SPECIALIZATION
IN
TEACHING
SPANISH AS A
FOREIGN LANGUAGE

OVERVIEW
The international expansion of Spanish, its value as an
economic resource and the demographic importance of
Latin America – where nine out of every ten Spanish
speakers live – are the key factors for the spreading of
Spanish in the modern knowledge community.
Mexico, through Universidad Nacional Autónoma de
México (UNAM), Centro de Enseñanza para Extranjeros
(CEPE) and Centro de Enseñanza de Lenguas Extranjeras
(CELE), plays a fundamental role within the globalized
framework. Mexico, for its privileged position of being the
country with the maximum number of Spanish speakers;
UNAM for being the most important educational institution
in the country; CEPE for an 85 years’ tradition and
experience in spreading the Spanish language and Mexican
culture and CELE for its vast experience in the field of
applied linguistics research and the formation and updating
of linguistics’ professors.
Over the last few years, the demand for professional experts
for teaching Spanish as a foreign language has increased
considerably in our continent, firstly because of the
importance that Spanish has acquired in North America due
to the demographic expansion of Spanish speakers in this
region and secondly for the decision made by Brazil and
Quebec when they declared Spanish as a compulsory
second language in middle and higher education.
This is the reason why universities and government
institutions of USA, Canada and Brazil have requested
UNAM to help them train professors of Spanish as a foreign
language, knowing the prestige and recognition of our
University in this field. CEPE and CELE intend to respond to
this demand through virtual academic programs for teacher
training as well as joint virtual postgraduate programs,
which allow the universities of the above mentioned
countries to complement their existing programs and to
achieve their final goal.
OBJECTIVE
Professionalize teaching activities of the professors of
Spanish as a foreign language so they possess an
extensive theoretical and methodological knowledge
and to be able to offer an innovative response, which is
ethical and independent of the educational demands in
their fields.
Allow a higher number of students to participate in the
program regardless where they live and with the
possibility of continuing their professional practice
during their studies.
Train the students to participate in the teaching-learning
process in virtual environments so they can incorporate
this knowledge in their teaching practice.
Mold professionals in the area so they can adequately
spread Mexican Spanish along with the cultural
repertory, incorporating new educational methods.
