INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the 8th London Kurdish Film Festival. We are
delighted to be with you this year in what is the biggest and
richest selection of films and events to date at our festival. In
this year’s programme we have 121 films, comprising 23 features, 46 documentaries and 52 shorts, including 20 short
films competing in the prestigious 4th Yilmaz Guney Short
Film Competition.
winning DOM; the haunting story of a young girl murdered by
her family in the UK is uncovered in BANAZ: A LOVE STORY;
forced marriages and violence against children is the subject
of PLAYING HOUSE and HOME respectively, we delve into
the highly secretive and conservative world of Ezidi Kurds
in LALISH MIHRANI, and the beauty and astonishing nature
of Kurdistan is portrayed in STONE MELODY, THE EARTH
MELODY and GATE OF GOD. Also this year we have two
essential documentaries from West Kurdistan (Syria), THE
SILENT REVOLUTION, which takes an in-depth look at the
struggle of the Kurds in creating a new and free life in a wartorn area and THE LAST CIGARETTE which follows a family
as they try to escape the war and survive in a refugee camp
in South Kurdistan.
As the London Kurdish Film Festival we pride ourselves on
being the only festival that brings together the largest selection of films from the four parts of Kurdistan and the world.
We believe cinema plays a vital role in unifying the divided
Kurdish nation, protecting and developing their culture and
arts as well as introducing them to the wider world. The continuing rise in Kurdish film production has meant that this
year there are more films covering critical topics and telling
ever more compelling stories, which are to a higher quality,
than ever before. This is reflected in the awards and recognition Kurdish cinema is now receiving worldwide.
Our belief in the importance of short films for the development of Kurdish cinema means that a novelty in this year’s
festival is the screening of short films before features. The notable increase in the production and quality of short films has
led to Rezan Yesilbas’s SILENT, which won the best short
film award at Cannes in 2012 and HOUSES WITH SMALL
WINDOWS by Bulent Ozturk, which won the 2013 European
Short Film Award at Venice. Apart from these two films all
the short films selected for the 4th Yilmaz Guney Short Film
Competition, will be screened before a feature film. The Out
of Competition short films, differing with previous festivals,
will be screened not according to which part of Kurdistan
they derive from, but instead in four separate programmes.
As our opening gala film this year we are honoured to have
the UK premiere of BEFORE SNOWFALL, a thought provoking film about honour killing by multi-award winning director
Hisham Zaman; who will be in attendance at the festival.
In our star studded and award winning feature line-up we
have master filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi’s UK premiere
of RHINO SEASON, starring Monica Bellucci and Behrouz
Vossoughi; the UK premiere of ever-present Hiner Saleem’s
Cannes selected MY SWEET PEPPERLAND, the first ‘Kurdish Western’; the internationally acclaimed BEKAS (UP &
AWAY) by Karzan Kader, a film about two Kurdish brothers trying to travel to America to meet Superman; Antalya
Golden Orange Best Film Winner YOUR BEAUTY IS WORTH
NOTHING by Huseyin Tabak; renowned director Reha Erdem’s JIN, which tells the story of a young Kurdish woman
trying to survive in a patriarchal world and award winning
REC (TRACE) by Tayfur Aydin, the story of a son who struggles against authorities to bury his mother in her homeland.
We are thrilled to be able to have Hiner Saleem, Bahman
Ghobadi, and Tayfur Aydin with us for the screenings of their
films.
Finally, we would like to thank everyone who has contributed to our festival this year. In particular all the volunteers
who have made the festival possible; the filmmakers who
submitted their films; the pre-selection committee members
who selected films, jury members who agreed to take part in
selecting award winners and all our representatives in Kurdistan for their valuable contributions and critical support. We

As with the record number of feature films, we are also showcasing a record number of documentaries at this year’s festival, which cover a wide range of issues concerning Kurds
and Kurdistan including Veli Kahraman’s award winning and
poetic WHERE IS MY MOTHER TONGUE?, a film about the
importance of the Kurdish language in defining its culture
and world; ROBOSKI MON AMOUR by Bulent Gunduz, a
personal and touching journey to the village where 34 Kurds
were massacred by the Turkish state in 2011 and HUNGER DUTY and STATE IS THE PERPETRATOR which look
at the KCK arrests and recent struggle in North Kurdistan.
The genocide committed against Kurds in South Kurdistan
is relived in the sorrowful documentaries EM and BALISAN;
the lives of an invisible people are documented in the award

