Through the Transforming Care campaign for “The New Jersey Shore,” we proudly celebrate the opening of the new Northwest Pavilion. With 108 private rooms, advanced technology and the largest emergency care center in the state, this expansion has created the ultimate healing environment for patients throughout the region. As so many of us wrestle with the challenges of an uncertain economy, tough choices are inevitable when it comes to charitable giving. History has shown that in difficult times, Americans embrace the value of giving in a unique way, thoughtfully supporting organizations that represent community priorities, while providing the greatest opportunity for their finite philanthropic dollar to touch the most lives. Entering the fall, I am pleased to report we are outpacing the past few years in donor contributions. Through the Transforming Care campaign, more than $18 million has been raised to change the lives of countless patients and their loved ones for years to come. The result is a renewed sense of mission, as Jersey Shore University Medical Center and the great family of caregivers who embody it are being entrusted with your precious investments. It is an honorable and energizing responsibility. The beginnings of Jersey Shore University Medical Center are rooted in philanthropy and the Transforming Care effort has been another shining example of that tradition holding true today. Despite unstable economic times, our team members, our physicians, neighbors and friends have played a significant role in this historic effort. I have no doubt that with the continued trust and support of our community, JSUMC will continue to be recognized among the finest independent academic medical centers in the state. Thank you. When he passed away suddenly last year at the age of 56, his wife decided to honor his memory by creating a named scholarship. Dr. Christine Hedges, coordinator of nursing research at the Ann May Center, established the Frank Hedges Memorial Scholarship to recognize the dedication of the nursing staff at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Pam Egnatovich, a 19 year employee and administrative supervisor for MICU/CCU, received the first Frank Hedges Memorial Scholarship this year designed to assist in furthering the recipient’s nursing education. “This award was particularly special to me because I could see how much it meant to the Hedges family. Dr. Christine Hedges said the personal statement I wrote reminded her of her own family when she was working toward her Masters and Doctorate and that made me feel personally connected to the Hedges family,” Pam said. She added that the award will help her pay for books while working towards her master’s degree. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital in Neptune, Ocean Medical Center in Brick, Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank, and Meridian partner companies located throughout Ocean and Monmouth Counties. Amid a sea of pertinent topics brought about by current economic times, there is one that is nearest and dearest to our hearts – universal healthcare. Keynote speaker Patricia Andriolo-Bull, Director of Commonwealth Choice of Massachusetts, led the discussion at the Ocean Place Resort and Spa in Long Branch on the model being used in her state of providing universal healthcare for residents and how it might be applied in New Jersey. The Healthcare Perspectives Luncheon, an educational forum, is held each year in order to enable local business leaders to learn about health care issues that have an impact on their companies and communities. These individuals in turn described the journey which began with a vision several years ago and culminated with this very special evening. Many thanks to the contributors to this project who helped the team at Jersey Shore University Medical Center by “working on a dream!” Transforming Care Project Put to Ultimate Test Administrators Transformed into Patients During Overnight Visit For 75 senior staff members, putting yourself in the patient’s shoes took on a whole new meaning when they donned hospital scrubs for an overnight visit this summer. A sleep over in the new Northwest Pavilion provided an opportunity to learn more about the technology integration, 6 give invaluable feedback to the project team and become familiar with the layout and design of the new space, according to Kathryn B. Collins, FACHE, Vice President for Campus Planning. “We ordered our dinner from the patient menu, then split into teams for a scavenger hunt specifically designed to identify new equipment and familiarize our team with the new facility, before turning in for the night in our assigned patient room,” Kathryn said. “We really got a feel for the space from the patient perspective.” The night was not only a fun learning experience, but also a charitable one. Team members devoted a portion of their 12-hour stay to support JSUMC’s ongoing organ donation awareness campaign, stuffing letters stressing the need for organ donors. Our senior staff members are still talking about the educational value of the overnight stay. M omes Reality I N G C A R E A As part of the Transforming Care expansion