The 18th Maccabiah Games are only months away and I extend my personal invitation to you to join us in
Israel and share the excitement, the pageantry and the emotions of the Games as a member of Team USA
or the Maccabi USA Mission. This celebration of Jewish spirit, solidarity and pride stirs the souls of our
athletes and Jews everywhere. The Maccabiah makes a strong and definitive statement: We are one family,
we are one nation and we are proud to be Jews.
We are planning to send a Team of 970+ athletes to the Games and we need your help to raise the funds
necessary
to meet the financial challenges we are currently facing — escalating energy costs, rising airline

18TH “CHAI” WORLD MACCABIAH GAMES
As an added feature to the upcoming Maccabiah Games, we moved some
of the training camps to Israel. On June 28th, 2009 our first teams will be
leaving to train there. The balance of the Juniors, Youth and Open participants
will be leaving on July 2nd. Our reputation and mission of Jewish presence and
pride has attracted top, well-respected coaches. All across the country, they —
along with our sports chairs — are selecting athletes for our various teams,
and
tryouts have been held for most of our team sports. The golf qualifier

of Golf Chairman Ira Kamens.
During this process, volunteers have been hard at work to help raise money to send what will
be the largest-ever USA Maccabiah Team. As of this writing, Team USA will be 984 members comprised of 72 teams in 27 different sports. In addition, the Mission Program that includes friends,
supporters, organizers and family members is estimated at 500 people.
At the May Organizing Plenum in Israel our leadership was a part of over 200 delegates from most of the 62 nations
participating in next year’s Maccabiah. As a result of tabulations of Entry Form #1 we were most pleased to note that
athletic participation was the highest ever, and most of the sports in which the USA participates are well-represented. Our
USA delegates on the international committees have been instrumental in assuring the proper running of these Games.
Sports is what brings us to Israel to compete with other Jewish athletes from around the world, but that is merely the means
to connecting our participants with their heritage and to creating a bond with Israel. I am particularly excited about our cultural
Pre-camp program, which provides our Open, Juniors and Youth athletes the opportunity to experience the
history, determination and fortitude of the Jewish People. The Chairs of this unmatched program, Bob Spivak and Jodi Reff,
have developed a busy itinerary that includes touring historic sites, cultural identity seminars, and recreational activities prior
to the Games. We expect that with this enhancement of the Maccabiah experience, our athletes will develop a bond with
each other, with their heritage, and with the centrality of the State of Israel.
How lucky we are to be joined by our spiritual advisor, Team Rabbi Irwin Kula. His leadership will help make this trip “three
weeks to experience, a lifetime to remember.”

It is my pleasure to announce that Ron Carner, Maccabi World Union
Vice President, MUSA First Vice President and our 18th Maccabiah Chair,
has been honored by being chosen as a recipient of the Yakir Maccabi
Award, the highest honor the Maccabi Movement bestows. The award is
given to outstanding international Maccabi leaders for their long and
dedicated service. Instituted in 1984, the Award has thus far been made to
103 prominent and deserving individuals. The Yakir Award ceremony will
be held during the Maccabiah and we will be there to support Ron whose
passion and commitment to Maccabi USA, Maccabi World Union and to
Israel has been an inspiration to us all.
We are proud of our partnership with JCC Association and are pleased
to welcome Ed Cohen as the new Chairman of the Continental
Governing Board and Kenny Silverboard as the new JCC Maccabi Games
Director. We extend our thanks and appreciation to outgoing CGB
Chairman Steve Reiner and former JCC Maccabi Games Director Lenny
Silberman for their leadership during the past 14 years and for their outstanding contributions to the growth and success of the JCC Maccabi
Games.
You, our volunteers, are the lifeblood of our organization and we
need your help to meet the challenges of tomorrow. You are our greatest

MACCABI USA/SPORTS FOR ISRAEL HONORS DR. DANIEL BUKANTZ
On a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Sarasota, Florida, on March 31st,
Maccabi USA had the pleasure of paying tribute to Dr. Daniel (Danny)
Bukantz. He was a Fencer for four consecutive U.S. Olympic Teams from
1948 through 1960. Danny then went on to be an American referee at the
Olympic Games from 1964 through 1984, except for the U.S. boycotted
1980 Olympic Games. He participated in the 1950 3rd World Maccabiah
Games and won a Gold Medal in Foil Fencing.
Surrounded by friends and family, Dr. Bukantz was thrilled to have his
Fencing career highlighted and captured on video. His son, Jeffrey, himself
a Maccabiah Fencer, spoke eloquently about his father’s Fencing career
and connection with Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel.
On July 26, 2008 Dr. Bukantz passed away in his sleep after a stoic battle
with lung cancer. He is survived by his wife Alice, son Jeffrey, daughter-inlaw Carol and grandchildren Stephanie and Michael. Our thoughts and
prayers are with the Bukantz Family.
May his memory be for a blessing.