ABOUT 111 GIRLS
BEFORE SNOWFALL
In a remote village in Eastern Kurdistan 111 girls feel hopeless about their situation. The combined impact of war and
lack of investment in their region by the government has left
them without potential husbands. They write a collective plea
to the President in which they put an ultimatum: in four days
time they will commit suicide. A government official, carrying
a message from the government, sets out on an epic journey
in a race against time to save 111 Kurdish girls.
Before Snowfall is a thought-provoking look at honor killing and the
intricate web of connections that sustain the brutal tradition. Siyar
comes face to face with his own sense of loyalty, dignity, honor
and love when he follows his elder sister Nermin who flees an arranged marriage. On his mission to restore the family honor, his
fate links him to Evin, a young girl living on the streets of Istanbul.
As Siyar ventures farther away from home and his relationship with
Evin deepens, he faces a moral crisis. Hisham Zaman’s epic feature
takes the audience on a journey through Kurdistan and to Europe.

BROKEN MUSSELS
BURNING NESTS
This debut film follows the intertwined stories of teenage
cousins Hakim and Feysal from Mardin who dream of a new
life in Germany and of Medina and her ailing daughter Elma
who are Bosnian refugees in Istanbul. Attempts to break into
the lucrative mussel selling market in Istanbul go comically
wrong but then Medina disappears and a desperate search
begins.
Burning Nests is based on the true story of Ali, the lost and
re-found son of Halabja. After the chemical attacks on the
town of Halabja in South Kurdistan (Iraq), a little boy of only a
couple of months old gets separated from his surviving family while being transported to Iran for medical treatment. For
twenty-seven years he grows up with an Iranian family under
the assumption that he is Iranian, until his adoptive mother
dies and the search for his real family in Halabja begins.

FAIRY SPRING
Five contemporary stories involving different characters are
interwoven into a reflection on the way relational dysfunction
prompts people to enact physical and emotional violence
against themselves, each other or society. This common
theme is represented by a physical object or act that is not
necessarily relevant to the plot, but which serves as a visual
metaphor for the challenges facing different characters in different situations, who are confronted by the same problems.
An old farmer finds a girl wandering around alone and decides to take her home. She tells him that she is a fairy. Childless women from surrounding towns and villages come to
get healed by the fairy. But her blossoming romance with
the village teacher threatens her status as a magical being
and puts the strains on her relationship with her savior, the
old Farmer.

IN TIMES OF CHANGE

This film captures the lives of the members of the Boran family in Freiburg, Germany, which is marked by a deep sense
of un-fulfillment and failure. Silently and worn down by a depressing atmosphere in the house, they live alongside one
another without interacting. Until one day a big change sets
the family into motion and the unimaginable happens. A dogma-style Kurdish feature film by the director Chepo Gevez.
17 year old Jin, a young Kurdish woman, is on the run
through dangerous terrains in a mountainous region. Risking her life through multiple acts of rebellion in order to win
her freedom, she is nevertheless flanked by men and nature,
which conspire to make her journey a treacherous one. The
interaction between beauty and savagery throughout the

SCULPTURES TEARS
Farhad travels back from France to his old village to visit his
mother’s grave. When he attends the wedding of a friend,
Shirin catches his eyes, especially when she corrects his
broken French. The ensuing relation sways between their
desire to be with each other and the prejudices of society,
ably portrayed by a stern mother who has other plans for her
daughter. Shirin manages to persuade her parents to allow
her to visit France. But once there, she finds it difficult to
make real progress with Farhad, so her surrender to the will
of the society and her mother becomes inevitable.
This is an atmospheric film that portrays the agony of a tormented artist, Lalo, languishing between his creativity and
the demons from the past. Lalo lives like a hermit on one of
the mountains of Kurdistan. As he chisels through his sculptures, he instils his creations with his anguish and torment

to help bring in the harvest. Meanwhile, the village teacher
fights the locals to send their children to school. The children,
torn between their desire to attend school and their obedience to their fathers, led by Serhat, try to pursue a dream
of their own.
The setting of this film is a deserted village that is gradually submerged in water due to the building of a dam. The
former mayor and his wife Baji refuse to leave and continue
to care for each other as usual. Baji spends her time embroidering. One day a trio of mountain-climbers takes refuge
in their house and a blizzard separates the mayor from his
wife, who is left alone in the village and has to face her fears
and dreams.

