Debating ANILCA: Lesson Plan
#4
DO NOW
In your journals, reflect on the
following:
a) How has Mahopac tried to preserve the beauty
a)
and naturalism of its community?
How has the public been allowed to partake
in the preservation of the beauty and
naturalism of Mahopac?
Discussion
A) How much access does the community
allow the public to these parks?
B) What restrictions should be placed on the
community’s usage of these parks?
C) Is it fair to place restrictions in places that
are deemed public domain? Why or why
not?
Denali National Park and
Preserve
•
Read the following statements posted around
Denali Park. As you examine each one, reflect
on the following:
1) What seems to be the mission of Denali National
Park and Preserve?
2) How do the mission statements reflect
maintaining a balance between preservation and
allowing the public access to the park?
3) What varying perspectives did the park offer to its
public?

In your groups, you will be researching and debating how much
access the public should be granted within Alaskan parks and
preserves, just like Denali Park and Preserve.
Use the laptops to research and prepare a 2-3 minute speech from
the perspective of the individual your group is assigned. This speech
will be delivered before a Congressional Committee.

Reflections
• What do you believe is the best way to
balance ANILCA and tourism in Denali
Park?
• What can Park Rangers do to help further
educate visitors on preservation while
visiting parks?
