About SBN
The mission of the Sustainable Business Network of
Greater Philadelphia is to build a just, green, and
thriving economy in the Greater Philadelphia region.
We accomplish this by educating and growing a broad
base of local, independent businesses and educating
policy makers and the public.
We envision a future where businesses are investors in the quality of
life for all citizens. We challenge and support the business community
to build profitable enterprises that serve community needs and share
wealth and protect the environment.
For the Greater Philadelphia region, we will be an effective resource
for dynamic, independent, locally-owned businesses that are committed to improving their environmental and social impacts as well as
their profitability. We will be a national leader in the creation and
integration of entrepreneurial and sustainable business practices. We
will continue to establish new models for business operations that
value people, planet and prosperity for all, leading by example.
We embrace the vision of the Business Alliance for Local Living
Economies, the international coalition of sustainable business networks: “Within a generation, we envision a global system of humanscale, interconnected local economies that functions in harmony with
local ecosystems, meets the basic needs of all people, supports just
and democratic societies, and fosters joyful community life.”

About SBN
Membership Growth 2004–2010
Companies generally fall into one of three categories:
• Startups/new business up to approximately three years old who want to
ensure that their business is sustainable from the outset.
The Sustainable Business Network of Greater
Philadelphia published its first Directory in 2004.
In the past seven years, our membership has
grown exponentially.

continue to find ways to deepen their contribution to community, people and
environment and grow profitably.
• Legacy businesses that have a history of being successful in business but
have little or no socially and environmentally responsible efforts and are
unsure about the optimal path to make those changes.

• SBN members are required to benchmark their social and environmental
practices by completing the B Ratings System within one year of joining
SBN. After a year of evaluating all the options, SBN determined that B Lab’s
B Ratings System is the best tool on the market to measure the social and
environmental impact of small businesses.
•
The listings in this directory that include this logo indicate businesses
that are Certified B Corporations.
• According to B Ratings System results from SBN members, our members
are more likely to engage with suppliers around fair trade and supplier labor
issues, deliver services that solve environmental issues, deliver greener
products, serve non-profits, and have business models that serve the local
economy.
• SBN members are 30 times more likely to donate 10% or more of their
profits to charity than other businesses.

to recognize companies within our membership that demonstrate a
strong social and environmental impact, while also making a profit.
These companies are chosen by a Selection Committee because they
are truly leaders within their fields.

Dansko is a footwear wholesaler located in West
Grove, PA. Founded by husband and wife team Mandy
Cabot and Peter Kjellerup in 1990, Dansko has been
an SBN member since 2009. They are a founding
B Corporation and their company headquarters is
a LEED Gold-certified facility. Dansko’s mission
statement is to be their customer’s favorite shoe
company. In order to meet this goal and be successful, they recognize they have three ledgers to balance
including their people, the planet and the traditional
bottom line. A member since 2008, Cedar Run Landscapes uses
natural materials to create sustainable, exciting
outdoor environments. Owner Alden Zove is a firm
believer that people are an organization’s best asset
and his company has participated in a Welfare-toWork program. They implemented a rain-water
harvest and reuse system on their barn roof, which
will reduce their use of public water by 66%. Alden
says that SBN offers him a diverse network of
business owners “with the same motivation as me—
to build and run a sustainable business while
educating the general public on protecting our quality
of life and environment.” In business for thirty years,
Cedar Runs Landscapes supports a number of local
nonprofit organizations.
Farm to City connects local farmers with urban
markets to provide easier access to fresh, local
produce year-round. Bob Pierson was a founding
member of SBN and appreciates SBN’s commitment
to supporting local businesses and keeping consumers’ dollars in the local, values-driven economy. Since
2001, Farm to City’s programs have resulted in over
$4.2 million in sales by local farms and by small food
businesses, many of which are SBN members. Over
100 farmers, a score of small businesses, and
thousands of households have benefited from these
programs through the sale and purchase of locally
produced food.
Cosmic Catering is a full service catering company
in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia that believes in using
locally made and grown products. Cosmic Catering
has been a member of SBN since 2001 and founder
Peg Botto loves the SBN community. Peg says the
large network of like-minded entrepreneurs is an
essential part of her SBN experience. She is glad to
be surrounded by people as committed to the Triple
Bottom Line as she is.
For 19 years, Green Line Paper has offered green
products for sustainable living, working to preserve
forests and prevent climate change. Since its
founding in 1992, Green Line Paper Company has
been dedicated to selling environmental products
exclusively. President Stephen Baker says, “the
beauty of being with SBN is the sense of accomplishment we experience working with like-minded
businesses all seeking a better world.” Green Line
Paper joined SBN in 2005.

that time, the school, whose charter was recently
renewed through 2012, has expanded in both student

educational experience for a diverse and stable
enrollment of 408 students in grades K-8. Of these
408 students, an overwhelming majority are minori-

concerns, making sure our region—our place—doesn't become
just any place.

Over the past ten years, the Sustainable Business Network of
Greater Philadelphia has become a national leader in the
local business movement and an influential force in the green
economy. We owe this growth largely to our membership,
which is made up of more than 500 companies representing
over 5,000 employees in the Philadelphia region.