Base, who lives alone in Elbistan, tries in vain to persuade
her eldest son, Hasan, to come back and build a life for himself with her in Elbistan. Her youngest son, who lives in Amed
(Diyarbakir), comes across a tape that is addressed to his
parents while moving homes as he is going to become a father soon. His intrigue takes him to Elbistan to look for other
tapes and to persuade his mother to come and live with him.
But she refuses to leave her home. As he stays to buy time
to persuade her, he continues his quest to find the tapes.
Instead, he finds more hidden secrets about his family.
In a small village in South Kurdistan (Iraq), near the border
with North Kurdistan (Turkey), Bahar finds herself pregnant
with a yet another girl. Yearning for a son, her husband
Bewar decides to take a second wife from a family on the
other side of the border. Bewar persuades his wife to come
with him on the dangerous journey, crossing the border, to
convince his prospective father-in-law. But Bewar is not prepared for Behar’s challenge as she crosses her own personal
boundaries and starts to stand up for herself.

A KNOCK ON THE DOOR
The renewed oppression campaign of 2009 by the Turkish state against Kurds was eerily symbolised with the early
morning “knocks on the door”, followed by the muffled
sounds of beating and arrest. The directors of this informative documentary about the Kurdistan Communities Union
(KCK) arrests started rolling their cameras when only 51
people had been arrested. As they continued their interviews
the count rose to reach more than 6000. The result is a gripping tail of oppression, resilience, hope and despair.
The twelve-year-old Veysel and his family are struggling to
integrate into Austrian society and way of life. Tension in the
family is growing along with the threat of deportation. Despite all this Veysel is trying to memorize a German Poem. As
he gathers the courage to recite the poem to his secret love
Ana, the immigration police threaten his plans.

valleys and mountains takes a fresh look at the ways traditions are
preserved and cherished in that region.

Dom is the original name for Gypsies. This particular group portrayed
in this engrossing documentary are based near Nusaybin in Northern
Kurdistan. Hundreds of families are scattered across a vast area and
denied any official existence. Their inability to speak Turkish further
limits their ability to fend for themselves. But they have maintained
their own distinct cultural identity, mainly through preserving a sizable repertoire of traditional songs played on single cord instruments.

Turkish prisons, went on hunger strike demanding the recognition of

Hoshyar was a dapper young man until the day he stepped on

legs, Hoshyar does not lose his spirit. This inspiring film follows him
as he goes around Halabja, his hometown, cleaning landmines and
visiting other victims. It is particularly moving to watch since Hoshyar
passed away at the end of last August.

ROBOSKI MON AMOUR
On 28th December 2011 thirty-four Kurds were killed in a drone
attack by Turkish war planes. They were villagers trying to earn their
living by smuggling from and to South Kurdistan (Iraq). The military
claimed that they mistook them for PKK fighters, even though 19
of them were children. A reference to Alain Resnais’s classic “Hiroshima Mon Amour” this moving documentary takes a personal
journey to the village of Roboski where director Gündüz meets and
talks with the surviving families of the victims.

alone, but when it takes the form of burning with metal spoons on their
hands and stomach, it is deplorable. Yet, the director of this short documentary has managed to follow the shocking stories of many children, 3 of

STATE IS THE PERPETRATOR
The oppression of the Turkish military-backed government reached
its climax with the crackdown on the Newroz celebration in 1992
that left scores of casualties amongst the citizen of Cizre. Extrajudiciary groups known as JITEM played a notorious role in the
kidnapping, arrests, disappearance, rape, torture and maiming of
hundreds of Kurds. This film, which follows the trial of some of the
figureheads who masterminded JITEM, delves into the extraordinary world of State terror, interviewing the victims as well as personnel who confess to their role in the JITEM activities.

prominent roles in organising life. A teacher has to teach in a makeshift school, and a music group prepares to perform at the Newroz

Hiner Saleem
Born on 9 March 1964, Hiner Saleem is a Kurdish film director from Iraq. He was born in the
town of Aqrah (Akre) in Iraqi Kurdistan. In 1992, after the First Gulf War, he filmed undercover
the living conditions of Iraqi Kurds. This footage was shown at the Venice Film Festival. In
1998, he made his first movie, VIVE LA MARIÉE... ET LA LIBÉRATION DU KURDISTAN. His
second, PASSEURS DE RÊVES, came out in 2000, and his third film, VODKA LEMON, released in 2003, won the San Marco Prize at the Venice Film Festival. These were followed by
KILOMETRE ZERO (2005), DOL (2006), BENEATH THE ROOFTOP OF PARIS (2007), AFTER
THE FALL (2009), IF YOU DIE, I’LL KILL YOU (2011) AND MY SWEET PEPER LAND (2013).
He wrote and directed all of his films. He was honoured with the prestigious title Chevalier des
Arts et Lettres by French Minister of Culture Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres in 2005. His memoirs titled My Father’s Rifle has been published in French, English and 22 other languages.
A Filmmaker and accomplished theatre director, actress and singer, Julia’s performance
background started at the age of seven when she joined the Stella Greenfield Academy of
Drama, subsequently winning numerous drama awards. After studying at University College
London; obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature, she subsequently starred in the first
British touring production of THE MEDEA; directed by Peter Meineck, touring extensively on
the east coast of America. There, she went on to work with the acclaimed theatre producer
Esquire Jauchem, whilst studying film and theatre at UCLA California and the Theatre of Arts
in Hollywood. She is also a graduate of both film and documentary film making. In 2007, her
work caught the attention of both Working Title and BBC Head of Comedy Commissioning
Mark Freeland, who has called it “exceptional, fresh, original and inspiring”.
Julia Sako
Mehmet Aktaş
Kurdish documentary filmmaker, author and producer Mehmet Aktaş is the founder and director of mîtosfilm film production and rental (Berlin & Iraq). He is the first producer to focus
on professional Kurdish filmmaking, thereby actively pioneering the current Kurdish cinema
movement. Aktaş was born in Iğdır (North Kurdistan) in 1967 and grew up in Istanbul. After
studying law and media sciences, he worked as a correspondent in the Middle East and Asia
for various newspaper and TV channels but was forced to leave Turkey for political reasons
which led to his move to Germany.
Aktaş’s filmography includes the movies; BEFORE SNOWFALL (Hisham Zaman, 2013), NO

