertake a career that promotes
social justice. The opportunities provided
to me while I was young have allowed me
to end up where I am now. I have a large debt
to repay.”

CURRENT SCHOLARS’ DREAMS COME TRUE
Oscar, PC 36 Colombia
Spencer, PC 36 Canada
Michaela, PC 36 Slovakia
The College has given me an opportunity that
has changed my life and it encourages me in
many different ways. For example I am learning
how to play the piano, learning English, getting
skills for working in a community, studying
in an excellent academic system and exposure
to many other new things that I could not have
back home.
We do everything here with intention in the
sense that we carefully consider the repercussions
and effects of every action and communal
choice. This really facilitates my learning about
how people work together and function
as a community.
Studying at Pearson College has given me
a chance to have new experiences and to learn
to enjoy the fundamental differences between
people and between cultures, to learn that
differences in thoughts and behaviours are
part of the interesting diversity of life and not
something we should be afraid of.
Of course, I cannot ignore the knowledge that
this experience has given me about the problems
in the world, especially about the inequalities
and resulting lack of opportunities that
affect us all in a direct way. So Pearson College
represents a challenge as well, because of
the commitment I have made after becoming
aware that the world needs my help.
25th Anniversary Endowed Scholarship
Zahida, PC 36 Canada
My favourite things about Pearson College are:
The conversations. There are such diverse
stories here and people are so open to hearing
them. We are all united by the story we are
making together.
The learning environment. There are very
few places where every student really wants
to make the most of the educational
opportunities. Our teachers are passionate
and are open to continuing conversations
outside of the classroom.
The place. Seeing how other people have fallen
in love with our natural surroundings has made
me take pride in being from British Columbia.
Government of the Province of British Columbia
and HRH Prince of Wales International Scholarships
What I enjoy most is taking skills or information
I learn in one class and applying it in other classes.
For example, what I’ve learned in Philosophy
or Theatre have made my analyses of works
in English class so much richer and vice versa.
Southwestern Ontario and Florence Honderich
Endowed Scholarships
Zijian, PC 36 China
I was extremely happy when I was accepted for
a full scholarship to Pearson College. I wanted
to learn about different cultures and to learn
and understand more about the world.
I am taking part in Scuba Diving, First Aid and
Astronomy activities. They are all extraordinary,
but my favourite is Astronomy. For me, it’s
fascinating to watch the sky and stars. It is not
only learning about the universe, but also
experiencing the beauty, which is very important.
The Donner Canadian Foundation and
Government of Canada Endowed Scholarships
I hope to go on to study at university and
actively improve my knowledge about human
impacts on the environment.
Zonta District 8 Endowment Scholarship
Felix, PC 36 Ghana
I want my full scholarship sponsor to know that
their investment won’t go to waste! I love to
serve the Pearson community in any small way
possible. I love it every Friday afternoon
when I meet with my Pastoral Care group to
make decisions on how to make our community
an even better place. I was very happy when
I worked here on campus over the summer
helping out with keeping the College in a good
shape. I want to study Biochemistry and
Economics in university, maybe combining them
into biochemical economics, the first of its kind!

Education in its broadest sense, and in all its forms,
is the ultimate weapon in the battle against ignorance, bigotry
and prejudice and their offspring, conflict, violence and war.

Even before the first students arrived in 1974, Pearson College received generous support from
many individuals, corporations and foundations. These visionary donors enthusiastically embraced
Nobel Laureate and former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson’s dream for a college
‘open to all students with ability, regardless of financial means, religious belief or race’ by offering
full scholarships to every student. Our founding donors have over the years been joined by
many others who value the importance of that original dream.
All facets of College life have been enriched by the passionate ongoing commitment of the founding
members of the Board of Trustees. These individuals, all leaders in their own particular fields
of endeavour, have contributed much time and energy to the College and have also helped fund
a large number of the scholarships.
Pearson College donors have the rewarding opportunity of following in the footsteps of the founders
and continuing to build and assure the future of the College. Many donors establish scholarships
with no fixed criteria attached and therefore the funds are awarded each year to support a deserving
scholar selected from one of the more than100 countries represented at the College. In other cases,
scholarships are created by corporations to fund scholars from a specific country in which they
have business operations or by foundations or individuals with a keen interest in a particular nation
or region of the globe.
Many donors establish a personal connection with the students and come to directly see and feel
the very significant results of their support. A continuing relationship with a sponsor or host parent
makes daily life much easier for scholars whose cultural backgrounds may be radically different
from their fellow students and whose family are far away and may not truly understand the enormous
adjustment required on arrival at Pearson College.
Being able to share in a student’s journey through Pearson College
is a most rewarding experience; one that is often enhanced
by the continuing satisfaction and pleasure of watching further
academic achievements and careers unfold.
Dr. Aileen McConnell
In 1992 Dr. McConnell and her late husband, Dr. Fleming McConnell
established scholarship funding for students from China.