CREATING CONNECTIONS — WITH ISRAEL AND JEWISH CONTINUITY
Maccabi USA/Sports for Israel is about many things. First and foremost,
we are about Sports at an international level. However, Sports is merely a
vehicle for connecting our athletes to their Jewish Heritage, Culture and
the State of Israel. In our own unique way we are able to build Jewish Pride
and Identity in our quest to ensure Jewish Continuity.
Over the past 75+ years, more than 5,000 Americans have represented
the USA with pride and dignity at the World Maccabiah Games. As we
embark on the 18th Maccabiah Games in Israel next July, we are proud that
we will have our largest delegation ever, with a U.S. Team well over 900
strong. They will be joining over 9,000 athletes from 60 countries on six
continents around the world for the third largest international athletic
competition in the world. Hundreds of volunteers have been working
non-stop to pull together the many details of our Team’s participation,
and for this we are very grateful. The Maccabiah is the “Crown Jewel” of
the Jewish Sports world. What the Games have done for Israel and the
50,000 participants over all those years, has been immeasurable.
Team USA embarked on a cultural Pre-camp over 20 years ago in an
effort to enhance the Maccabiah experience. Because of the impact this
program has had on past participants, the Pre-camp for our Juniors and
Open athletes has been improved and expanded, so that it continues to
be one of the highlights of the Maccabiah experience. We are the only
delegation that has the premier position of a Team Rabbi who is part of
the Pre-camp experience and leads the cultural identity seminars and religious services. The athletes will see many of the cultural and religious
highlights Israel has to offer. Additionally, they have the opportunity to
participate in a B’nai Mitzvah Ceremony and a unique Tzedakah project
known as Lev L’Lev (Heart to Heart). The Lev L’Lev project provides an
opportunity for our athletes to share gifts with children in facilities such

Opening Ceremonies, 17th World Maccabiah Games, Ramat Gan Stadium
as rehabilitation centers, absorption centers and hospitals. Additionally,
they are able to provide a sports demonstration which puts a smile on
everyone’s faces — the athletes and the kids they visit. It is a unique way
for our Team to ‘give back to the community’ while in Israel.
We bring athletic Jews to Israel, and take home Jewish Athletes. The
impact is profound and meaningful — just ask those who have been at the
Maccabiah. We see it in their eyes and in their hearts. And when they
return home, Team members get involved and stay involved with their
local Jewish community. A piece of their heart remains in Israel and they
stay connected for a lifetime.
We hope that you will join us next summer as the Jewish Journey continues. Come with us to experience the Opening Ceremonies, experience
the Maccabiah and experience the beauty of Israel. Whether it is your first
visit or your 18th, it will be the experience of a lifetime.

THE 18TH “CHAI” MACCABIAH GAMES
MACCABI USA MISSION PROGRAM
Maccabi USA has an exciting new Mission Program being developed by
Co-chairs Claudia Fiks and Phyllis Magerman in conjunction with the 18th
“Chai” World Maccabiah Games.
New this year will be three Mission Program Packages, designed to
meet the varying needs of Masters Athletes, Family and Friends of
Athletes. These packages will vary in length, from 14 days to 10 days. They
will ALL include Opening Ceremonies festivities on July 13, 2009 at Ramat
Gan Stadium, touring, exclusive hospitality desk services and admission to
all competitions. Tours and special events will vary based on the package
chosen, but there will be ample opportunity to celebrate our heritage as
part of the Maccabi USA Family.
Participation in the Mission Program provides a seamless experience
for those coming to Israel as Masters Athletes, Family and Friends of
Athletes. Airfare, airport transfers in Israel, Hotel accommodations,
Games Credentials, tours, parties including a spectacular Gala Beach Party
and the exclusive services of a private Hospitality Desk and private
Breakfast Room are included with all the packages.

YAKIR AWARD
The Yakir Maccabi Award was first given out in 1984 in recognition of
those individuals who change lives through their dedication and commitment to the ideals of the Maccabi Movement, Jewish Heritage and the
preservation of the Jewish People. It is the highest accolade Maccabi
World Union can bestow on an individual for their lifetime achievement
that honors the past and safeguards the future for generations to come.
Every four years the Executive Committee of Maccabi World Union
has the privilege to honor the most respected volunteers who have
devoted so much of their time to our wonderful Movement. The award is
given out at the Maccabiah Games and is truly a highlight.
Next year, Ron Carner will be honored for his many years of dedicated
service to the Maccabi Movement. He follows in the footsteps of some of
our greatest leaders of the Movement, including Nat Holman (1984),
Harold Zimman (1989), Max Sheldon (1997), Bob Spivak (2001) and Alan
Sherman (2005). Always the advocate who shows great enthusiasm for
the Maccabi Movement, Ron is shown at this year’s NCAA finals in
San Antonio.

Over 85 Sports Chairmen came to New York City on April 13 for a packed
day to prepare for the 18th “Chai” World Maccabiah Games in July, 2009.
Ron Carner, General Chairman for the Committee, led the meeting and
was joined by the leadership of the organization and the Steering
Committee to provide critical information to the Sports Chairs to help
them with Team recruitment and fundraising. Information on Pre-camp,
Training, Apparel and Mission Programs was presented to the group.
Everyone was inspired by presentations from USA Team Rabbi, Irwin Kula
and Open Men’s Basketball Coach, Bruce Pearl.

on June 9. Although the
temperatures soared above
100 degrees at times, all
who participated played all
18 holes of this top-rated

USA/Sports for Israel.

The Metropolitan Chicago Golf Tournament
Chairman Mark Fishman and his outstanding steering committee
produced a fantastic golf event at Sunset Ridge Country Club in
Northfield, IL on July 28. The weather was perfect and the golf was
challenging. Fishman and his team raised over $75,000 for Maccabi
USA/Sports for Israel with this event which included a live auction
with great prizes. The volunteers who supported this day of golf
did a great job making sure everything ran smoothly.