project, Jersey Shore University Medical Center has received a federal appropriation from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for more than $565,000 thanks to the support of our federal representatives: Senator Frank Lautenberg, Senator Robert Menendez and Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. “I am honored to have been able to assist with funding for a hospital expansion of this magnitude that will have a direct impact on the health and well-being of the residents of Ocean and Monmouth Counties,” said Congressman Pallone. “The $300 million Transforming Care project at Jersey Shore University Medical Center is integral to meeting the health care needs of our neighbors and loved ones well into the future.” The funds were used to purchase beds for the new inpatient pavilion. The pavilion includes three new nursing units that house 36 private rooms in 12-bed “neighborhoods”. In addition, with the relocation to the new wing, Jersey Shore’s Emergency Department is now over an acre in size. We now have the capability of efficiently treating over 100,000 patients per year. The Transforming Care expansion project provides easier access to the hospital for patients, visitors and families, physicians, staff and our community. We thank our federal representatives for their commitment to advancing the health care of our region. J S U M C Phoebe’s Takes Flight! Federal Funds Secured for Transforming Care Project Local Government Officials to Thank for $500,000 Appropriation T “Our entire team has united to make this transformation happen, and we’ve worked hard to ensure that the project is on budget and on time. Jersey Shore is making a strong statement that we’re entirely committed to meeting the need of our community – and to being the provider of choice in the region.” After much anticipation, Phoebe’s, our new team member café, opened this summer. Penned by three long time employees and hospital donors, Marilyn Dobson, Linda Gifford and Mary Mudd, the café name is the same as the yellow butterfly, indigenous to Monmouth County, that became the symbol of the transformation project. “I am thrilled to see the finished product. We choose the name during a contest two years ago and it means a lot to see Phoebe’s Café open for business,” said Linda. “As an employee of Meridian for 21 years, I am excited about the most recent changes.” – Steven G. Littleson, FACHE, President of Jersey Shore Foundation is “Going Green” Some of the most advanced medical technology in the country is being housed in the new Northwest Pavilion at Jersey Shore. So, when it came time to thank the numerous donors that made this project possible, it only made sense to ride the technology wave into the future. An interactive donor wall acknowledging every gift made to the Transforming Care capital campaign, from our physicians, staff, board members and friends, will be unveiled in the new addition early next year. Be sure to check out this interesting and environmentally-friendly recognition piece. In other efforts to go green, the JSUMC Foundation will soon be using email and text messaging to keep you informed. As part of Infotainment (Information-Entertainment Systems), a service similar to the concierge service on a hotel television, charitable gifts will soon be made from patient rooms using a wireless keyboard, according to Nancy Barone, senior development officer. A The first donor every year to the Team Member Annual Fund, Rose Grenier shows off her name recognition butterfly with campaign co-chair Dennis Broschart. JSUMC Is Where Their Hearts Are Record Number Participate in 2009 Employee Drive challenging economy did not stop generous Jersey Shore University Medical Center team members from giving back during the 2009 “Count Me In” Team Member Annual Fund campaign this spring. Nearly 500 team members gave more than $57,000 to the many departments and programs within the medical center. “I think we were successful mainly because so many team members feel great pride in being associated with JSUMC and want to be a part of the hospital’s continued success. A dollar or two per pay period might not impact take home pay too much, but all those pledges together really add up!” said Team Member Annual Fund committee co-chair, Grace M. Hickey, Ph.D., manager of clinical operations for behavioral health services. Grace added that being able to earmark one’s pledge to a specific department or program is appreciated by our team members. This prompted Kelly Layton-Bogdany, RN to come together with other generous team members in support of their unit. She hopes to be able to use funds raised during the employee drive to further educate the community on stroke risk factors and prevention. “May is Stroke Awareness and Prevention month and we can never be too prepared with pamphlets and handouts,” Kelly said. “There are also many times that families, friends, patients and doctors want to give gifts or money in honor of our team. This fund is a great place to direct those gifts and inform our donors that they will be put to good use.” 8 “We are grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this system and hope that grateful patients will