From the Principal
While we faced some challenges during the
storms of last week, the devastation in
Nepal certainly puts our inconveniences
into perspective. Our thoughts and
sympathies are with the many families
touched by this disaster. We also thank all
those members of the many disaster
support organisations that helped us at
home and are helping in Nepal.

2014 Annual School Report
School ANZAC service
Last week we held our school Anzac Day service
commemorating the 100 year anniversary. The ceremony
included excerpts from the moving Anzac video produced by
students as part of an Anzac grant last year, a filmed address
by Squadron Leader Marshall Paterson, the donation of several
books about the Anzacs by Mr Bernie Cain, President of North
The school’s Annual Report for 2014 can now be accessed on
the school website and in Schoolzine (left menu downloads). It

everyone for your contributions.

Happy Mother’s Day
We hope all our wonderful mums have a lovely Mother’s Day
on Sunday 10 May. You have such an important role in our
students’ lives and are an essential part of our school
community. Thank you for all you do for our future citizens and
for our school.
We hope you will enjoy the special gifts and cards from your
children. On your behalf, I would like to thank Rachel Devenish
and Sandra Lockhart for coordinating the Mothers’ Day stall
and raffle. Also a big thank you to their team of helpers. Please
don’t forget to ensure that your child has some money for the
stall on Monday.
K-2 Schoolhouse Museum Visit
A School At War
On Wednesday 22 April, Kindergarten, Year 1 and 2 students
had the opportunity to visit the onsite Schoolhouse Museum.
The museum experience allowed students to see what it was
like to be at school during war time. The students started the
day with a recreation of a 1915 morning assembly to set the
context, build empathy, engage the emotions and consider
points of view of the period.
They then participated in three different activities:
1. Exercise and marching
Students undertook a series of simple physical exercises whilst
standing in ranks and pretending to be soldiers marching. The
commands, positioning and movements were taken directly
from the Junior Cadet Training Text Book (1916).
2. The War Front - 1877 schoolroom
Postcard to a soldier – students were able to use a pen and
ink to write a message on a reproduction WW1 postcard to a
soldier serving at the front.
Empire Day tableau – students dressed in costumes and
recreated a 1915 Empire Day tableau using original
photographs of Empire Day tableaus to guide their costuming
and positioning.
3. The Home Front - 1910 rooms
Military training camp model – students looked at photos of
a military camp model and postcards of military training camps
in Australia and Egypt and created a large model of a military
training camp using cone-shaped tents, WW1 toy soldiers,
horses and carts, trees and other items.
Red Cross work – students took on the role of junior Red
Cross members who rolled and packed cloth bandages and
dressings to send to the front.
Food packaging – students used old scales to weigh and
package potatoes to send to the front.
Thank you to the wonderful teaching staff at the NSW
Schoolhouse Museum for delivering an engaging and
educational experience, even with the difficult weather
conditions.

My “new” favourite comment at the museum.
Having explained to the class about writing a message or
poems on a note and putting it in the socks being posted to
a soldier in a care package. A year 2 girl puts up her hand
and said “hearing about the note makes me very happy. I
watched something very sad about the Australian soldiers on
the television on the weekend and it makes me feel happy to
know that they would have received a message from a school
child.” Melt my heart.

Uniform Shop News
Did you know that earlier school uniforms were quite elaborate!
In the late 18th century, a school boy could own a dozen
shirts, almost as many cravats, half a dozen waist coats and
tightly fitted breeches, hats, gloves, stockings, handkerchiefs,
and heeled shoes.
When girls started going to boarding schools in the 19th
century, their wardrobes were even more elaborate. A typical
girl in a boarding school might own a dozen dresses of varying
styles and formality for different occasions, a decorative quilted
petticoat, a fancy hat, a hooped petticoat, decorative pinafores,
a cloak, a corset, heeled shoes, stockings, gloves, and
handkerchiefs.
Luckily we are not so extravagant
Online Orders
An online order is still the easiest and quickest way to place an
order.
• Access the order form via the school website – click
on the “Parents” tab and then on “School Uniform
and Band Shop”
• If you have Excel, complete your details and order
directly onto the form. It will even automatically
calculate the total payment for you.
• From the windows file menu, click on “Save & Send”
to send your completed order via email to the
Uniform Shop. Alternatively you can save the file as
an Excel or PDF document and manually attach it to
your email.
• Make your payment by EFT. You can also pay in
person by cheque or cash when you collect your
order.
If you don’t have Excel, you can still print the order form as a
PDF or pick up a copy from outside the Uniform Shop. Then
just fill it in and either scan and email it to us, or drop it to the
Uniform Shop or school office.
Payment can be made by EFT, cash or cheque.
Donations
Thank you for the donations of pre-loved uniforms. We are
always happy to take them. Don’t forget that all the money
from sales of second-hand items goes directly to the school to
benefit our kids.
Thank you to our volunteers
Many thanks to our volunteers this week –
Kate Gillies, Tania Thomson, Sam Culham,
Sam Al Jabr, Natalie Wren, Natasha Kruger
and Kate Derbidge. We couldn’t do it without
you!
Busy, busy, busy
Last week saw bumper sales at the Uniform
Shop, as the cold and wet weather brought
lots of chilly customers to our door. Thank
you to those who waited when the queues
were long. We also had a record week for
online orders.
As a result of high demand, we ran out of
sloppy joes in size 6 but they have been ordered and should
be in by Friday. If you were one of the people who missed out,
please email us during the week to make sure they have arrived
or feel free to pop in on Friday. We have plenty of lovely warm
polar fleece jumpers in all sizes
The small soccer socks have arrived, so if you still need a pair,
please come and see us.
You may not know that you can even buy socks and girls
tights (good quality – nice and thick). We also have rain capes,
designed to cover both the child and their backpack, and with
rain forecast for the next week and more, now is the time to get
one!
Please feel free to contact us at any time on
[email protected] and we will respond as quickly as
possible.

This week the children have again rediscovered their love of
building towers of blocks. It is so encouraging to see the
interaction between year groups, and the teamwork that this
sparks.
Knitting bunnies is also loved once more, and with a few people
knowing how to make them, and the inspiration of sewing on
buttons for eyes, this craft could take off!
Due to the crazy weather the children have been making clay
creations on the balcony. Despite the huge mess - it has been
very creative! Without the ability to play in nature, they are
enjoying interacting and creating with the clay.

One very happy student
Last year the school community generously
donated funds towards purchasing a very
special Christmas gift for one of our
students. The adjustable desk and chair,
that will hopefully make Bianca’s learning
journey more comfortable, finally arrived last
week.
Chris, Bianca and I would sincerely like to thank yourself and
the school for Bianca's new desk we really appreciate it and
are humbled by the love and support that has been shown to
Bianca.
Thank you
Resilience Program – Term 2
This term we are continuing with our ‘Resilience’ unit. A
reminder that resilience is the ability to cope and thrive when
faced with negative events, challenges or adversity. All students
are beginning the term by looking the topic of problem solving.
It is important for students to develop problem solving skills
through explicitly taught learning activities. Such skills enable
them to cope with challenges they may face in their daily lives
now and in the future. Problem solving requires children to
think critically about the possible solutions to problems before
deciding on which to choose. At home, encourage your
children to think of their own solutions to problems before
intervening to assist them.