Nicola Gallani
She is a filmmaker, distribution consultant and artistic director of the British Film Festival of
Kurdistan in Erbil which forges ties with the burgeoning local film industry (www.bffk.net). With
a career in film exhibition and distribution spanning two decades, including stints at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, the British Film Institute and the London Film Festival, Nicola has
helped launch many new and distinctive filmmaking voices to UK audiences. She advised
BAFTA on the theatrical release of the 2013 nominated shorts and works occasionally with
the British Council on film projects.
In 2012 she produced Robert Pacitti’s debut feature ON LANDGUARD POINT - part of the
Arts Council’s East of England flagship project for the Cultural Olympiad.Nicola is currently filming a documentary on London’s Little Italy, one of 25 projects selected for Sheffield
DocFest’s Crossover Market.
Shawkat is a Kurdish film director originally from Zakho in South Kurdistan in Iraq. In 1975
his family fled to Iran as a result of Saddam’s regime and he finally returned in 1999. He has
worked in Theatre, TV and Cinema productions over the years both in Iran and Iraq. In 2002
he organised the First Kurdish Short Film Festival. His own first feature film CROSSING THE
DUST opened the 5th London Kurdish Film Festival in 2007 and went on to show in many
international festivals and receive many awards. He has completed his second feature film
KICK OFF in 2009.

Guardian) was shortlisted for the Virgin
Media Shorts in 2011 and screened in
Picturehouse Cinemas around the UK
for one year. In 2012, Laura became a
Finalist in The Pitch competition with
her Sci-Fi idea Magi, which took her
into the boardroom at Pinewood Studios. She is currently completing a documentary that follows Phoenix Future’s
pioneering approach to the therapeutic
community model.

industry for the last 15 years, He has

at Marmara University Department of Cinema and TV. He has made five short films
and has written numerous film analyses

An independent scholar living in Oxford,
Tim Kennedy received his MA in Film Studies from the University of Reading in 2002,
and was awarded his PhD in 2007 with a
dissertation comparing the representation
of Armenian, Kurdish, and Palestinian national identity in cinema. His publications
include articles on Palestinian cinema in
Film Quarterly (2006), on Soviet Armenian
cinema in the Journal of Armenian Studies
(2006), and a chapter on the films of Yılmaz
Güney in Kürt Sineması (Kurdish Cinema)
(2009). Tim presented a paper on Kurdish
National Cinema at the 2009 Film Conference in Diyarbakir, and at the 2010 American Comparative Literature Association
Conference in St. Louisv v. He was also a
member of the competition jury of the London Kurdish Film Festival in 2009.

BEDENG (SILENT)
The prison of Diyarbakir, the setting of the story, is a symbol of
the torture experienced in the prisons in Turkey after the coup
d’etat of 1980. However, this story is not about the things that
took place in the prison, or the political prisoners or the torture,
or the political fight. Instead, it is about the little stories of the
“silent” women outside the prison, who could not speak another
language other than Kurdish, which was forbidden in the prisons
of that era.

a competition to select the best entry for a screenplay for a feature film on a Kurdish theme.
The competition forms part of the 8th London Kurdish Film Festival which is taking place
between 15th and 24th November 2013. The wining entry will receive a prize of five thousand
US Dollars ($5000), sponsored by University of Kurdistan - Hewlér.
Results will be announced at The Short Film Awards Ceremony on 22nd November at 21.00.