take advantage of all that it has to offer.” said Nancy. “The Foundation is always looking for new, innovative and environmentally friendly ways to make giving convenient for our generous donors.” Infotainment, which is available in the new 108 bed Northwest Pavilion, puts the Internet, movies, music, video games and information about prescriptions and medical procedures at your fingertips during your stay. The network, which will soon be added to the rest of the hospital, can also be used to order meals from the hospital menu and even to order a video about the medical procedure you will undergo during your stay. M JSUMC Heritage Club Me Making a Choice Today to Make a Difference for Tomorrow embers of Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation’s Heritage Club gathered together this summer to enjoy an afternoon tea, an update and tour of the expansion project A Thank You Goes a Long Way A L E A V E A L E G A C Y Foundation Cuts Check After Apologizing for Lack of Funds fter receiving notification explaining that a grant for our dental clinic could not be awarded due to the challenging economic climate, the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation was quick to thank this past donor for their consideration and turn the tables. “We wrote them a letter thanking them for their enormous past support of the patients we serve and let them know that we would gladly assist them during a difficult time if they needed us,” said Joanne DiNapoli, director of foundation and government grants. The quality care provided by our dental clinic, along with Joanne’s goodwill got the job done. Just weeks after receiving Joanne’s letter, The Danellie Foundation of Marlton, NJ sent a check for purchase of the supplies needed to support the nearly 5,000 patients that visit our free dental clinic each year. The clinic was established to provide high quality dental care to Monmouth and Ocean county communities regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. Accredited by the American Dental Association, the clinic is currently the only charity care dental provider in the area. embers Meet Over Tea and an informative lecture on oncology research by Dr. Arthur Topilow, director of the section of hematology/oncology at Jersey Shore. Established by the Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation trustees, the Heritage Club is comprised of individuals who have planned for the long-term future of Jersey Shore by naming the hospital as the beneficiary of their will, retirement plan or life insurance policy, or who have set up gifts that provide income for themselves now, with the principal benefiting Jersey Shore after they pass on. If you have included JSUMC as a beneficiary of your estate, or would like more information about becoming a Heritage Club member, please check off the appropriate boxes on the reply envelope or call Nancy Barone at (732) 751-5117. T What Will Your Legacy Be? Long-time supporter Norman Buckman has made an investment in the future of JSUMC with a planned gift. he word “legacy” literally means something handed down from the past. Your legacy will be shaped by the impact you have had on people, organizations and the world. You receive Making a Difference because you have had an impact on Jersey Shore University Medical Center. Through your donations of time, treasure and talent, you have helped meet the needs of all who live and work here. For this you have our heartfelt thanks. As you consider your long-term financial and estate plans, we hope that you will consider adding to your JSUMC legacy by partnering with us to secure the hospital’s future while also meeting your personal planning objectives. Your legacy will be shaped by the impact you have had on people, organizations and the world. We find that many of our most loyal friends want to financially help Jersey Shore achieve its mission, but struggle with how to do so when times are tough. Fortunately, there are many ways you can make a gift while also taking care of your own needs. For example, do you need to: • Increase your income now or for retirement? • Pay for college for your children or grandchildren? • Maximize your children’s inheritance? Having been a patient as well as an employee, Susan feels strongly about supporting the future of Jersey Shore through annual contributions. “I have bared witness to phenomenal growth and visionary leadership at Jersey Shore over the years. This inspires a culture of pride for myself and fellow team members,” she said. “I have also been a patient here, along with all four of my children, my husband and my father. The care we received was always outstanding, second to none. Giving back is essential to ensuring that quality health care is available to our entire community. Through my gifts, I am showing my support for the momentum that is advancing my hospital into the future and has made my career at Jersey Shore more than just a job.” Jersey Shore University Medical Center Foundation 4900 Route 33, Suite 200 Neptune, NJ 07753 Telephone: 732-751-5117 Fax: 732-751-5120 Here’s another way you can support Jersey Shore University Medical Center: Purchase an item from our new wish list.