ALL PEARSON COLLEGE STUDENTS ATTEND ON FULL SCHOLARSHIP
Graduates Fund Memorial Scholarship
Alumni from PC years 4, 5 and 6 have joined
together to fund a scholarship in memory of
Pearson College graduate David Heymann, PC 5
New Zealand. He earned a Masters degree in
Economics from the University of Canterbury,
Christchurch, New Zealand and went on to work
for the World Bank. He had a keen interest in
many areas including music, skiing, scuba diving
and mountain climbing. David died in a climbing
accident on Mount Blanc in June 1989 at age 27.
The scholarship recipients for the 2009 –10
academic year wrote the following in their thank
you letters to the graduates: “I have to thank
you from the bottom of my heart for having
given me the opportunity to experience this,”
Daphine, PC 36 Uganda stated.“Every morning
I wake up to a new day without having to worry
about food, health and education, all because
of you.”
“I feel very proud about being a Pearson College
student. Here, I get a chance to participate in
many interesting activities that are not offered
at my school back home,” wrote Thao, PC 36
Vietnam.
Remembering Florence Honderich
Anne Enright, PC 6 Ireland and 2007 Man Booker
Prize winner wrote in response the following
to the David Heymann Memorial Scholarship
students: “David Heymann, whose name is on
your scholarship, was a clever and gentle person
from New Zealand, and something about the
way he looked at you (from some height, it has
to be said, as he was quite tall) made you realise
that New Zealand was very far away – from
Europe, where his ancestors came from, and
from Canada where he found himself during his
years at Pearson. David was a traveller and
a stranger, as his people were before him, and
he had the stranger’s gift of friendship. He took
people as he found them. When in doubt, he
was kind. This might be an odd thing to say,
but I don’t think he would mind how you used
your years at Pearson, or what you did with
your experience afterwards. He would just want
you to feel better for it, in the long term –
as, indeed, do I.”
Florence Honderich played a vital role in the
initial years of Pearson College. Beginning in
1980 she provided scholarship funding for
students from Canada and went on to establish
the Florence Honderich Endowed Scholarship
in 1997. To date 34 Honderich scholars have
attended the College.
“Florence was on the Ontario UWC Selection
Committee in the founding years of the United
World Colleges, helping to select students
to attend Atlantic College in Wales,” Jim Coutts
recalls. “When Pearson College opened she
became passionately involved and in addition
to her substantial financial contributions,
enjoyed serving as a mentor to our students.”
Florence’s son, John Honderich remembers,
“She thought that Pearson College was an
inspired idea and she would often invite students
that she would sponsor to come and visit
her and stay with her when they were going
through Toronto.”
Our students come from every imaginable background and location –
from big cities, rural villages, refugee camps, orphanages, public schools,
private schools and no school at all. They are invited to join the College
and attend on full scholarship.

You may support current Pearson College students
through annual giving or allow future students
to attend the College through endowment funds
or future gifts such as bequests and other options
listed below. All of these donations can also
provide generous tax benefits to donors in Canada
and to our supporters in the United States through
the Pearson College of the Pacific US Foundation.
Tax benefits for donors in the United Kingdom
are also available.
Annual and monthly donations by cheque,
credit card and through the College website
You may support Pearson College students by
sending a cheque through the mail or donate with
a credit card over the phone or through the College’s
secure website at www.pearsoncollege.ca.
Every day more loyal supporters are choosing to
set up automatic monthly donations using a cheque
or credit card. This popular choice spreads out
donations throughout the year to provide stable
support for Pearson College students and
is a more efficient way to give for many donors.
Further tax smart ways for Canadians to support Pearson College students and also assist
in their financial, retirement and estate planning are described below.
Gift in a Will – Bequest This is a simple and easy way to support Pearson students in the future.
A specific dollar amount or portion of one’s estate may be donated. A charitable tax receipt
will be sent to your Executor for the gift.
Gifts of Canadian RRSP and RRIF Funds This alternative allows you to easily designate RRSP and RRIF
funds or a percentage thereof as a future gift to the College without having to pass through your estate
or requiring a revision to your will. A charitable tax receipt is issued for the proceeds received.
Gifts of Publicly Traded Securities This is a great way to transfer a gift of appreciated publicly traded
securities such as stock, mutual funds or bonds to make a larger charitable gift at a lower cost to you.
By directly donating publicly traded securities to Pearson College, donors may eliminate capital gains
tax on donated securities and receive a charitable receipt for the full appreciated market value
of their gift to support Pearson students.
A Gift of Life Insurance This is an excellent gift for donors who wish to leave a substantial future gift
to the College through relatively modest premium payments. You receive a tax receipt for annual
premium payments.
Charitable gifts of Annuities This is a good choice for retired individuals in Canada who wish
to increase their annual income while also making a charitable gift to support Pearson College students.
A charitable gift annuity provides guaranteed monthly income for the rest for your life, a charitable tax
receipt to reduce personal income tax and a charitable donation to support Pearson students.
