The Amalienborg Museum

Experience one of the world’s largest collections of
Danish design, counting works by designers like Arne
Jacobsen, Poul Kjærholm, Hans Wegner and Verner
Panton. In addition to Danish modern design, the
collections at Designmuseum Danmark cover a wide
span from prehistoric Chinese ceramics, applied art
from the European Renaissance and faience from the
1700s to poster art. The museum building, situated right
next to Amalienborg Castle in Frederiksstaden, is
one of the finest examples of rococo architecture in
Copenhagen and offers: Exhibitions, Garden, Shop,
Café and Library.

Step right into the living rooms and private offices of the
world’s oldest monarchy: Rooms that are preserved and
kept exactly as former Danish Kings and Queens have
chosen to furnish them since 1863 in the days of King
Christian IX. Artifacts, paintings and memorabilia give an
impression of royal everyday life, in the very buildings
where the current Queen Margrethe resides today.
The museum usually has special exhibitions, focusing
on various royal themes.

Kronborg Castle

“Hamlets Castle of Elsinore” is a must-see for everyone
who visits Copenhagen. This World Heritage monument
offers enough experiences for a whole day – but can
still be seen in an hour: the interactive exhibition about
the Renaissance castle, the magnificent ballroom and
the damp casemates. It is just a 40-minutes train ride
from the centre of Copenhagen.

National Gallery of Denmark

SMK is Denmark’s largest art museum and is situated in
the heart of Copenhagen. Here you can explore Danish
and international art from the early Renaissance to new
contemporary art.
In 2013 the special exhibition Flowers and World Views
presents a lush and lavish parade of two centuries of
flower paintings. Also visit The Royal Cast Collection,
situated at Langelinie pier, nearby the little Mermaid.

The Museum of Danish Resistance describes the
Occupation of Denmark in 1940-45 with the main
emphasis on the emergence and development of the
resistance movement. The exhibition illustrates the
resistance work ranging from the printing of illegal
newspapers and secret radio communication with
England to sabotage factories and railways.

Take a journey through the past at The National
Museum, Denmark’s largest museum of cultural history.
The permanent exhibition Danish Prehistory 13,000 BC
– 1050 AD is an absolute ‘must-see’ with highlights
like the Vikings’ gold and silver hoards, and the
3400-year-old and quite unique Sun Chariot.
From 22 June – 17 November 2013 the museum opens
its doors for VIKING - one of the largest exhibitions on
the Vikings yet seen, including a 37 metres long
Viking warship.
